Valve / Steam / Steam Machines, General Discussion v2.0- "Is Steam Down again?"

Oh right, it's pronounced V(eye)v because it's part of HTC's "re" line, as in "revive" just like their weird pipe camera
veeev sounds dumb honestly
Isn't it pronounced "Vaive"?
If so, then look at the "i" as an "l" and it spells Valve.
It's part of their "R E" line, so when you spell the full name for the product it's RE Vive. Just a silly hint about VR.
vive as in revive
I'M FILLING MY HEADSET WITH VOLCANICITY
Valve's GDC Schedule
Unless Valve starts doing press releases/interviews, there probably won't be anything on Monday (today).
There might be some news on Tuesday, but Wednesday is when the actual expo starts and when people get hands-on experience with the stuff Valve is bringing.
This page updates automatically so just check in once in a while to see if there's any news.
All times are in PST.
Monday
Nothing Valve related today, if news pops up we'll be sure to post it.

10:00am-6:00pm: GDC expo: Valve doing press demos of HTC Vive, showing off new Steam Controller/Machines etc.

Livestreams
According to Gamespot no Valve talks will be broadcasted by them during GDC. They say it's unlikely they'll be broadcast at all. We'll have to rely on people on the ground. Videos of the talks will be available in the (paid) GDC Vault after GDC.
Gamespot actually got kinda mad at us for linking to their stream even though we mentioned we weren't sure if any Valve stuff was being shown as they hadn't posted a schedule.
Oops. :v:

Why are they mad about a website linking too their stream :tinfoil:
Why are they mad about a website linking too their stream :tinfoil:
Because their indie sit-down program's chat was full of people going "༼ つ ._. ༽つ Give volvo"
I'm not even joking, I apologized to their community managers who seemed very confused and angry and got rid of the stream link. :v:

The wonders of Greenlight, gentlemen.
Seriously though, I hate it that games get on to the store because people go "XD le epic troll vote", and then the game comes out, then everyone buys it "fir teh lulz" and spam-gifts it.

and then the dev makes a sequel.
I'm really suspicious about VR in general, but with the Occulus and John Carmack working towards it as well as Valve & HTC, I might be being swayed away from the opinion of it being a gimmick.

See the real sad thing is that it's possible to have a serious and heartbreaking experience about dealing with the stigmatized, isolating and even terrifying experience of having such serious responsibility thrust upon you at a young age, and presenting this in tasteful way could let people who cannot experience such a thing understand what it is like to be pregnant as a teenager. But this is just lazy: stock photos with text plastered on it, and just from the previews gives a vibe that someone young and edgy is trying to get a reaction out of someone to boost their ever inflated ego, which in turn marginalizes what can often be dismissed by a culture that- something something oh shit a T-rex.
So I'm guessing the base station for the Vive just has a bunch of IR lasers that it shoots on the walls and the light sensors on the headset then detect them to calculate the position in the room. Sort of how Valve's prototype from last year used QR code stickers with cameras on the headset. The IR lasers provide much less setup and can be detected with much cheaper light sensors instead of cameras.

That's a terrible comparison. NVidia shield is what you mean.
Chromecast is awful. It doesn't actually stream the video, though there is a very crippled feature that offers it and less than half works (no audio, shit speed).
Chromecast just connects the TV to web content over wifi. You use your android phone/tablet as a remote controller basically.
Well I guess even closer would be OnLive's Console. Just using your own PC to stream the content.

Free for developers is something that was probably implied, but It's something new
Source 2 was confirmed and shipped(DOTA workshop tools) last year. Now they just announced it offically.

After nine years in development, hopefully it would have been worth the wait
