Fuck me, I'd rather build my own PC at this price.
Those Machines differ in specs... They're still branded by the Steam symbol, but each one is different. So where's that feeling of unity that consoles deliver? If I buy a $459.99 Machine, it's gonna be useless soon because of higher and higher system requirements.
Feels like wifi 1080p60 streaming has replaced the purpose of the steam machine.
the idea of a steam machine is a gaming pc that appeals to the console user demographic. it's a plug and play game machine that you don't have to worry about building or maintaining (for the most part) know how to build a pc? congratulations you're not part of the target demographic and get the benefit of being able to match the partlist for ~33-66% of the price.
you're not going to appeal to the console audience with PCs that cost four times as much as a console
They might if they actually start progressively advertising them like the consoles are. Seeing Alienware Steam Machine adverts on the TV would certainly do something even though it's a overpriced pile of crap.
Whenever I see people talking about the Steam Machines, I always remember back to the Daft Punk song from Human After All. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkEYnXd5VkY
You know, if they're releasing Source 2 as free and open, there might be the slight chance that they rewrote a large portion of the code base, sanitizing out all the Quake code from when Half Life needed to launch.

I'm pretty sure that they're doing everything they can to remove all the third party shit.
Alright. So I'm wondering, it's been two days since I lost access to my account. One morning when I started Steam, it asked for my password. I typed it in, and it said either my account didn't exist, or my password was wrong. So I think, maybe I don't remember my password, so I click "RETRIEVE A LOST ACCOUNT" I first did the username one. Then the email one. And the problem is, I DON'T RECEIVE ANY EMAIL CODES. I literally don't get any emails containing the recovery code to change my password/view my password. Sorry if I come off like I'm bitching. I've filled in a Steam ticket yesterday morning, and I only got a response asking for more info such as name and credit card info. This was my only day off, and I just wanted to play a game with my friend. Has anyone else had this problem and is there anything I could try that might fix this? Because if you ask me, it seems like my PC can't properly connect to Steam, and that's why I'm not getting the recovery emails. but I'm not sure. Edit* I've also tried reinstalling Steam, and deleting the .blob thingy.

Make sure it's not going into your spam folder.

just ignore.

Seeing Alienware Steam Machine adverts on the TV would certainly do something even though it's a overpriced pile of crap.
For $60-$80 more than the consoles, those specific machines seem like a reasonable deal for someone looking for an alternative to a console. Games will look fine with that hardware, that it would probably be better for some people to just pick one of those up instead of learning to build a PC. I can't imagine who would want to buy any of the more expensive ones, though.

The issue is Havok, Miles etc.
Spoilt little shits with parents that have too much money?
this is unduly harsh if i had buckets of money i'd certainly buy my kid the bestest machines out there or if i had buckets of money and wasn't really into computers as a hobby, i'd do it for myself you're basically complaining hatefully because people have money?
The issue is not the Quake code. The issue is Havok, Miles etc.
Apparently, Source 2 uses Rubikon for physics now. Not sure about the sound system, though.
Could be an inhouse system, since Rubikon is also inhouse.
Or something opensource. There is that sentence in Gabe's interview with MaximumPC that really suprised me, and it looks like nobody is talking about this:
"If other engine manufacturers see stuff in it, that's useful to them, well, they can integrate it in to their engines as well."
I can't embed video :/ rewind to 3:01

Call the cops, I don't give a fuck
It is interesting, but at this point we have no idea what license it may use or what restrictions there are to what Gabe said.
Yes, better wait till the proper unveiling, which is hopefully soon. And by soon I mean soon soon and not Valve Time soon.
Getting real tired of this "Error Code: -105" in the Steam browser. The worst thing is that I know why it's happening but I can't fix it because Valve doesn't give a shit. I run a modified HOSTS file that blocks ads, and anytime the Steam browser tries to load an ad that's blocked it redirects the entire page to http://error instead of just 404ing the ad. Meaning I can't access Wikia networks, Reddit, and various other websites that have ads. Removing the HOSTS file is counter intuitive as a lot of these sites have annoying ads that play video/sound and crash the Steam overlay or have ads that take up a large portion of the screen and basically make trying to visit these websites almost as much of a pain. And depending on the game alt-tabbing to go to my web browser causes the game to either crash, glitch up or stutter for a bit. I read somewhere that setting up a private Apache server on port 80 and having that redirect 404 errors would solve it but unless I configured it wrong (which is possible, I'm not well versed with it) I still get the Error -105 to show up. I have no clue how to fix this and it's really annoying, especially since months ago before they started doing that link parsing stuff and warning about going to external sites the browser worked fine with my HOSTS file.
I thought they confirmed there wasn't any quake code in source anymore a long time ago.
Source 1 had BSP when it was last used.
