I worried about stealth. One of the important parts of EU was restraint. You couldn't just barrel through the level, dashing up to half cover, because you could activate units and be shit out of luck. With stealth though, it looks like not only is their detection radius pretty damn small, but you can also see it from a really long distance away. Seems like there's no risk involved in running around the map in stealth, which would kind of kill all the tension that EU had.
There is still quite a lot of risk, given the fact that in the Demo the Fog of War was disabled.

The dev said after the gameplay demo it's possible to stealth through an entire mission but it's very hard to accomplish and risky because if you're spotted halfway through, you'll wake all the enemies you've already passed as well so you'll end up surrounded. He emphasized that the 'stealth' mechanic is mainly just there to set up ambushes.

woah i didn't even process that, the whole demo felt slightly off and that was totally why

Yep I was thinking about that too.
Plus there's gonna be more destruction apparently, but now I can only hope for more detailed maps like in EU/EW..
Also, what's the deal with EW anyway? Did Meld substance or EXALT forces ever exist, now that XCOM2 post-Enemy Unknown specifically, where the aliens won?
[editline]16th June 2015[/editline]
welp, I may have asked that wrong.. but like, canon-lore-wise..

MELD is pretty much what made Floaters I think so yeah. Exalt on the other hand is unknown.

Is it bad that something in me feels very giddily happy about the concept of harvesting corpses of our enemies so we can consume them and improve ourselves?

That's XCOM, baby
So in my current game there's a growing power gap - most of my crew is Captain through Colonel, and whenever I try to bring a Squaddie or Corporal along they end up dying horribly.
I know this is untenable long-term but as long as my pro team is alive I can't complain too much.
It looked like the advent troopers were bleeding meld, or something similar. Probably a big part of the hybridizing going on.
Yeah, but the guy talking about the game actually said something along the lines that they were human, and should have bled red blood, but may have been a bug/glitch or something.
Plus, EXALT troops who had red blood also had yellow/orange/Meld-ish shit going on around them in their bodies.
[editline]16th June 2015[/editline]
Man I just hope it's gon be good.. Cuz' EW/LW alone is really fucking good.
[editline]16th June 2015[/editline]
I mean the Advent troops. When we see them next time, we might see red blood.. But don't carve my words into stone here. Based on what I listened/could tell about the IGN interview with XCOM2 dev.

he said "maybe that's a bug" because he wasn't allowed to talk about it, because it's very likely a story related thing he can't reveal.

he was like "what are you talking about, that must be a bug" to try and get off the subject

Could be.. Pretty weird though, close to lying. Also I felt that the interviewer was prying on some rather "delicate" info throughout, being kinda intrusive. :v:
Most notably, "Those reinforcements are NOT actually gonna get a free shot, right? I mean, pft, I now use my position to possibly even alter the final outcome of the game."
[editline]16th June 2015[/editline]
Anyways, I think red blood would have fitted the Advent troopers better. Because I'm thinking they're definitely human recruits of the new Alien occupants. Cool, and human-like, death animations as well.

We already talked about it. They won't actually get a free shot, it's done for demo purposes.
Suddenly, after a few missions of regular mutons, berzerkers and some assorted weaklings, the aliens pull mechtoids and elite floaters out of their arses; had a UFO mission with three of the fucking mechtoids stuffed into a medium raider-class.
Anyone else ever have to deal with the issue of cover icons not showing up when you hover over them in EW? It's not a huge deal, as I know what kind of cover most objects give, but it's somewhat obnoxious. Works fine in EU for some reason.

Honestly, I'm inclined to suspect it is a bug - at least, for it to show up on low level ADVENT...

Are you playing Long War? Because IIRC there is some sort of an "economy system" in it where the aliens go for a few eco rounds and then go all in on some missions. The amount of MELD you receive in the containers shows how well the aliens are doing.

the way he said it really felt like he was avoiding the topic, like he wasn't expecting the question.

I did mention 'low-level' advent. I rather suspect we might be seeing some hardcore advent elites late-game...

Well it was probably just playful and he was just trying to keep tight lipped about it. I kinda wish it was a bug though, I like the idea of the lowest level ADVENT goons just being normal humans who bought into all the alien propaganda and stuff. Kinda like the Metro Police in HL2, having that "average person turned evil henchman" makes them a bit more interesting.

You're not using two graphics cards are you?
I had that same issue whenever I booted XCOM with crossfire enabled.

There's not a half-bad chance that someone is hurriedly changing a few effects files before thursday - and them having minor bioaugmentation wouldn't detract from the "average person turned evil henchman" bit.

Having the basic grunts just be completely normal humans would be more effective though imo.

What version of Long War you playing? Just wondering
Also jesus christ those drones, on Brutal, they keep critting, and hitting, through cover. One was at 1hp, and still hit.
I wonder if it's possible to re-enter a 'stealth' like state, i mean kill the enemies who you are currently engaged with and retreat before the reinforcements turn up. At that point they would know you are in the area but would not know exactly where you are which would allow you to strike them when you choose rather than they pop out of the fog and snipe your guys on a roof behind hard cover despite realisitically having no idea where you'd gone. Likewise i wonder if you can keep members of your team in stealth when the shit does hit the fan. Would be cool to set up distractions with some of the squad while the others position themselves to take out reinforcements or even do the mission without being seen.
Also wonder if there are stealth weapons too, supressed shots use subsonic rounds that do less damage and only last a few shots before the supressor gets worn out and no longer muffles shots and you'd still have the risk of missing or not killing the enemy thus alerting everyone, and of course once things do go loud you'd still be using subsonic rounds so you'd still have the damage penalty.

I mean you could be in a "stealth-like" state similarly in XCOM Enemy Unknown. It's not like they could track you without line of sight. The trouble is that maps are linear enough that they're inevitably just going to walk in the direction they last saw you go and there's nowhere to hide. Looks like newly spawning units are just going to land in line of sight like XCOM Enemy Unknown as well.
Pretty sure the stealth state is over for good when you're spotted since the enemies are on alert and know you're in the area.
