When you get invisibility armours and other stealth tech it should probably be a lot easier.
I for one hope stealth isn't a forced element. I appreciate sneaking up on the guys but holy shit will I be pissed if it's something like Payday 2, where some missions force you to sneak around, it's so dull when you've been playing the game all shooty-tooty.

Stealth will be encouraged as an opening move, but once shit hits the fan it'll be XCOM as you expect it.

Holy shit RAG Frag is the most useless sniper I've ever recruited. 91 aim PLUS height bonuses and he STILL missed every single shot from the roof of the bar on that one small UFO raid map, and the one time he HAS hit in the entire early campaign, he did exactly one damage to a Sectoid (playing with Damage Roulette on), leaving Turnips5 to pick up the slack every time.
I can't wait for a FP XCOM member's performance in the game to start affecting how other posters receive them on the forums

Nah but really, from what I know, half cover gives you some defense, full cover gives you double that, and being higher than an enemy increases your aim on said enemy. Hunkering down on half cover gives you the full cover benefits, and hunkering down on full cover adds on some defense as well I think.
It's also worth pointing out that when you're in good cover the enemy is less inclined to shoot that squad member so they might move, shoot someone else or overwatch instead.

How do I progress toward getting my first Mecs in long war? Is it different than vanilla EW?

Even more importantly, units out of cover are 50% more likely to be crit-hit, which can be absolutely devastating if you're up against thinmints or mutons. I did a little savescumming experiment where I wanted to see how likely a unit was to survive out of cover vs. a thin guy with high ground, poor bastard got critted over 20 times before I called it quits.

Hunkering down doubles it (So it becomes 40 and 80)

Relay defence is a sane amount. Cleared it with only five kills, could only be done by drawing attention to the LZ while my agent tagged the nodes and went back into hiding. It'll only get harder from here so I'm cultivating a dedicated agent soldier. Orkel is my prime candidate because his mobility is :godzing: and grenadier skills let him carry 2 scans + 2 HE (for making shortcuts).
