why would you do that to yourself
Gotta prove the XCOM canon wrong. I don't need no stinkin' laser/plasma guns to win.

have fun storming the [DEL]castle[/DEL] temple ship
In The Zone snipers are fucking insane.
Get a MECdude with a grenade launcher and break the cover for a couple aliens and you can have one guy wipe out literally every hostile in the map if he's got a good enough sniper rifle. I'm playing on Classic too and I've pretty much had no casualties after this guy got his skill.
Edit: Huh I am gold member???
Alright so, I'm going for a no-tech run of XCOM:EW. Obviously you gotta research specific things which are objective related: Make Arc Thrower - Capture Xeno - Capture Outsider - Research shard - Research Relay - Firestorm. Those are the only techs I'm researching since you need them to progress the story, so I'm only using things you can afford to do from the beginning without researching anything: Such as grenades, medkits, officer training school, and absolutely no better guns or armor.
And I just finished the XCOM Base Defense and fuckin' hell. I lost 1 of my normal guys and 6 blue shirts. Shooting Mectoids with ballistic weapons is a nightmare. Thankfully the overall contingent of enemies is lighter the sooner you get the mission. I haven't even met EXALT yet.
Also I'm doing this on Classic Ironman.
Didn't someone attempt this before? I remember someone posted a particular screenshot where they were at the stage in the game where they were trying to kill Sectopods with ballistic weapons in an urban map or something to that effect

I remember doing the same thing in UFO Defense. I got surprisingly far in and could regularly win battles, but could never catch a commander for some reason and quit.

I remember that too, but I also remember that post had SHIVs I think. In any case I'm going bare-bones on this. I still find it hilarious that I had my Base Defense before I even met exalt.

You know, I really hope you can level up troopers by means other than killing lmaos in XCOM2-- it's kind of a pain to level supportive classes when you basically have to ration enemy health for them to get any XP.

Because Long War logic
It's mainly because they decided that recovery times would be based on hitpoints lost rather than proportions, an assault who loses 5 HP (after armour) and still had 5 HP after takes about the same recovery time as a sniper who loses 5 HP (after armour) and is on their last 1 HP
a class with high max health can be out for ungodly amounts of time because it isn't linear, each HP lost makes it go up even further.

It'd be nice if you got XP for healing your guys, but did you really have leveling problems with your support? My support was available for every single mission since I started the game because of the classes' tendency to not get hurt. No recovery time means they're always present, so they get paced pretty evenly with offensive classes that get hurt often.

I'd be down to use females more often in XCOM 2 if they actually looked like this. Whenever I try to customize females they always end up looking wrong, mostly because the 'exposed neck thing whenever they wear a helmet' is tons more visible on them than on males.

if it wasnt in the game, i would totally just play longwar only.
I'm glad XCOM 2 will be out before I've got the patience and experience to play Long War.

All soldiers get XP if you successfully complete the mission.

I agree that it would be nice for other actions to grant XP, especially considering 60xp per mission is paltry late game.

ghost armor is beautiful

and why are they even congregating like that?
Thin mints are always busy caressing the ground when I interrupt them and these guys seem to be having a jolly old chat

When they are spawned, they are placed in a tight cluster. When you expose them they scatter. When you've not been seen, you don't trigger the free move.
So yes, ghost armor is beautiful.
Hahahhahahah, you really DON'T need better armor, weapons OR equipment to beat the aliens. I just assaulted the Overseer ship and I CANNED everyone on it:

I was able to take this thing out in just 2 turns, that's usually how long it takes me to just kill these things with Plasma, I'm not even kidding.
And of course as for the ethereal and it's 2 body guards, well, let's just say they ate some nice Shredder and about 2 normal rocket follow-ups:

I'm starting to regret making that bet...

Check optional files in the nexus mod page, there is a file to activate the developer console.

Oh, interesting.
And no, I never had problems actually leveling supports, but I found it odd that killing was the only thing that seemed to count towards leveling.

Sadly they're usually on fire or a pile of rubble so I can't say I have.
I'm in the lategame portion of the game with the best possible equipment for my dudes and I get a Thin Man council mission
Cue my sniper getting critted twice for 24 total damage, reviving with full HP thanks to medicine man and getting critted for 29 total again leaving him at 1 HP by the end of the mission thanks to medicman's medicine spam.
Thinking about cosplaying as an EXALT Operative for a con I'm going to.
If I decide to do it, I hope there are enough XCOM players there so that it won't go over everyone's heads.
Any suggestions on how I should act in order to stay in character?
If anyone tries to take a picture of you, jam a syringe of poison into your neck.
