I don't know if this makes me less or even more disappointed in that place.
Less for me. It shows that Bethesda did have plans and just resorted to another raider dungeon to save time. I'm willing to bet a lot of the scripts are still in there.
The best part is that since the voice clips are still in the files, a mod can easily be made that restores the arena as intended when the GECK comes out. I mean, it would happen anyways but at least now it will have the official voice actors.

However, I went through the East City Downs files and nope, it was always a raider dungeon from the beginning.
Now that's disappointing.
[sp]You have tried interacting/talking with the kid have you? That's required for the quest to continue[/sp]
[sp]How the hell does that work? There's a wall in the way, and yet I can still talk to the kid[/sp]
I mean, thank you, but...
HOLY SHIT
Okay, I have undeniable proof that the Combat Zone was going to be a functioning arena.
I extracted Tommy's voice clips and lo-and-behold the motherfucker talks about prize money and moving through the ranks, putting on a show, and a lift into the cage accessible through the basement.
Here they are on dropbox if you want a listen:

I tried to get rid of the voice clips already in the game so it is mostly the cut stuff.
I'm going to go digging through the East City Downs files next, and then got through a couple other interesting folders.

I am expecting a series of "Fallout 4: Uncut" mods to be the first GECK mods that will be made.
The cut BOS ending is just to good to be cut.
I.. huh. Surely Bethesda didn't rush their own release since pre-production work for FO4 started in 2010. I don't get why the cut content since those sound pretty good. Did Beth just decide it wasn't good in their eyes or something?

it just works.
Explained in the Fallout 3 CE artbook that it was a conscious design decision since they wanted to make a barren wasteland rather than a lush one.
They were perfectly aware that realistically the world would be covered in plant life by now but that's not the art style/atmosphere they wanted so they disregarded realism, which is more or less how most of Fallout's world is built to begin with anyway.
If you really want a canon explanation just roll with acid rains.
[editline]8th December 2015[/editline]
To be honest a whole month worth of gameplay is pretty damn solid for a first release without any DLC and without the modding support.
The Creation Kit should be added by January 2016 I believe.
Didn't the rain that came after the Great War was filled with radiation and killed off most of the surviving plant lifes anyway?
I might have a really bad perception of time. But seven years seems like a lot of time to the point where you wouldn't need to cut stuff like that. Especially if you already recorded all the lines for it.

I'm sure they did rush their own release to sell more. They probably trimmed the fat in many areas to squeeze in a 2015 pre-holiday release. You have to remember: this is a fucking huge game, and Bethesda has a fairly small team (last I heard about 80, compared to CD Projekt Red with nearly twice that number for an RPG of similar scope).
I'm sure there were more reasons too. They were probably hoping to skirt by with the sub-par graphics by pairing it up with the newer releases before things like DirectX13 gives games greater fidelity. They new the graphics weren't that appealing and that come late 2016 they might not even be able to compete at all (shit, they barely compete already in many cases).
The more I play the more stuff I find that was clearly rushed or cut. The more I dig through the files the more it becomes apparent that this may be one of Bethesda's most chopped-down games yet. They really need a bigger team.
Is it too optimistic for me to hope bethesda would add-in the pre-holidayseasonrush combat zone?
I'm expecting a Broken Steel-like DLC that expands the endgame and gives some post MQ options for the player.
At least that's all I can hope for.
design choice
people are too accustomed with the idea of a post apocalyptic desert wasteland and they just go with the flow. putting trees everywhere is less "iconic" so they avoid it, which is a shame. i really liked Jacobstown and Vault 22 in NV just for being so different from the usual
"...and the climate changed horrifically. All the regions of Earth suffered from a single, permanent season once the initial dust blasted into the atmosphere by the nuclear explosions had settled – a scorching, radioactive desert summer."
It's on the wikia.

I went and did a simple recolor/edit of the generic green jumpsuit in Fallout 4 and made the ones you see in FO3/NV.

...Well I guess that explains why nobody in Boston is dying to New England winters.
That said, seasons are caused by precession of the Earth's axis, which nukes couldn't possibly affect.
So after restarting the game a good dozen times by now, I have for the first time been given another location to clear out than the Corvega Assembly Plant.
I wasn't even aware this was possible. I thought that first task from Garvey was always going to be Corvega.

The power of [sp]bullshit[/sp]
I wish you could change the color of your power armor's HUD.
I gave my new X-01 the red headlamp/eyes and the sensor system that highlights all enemies red, so I figure going full-on terminator with a red HUD would be cool.
Gotta say, the Broadsider's cool and all, but it's got nothin on the Serious Sam cannon.

It's a speaker/mic similar to how jails in real life work.
It would make sense that there was also extensive environmental pollution before the war.
Also if I recall there were biological warfare programs before the war that got out of control, it wouldnt be far fetched to think that a virus of some sort caused the death of much of the vegetation.
If nukes turned everything into a desert, why is Point Lookout still a swamp?
FEV virus
Ah yes, the Forced Evolutionary Virus Virus

its a glass wall....
try tapping on the glass, or maybe getting outrageously close to it in that big suit
btw props on bringing PA to the institute, they're all pathetic ants and you're ready to crush them beneath your boots if they annoy you, its just sort of fun to bring power armor to the institute because its overkill
Fixed my mistake
Ah yes, the Forced Evolutionary Virus Virus
The virus is so bad you have to put the word virus two times just to tell how bad the virus is.

there was a plague going around before the war but it was killing humans (and possibly communists!) but not the plants and such, the FEV was actually a means to cure it that kind of went off the rails

you know what they say.. patrolling the Mojave makes you wish it were the commonwealth
Wasn't FEV part of yet another supersoldier program though?
They wanted to create hulking bullet sponges that could walk right up and rip an infantryman apart. But then power armor happened and that was no longer needed.
The new plague was also an engineered virus wasn't it? The wiki says it was released by Chinese spies when they were caught trying to exfiltrate.
Could have mutated with all the radiation from the war or something, idk.

3ish locations that do spawn full suits, + you have to be over level 30 to even have a shot at one spawning
[sp]It was the only bomb that went off at ground level. The others were either atmospheric detonations (which is how our two atom bombs worked) or duds that hit but never blew up.[/sp]
[sp]The size of the crater and the level of damage makes me think it was a megaton range fusion bomb that airburst off-target, which could've been an experimental design the Chinese used to attack the Sentinel Site.[/sp]
Also based on what The Glow's crater is like, it's probably the same type of weapon. The other bombs were likely part of a "Scorched Earth" strategy to disrupt the infrastructure of the country while the main weapons were aimed at hardened strategic targets that posed a real threat to China.

the FEV was part of the pan immunity project, it was supposed to eliminate all diseases...except it got bogged down and somewhere they figured out it would be better for a super-soldier program instead, you know, typical prewar research, start out working on carving knives, and end up with a chainsaw-knife for soldiers to use in combat

actually the sizable crater sort of is accurate, if you want to destroy a hardened launch facility, you need to hit it in the surface or ideally below the surface, the problem is their weapon missed by a few miles, which isn't actually that unrealistic, in fallout its probably likely they didn't care so much about CEP as much as getting it there
