Valve / Steam / Steam Machines, General Discussion v2.0- "Is Steam Down again?"

i can guarantee it's literally anything except half life. Fuck, i'd even bet on a totally new IP.
It's probably just SteamVR considering thats what Chet has been working on for the past year. I believe this was posted before Valve said they will officially be announcing SteamVR at GDC, so it makes sense that it still says its a secret.
There's a chance it could be something deeper, but still related to VR
Or, fucking nothing :v:
This link censorship is bullshit. I can't even send reddit.com without it becoming {LINK REMOVED}.

With words not addresses
it doesn't help that i don't have an alternative to chat with
skype is garbage
google hangouts/chat service doesn't have a proper desktop version
everything else is a crippled beta
everything else is a crippled beta
XMPP.
https://pidgin.im/ for windows/linux
https://adium.im/ for OSX
There's Xabber and all sorts of stuff for Android.
Since XMPP works like Email you can chat cross service provider: so anyone on https://xmpp.net/directory.php can talk to each other.
There's also a small steam group of people who support XMPP: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/XMPP
There's also always IRC, everybody should know how to use IRC.
Dunno why you're disagreeing, XMPP certainly isn't a crippled beta, in fact every time I'm forced to go back to steam chat I feel like I'm using late 1990s proprietary chat services; Jabber is much more feature rich.

Also Telegram Messanger, but you need a phone number to verify.
Honestly the move to censor all links is probably the best thing Valve could have done in their situation. They need to keep the community friendly for newbies to consistently grow market share, while newbies have a tendency to not understand that there is an entire underground ring of account stealers out there because they're new and haven't found any real community to show them the ropes.
Valve can't really keep up with the network of zombie accounts, since the Steam item market is so lucrative that fishers have the resources to keep churning out new ones.
Outright banning links is the best option since it breaks the main hacking methodology without restricting the end user experience beyond a minor inconvenience. Even I, with 6 years under my belt, have accidentally clicked a fishing link in the wee late hours after a long day of lectures and found myself saved by Valve's protectiveness; I'm not going to miss links at all.
Anyway, if you still want to send a legit link all you need to do is say "81qyN1y" and "it's an imgur link, throw it after the dot com/" and I'm sure the other person will manage to figure it out. If they can't, then you should probably start to reconsider the people you're talking with on the internet.

I'm not putting my dick in line here, but here me out, I have a theory
Chet's biggest contributions in Valve are on L4D.
This was posted in the Half Life and Portal discussion thread:

And in 2013 The Verge demoed a Valve HMD and said THIS:
Though Valve co-founder Gabe Newell told us that the company wanted to put biometric sensors into game controllers, the team discovered that hands weren't a good source of biofeedback since they were always moving around. However, the team hinted to me — strongly — that an unannounced future VR headset might measure your body's reaction to games at the earlobe. Such a device could know when you’re scared or excited, for instance, and adjust the experience to match.
I have big hunch that after the reveal of SteamVR on GDC, Chet will announce L4D3 and its use of Biometric feedback to power the AI Director 3.0 technology it will use.
[editline]26th February 2015[/editline]
hear me out* editing my post makes it appear blank for some reason
The most recent Steam Beta build has changes that confirm that package/sub names are no longer made public through packageinfo.
TL;DR no more package names in licenses_print in Steam Console or on SteamDB. We have to go off other things now to retrieve names. Surprised it took them this long. :v:
Valve did that because they are getting ready to release HL3

Sounds great! I always wondered what happened to their biometric feedback stuff.
I think they also worked on control movement with your eyes.

He's referring to the prototypes. Chell, Gordon and d0g. Might be another one. I don't remember them all. :v:

I know, I'm just referring to what was accepted to UI information for big picture mode today.
There's stuff referencing different ways to setup the controls, etc, but it's interesting that haptics are involved

I think one was named Eli or something.
I think steam just died as a chat client for me. Having unwanted censorship in a chat client is absolutely unacceptable. It never should even touch the content of my messages.
I think one was named Eli or something.
Yeah, but that one was killed off pretty quickly.

Why wouldn't haptics be involved? Haptics are a core part in how the trackpads work/feel, at least on the first iteration of the steam controller.
They killed the code to name links in your steam profiles, thanks valve for treating us like kids.

Didn't realise PAX was straight after gdc.

Just to clarify, since the phrasing here seems to imply more than the actual session description does. The exact words are
This session's content is a closely guarded secret!
This says to me "we're keep the content of the session a secret" rather than "this session is about a secret we've already been keeping". In other words, it doesn't really seem to imply that they'll be finally announcing something we've been waiting for. All it's saying is that they don't want to talk about the session yet. Expect surprises, but not huge game announcements.
Pretty sure that session will be about SteamVR.
