This is what I hate the most about the game. By the time I finished, I was hoping to be treated like a leader, but nope, I'm still just a little fuckboy polishing Elder Maxson's power armor.
Good to know :v: This reinforces my decision to change factions now.
Perhaps in the 23rd Century, the rank of General is believed to be that of the top Soldier. The one who could most efficiently lead a team of boots on the ground.
I know I'm just trying to explain bullshit but it's possible, when you consider some of the other dumbass misconceptions of the old world.
So does the one who kills the General then become Big General?
Good to know :v: This reinforces my decision to change factions now.
iirc, you don't become a real leader of any of the factions.
Just out of curiosity how many of you persevered with the brotherhood of steel storyline?[sp] I'm at the stage where I've built the teleporter[/sp]... warning spoilers ahead, definately maybe near end game spoilers.
[sp] To be completely honest at first when I met the brotherhood of steel I thought they were pretty damn awesome but the more quests I've done for them the more bullshit I found them, which is making me think ah fuck it, join the institute and wipe them all out. I've never been interested in the railroad or minutemen (The settlement building was a nice idea but it wasn't for me.) My main reason for heading into the institute was to save Virgil and get him the serum. I know it sounds stupid but he seemed to have a pretty fleshed out storyline which I found interesting, and that was my reasoning to save him. Then I read up that the BoS wants to kill Virgil. It just seems like the BoS are complete asshats. I mean I fucking laughed my ass off when Elder Maxson gave me vertibird flares but said they weren't able to help in a fight and they are a vital asset. Only to see later on these vertibirds fucking crash and explode over towns.
Slightly off topic, I was wondering if anyone else had this thought. In Virgil's old lab at the institute there were two holotapes, one which described his reasoning to destroy the FEV program and another, which sadly I forget what it said, they were looking for other subjects. I genuinely thought for a moment that was why the baby was taken so that they could find a cure for the FEV or even worse use his DNA to further the program. [/sp]
Wall of text ahead.
I persevered with the Brotherhood, though in Blind Betrayal [sp]i managed to talk Maxson down from executing Danse.[/sp]
Interestingly enough, it wasn't until i committed to the Brotherhood that i felt 'free' from the obligation to roleplay the part of the vengeful mother and housewife. After some initial discomfort from [ending spoilers] [sp]slaughtering the Railroad,[/sp] i realized that rolling with the Brotherhood was how i really wanted to play the game the whole time. I had to force myself to do it, and while going through their quests i came to notice that my hesitation wasn't because i disagreed with them, it was because i was still trying to keep up the facade of a character the game told me i had to play.
The main quest kept reinforcing that my character was desperate to find her son and that she was, overall, a compassionate but struggling survivor with a strong moral compass. I was only furthering that character because the game showed me that trying to stray from that role would cause significant cognitive dissonance. If i told a settler that i killed raiders every chance i got, i felt conflicted because that's what the character i -wanted- to play would have said, but it's not what Nora, law-degree-carrying mother and wife would have said, and that's who the game's writing was forcing me to try to maintain the appearance of.
I ended up advancing with the Brotherhood because i like powerful technology, huge metal mechsuits, and gunning down mutants with two-handed weaponry. That's really all i wanted to do. But until i reached the point where i was forced to devote to them, i still felt forced to make decisions that were consistent with the personality of Nora.
This is what irks me the most about Fallout 4. The main story was written under the assumption that every player would feel the same way about the events in the intro. The writing team went ahead and figured each player would want their character to: 1) have been in a traditional marriage, 2) have had a child, 3) be a lawyer/veteran, 4) prioritize finding their child and their child's kidnapper.
Those four things, they fill in a LOT of otherwise blank space in the metaphorical character sheet. Yes, you can do mental gymnastics and tell yourself you didn't want the baby, or your marriage was out of convenience, etc. etc. But then good luck keeping your role intact when your dialogue options demonstrate that Nora loved Nate, Nora loved Shaun, and Nora wants Shaun back no matter what.
If you don't want to commit your character to that role, you have to avoid a good half of the game's story content. That's not conducive to good roleplay.
I still love this game. But i will probably have to put in a lot of unnecessary effort on my next run-through to avoid falling into that cookie-cutter.
iirc, you don't become a real leader of any of the factions.
Well you are made The Director of the Institute but it's right at the end of the game so... Can't really do anything with that power.
[editline]edit[/editline]
End game despite it being shite with almost zero actual content, you can do far more than what you could in other factions as The Director.
Given you can replace one of the heads of the SRB and you get a quest that involves some scientists that don't believe you should be the Director and you get to choose what happens to them, it's waay more control than any of the other factions gives you in regards to actually feeling like you are in charge or high ranking.
It's still completely shit though, same as any other faction.

Well they did get the whole minutemen thing pretty much right, so they're not that stupid...

That's exactly what I felt during my first abandoned playthrough. Fuck Nora, fuck Nate, fuck Shaun, long live the Claw.

Spoiler tag that yo.
p garves looks like such a badass but he's really (one of?) the worst characters in the game
so much potential with the whole minutemen idea but it felt rushed af in the end and persten gerby had literally no inflection

Sorry I sort of rushed it, fixed though.

His voice acting is very bad - and I can hear the discomfort in his voice when he had to read the romance lines.
So b/c of the update how should I ago about my mods?
Your mods will work fine but you need to use either of these two to actually get them to stay on, depends on your preference really.

Well it's isolated to those three files, and I've never touched them so I think I'm good.
(Institute spoilers) [sp]I was really hoping you'd get to say "I HAVE NO SON!" to Shaun at some point. It's a cliche, but it woulda been great.[/sp]

Institute spoilers - [sp]From what I remember I think you can at some point, I'm sure I did during one of my various playthroughs
You can't do it while he's on his deathbed though, pity would have been hilarious[/sp]
Do you think they'll make settlement building more of an important/less clunky gameplay element?
I wanted to be able to raze the rubble of an area and recreate it in my own image, rather than attempt to slide in some dull prefabs amongst ruined junk.

[sp]Whenever I went by him on his deathbed I didn't notice him, 'cuz I'd been busy shwacking everything that had a red blip. He started to say something and it startled me, causing me to whip around and immediately blast him square in the face with a load of buckshot. Never actually got to hear his lines.[/sp]

That doesn't guarantee that your account is safe. The accounts of the people that made those mods were accessed by someone else, who then uploaded the files with the DLLs in it. It's not clear how they were accessed yet, but if it was through the Nexus user database, then it's entirely possible that your account could be still be accessed by someone else.

I really don't think they'll touch any of the mechanics. Bethesda never does that sort of thing, maybe if settlements are the point of one of the DLCs...

Well, I've done a lot - A LOT - of work on the castle at this point. So much scavenging, so many perks, so much work into making it all look nice, but at long last, here it is
[t]http://i.imgur.com/D62XaSl.jpg[/t]
As you can see, the walls are fixed up, and instead of making a door on the western side, it's just a dead end. A dead end for anyone who tries to approach from that direction, that is.
Also, as per conventional wisdom, if you're making a fortress to protect from an enemy with ballistic weapons, never make the buildings taller than the walls protecting them.

I drew a lot of inspiration from the citadel, and the whole thing is cut into quarters, the most notable of which being the financial quarter (above) and the junk quarter (below). The financial quarter contains a bar and inn (right) and the future site of a small embassy and shopping center (several booths in one building, left)
[t]http://i.imgur.com/QkQmFSG.jpg[/t]
The junk quarter is where I call that small private shack on the left home, and where the training and recreation take place. Power armor is stationed there in case of emergencies.

Between the two is the plaza. This is where unassigned residents like to hang out, and it stays well-lit well into the night thanks to lighting run to the tables themselves. The radio station was given a bit more workable of a lighting situation, and is in the process of having a small shed built around it to protect the one on comms duty from the elements.
How'd I do? Still a work in progress, and the inner walls are largely untouched.

I'd buy it.
Found this Cat in a Pâtisserie.

Can't do anything but leave it. :(
That citadel settlement is cozy as hell.
I think you should put battlements around the whole perimeter of the wall though.
