I really wish they just redid the app, the theme doesn't even match steam's current blue theme. The iOS version of the app looks better.
Should ask HTC to make a fully functional application and experiance :v:

Supporting the creators is understandable, but they're mods, donating money should be optional and you shouldn't be required to pay for them. If they were being made into officially supported content or something that would be different.

There are probably other games out there as well that have mods you have to pay for.
I can't see this being good in any way, all I can think is that Valve saw yet another opportunity to make easy money and just ran with it. Modding communities are gonna have their morals and common sense put to the test, that's for certain. [editline]23rd April 2015[/editline] By that I mean not price gouging. Also I just thought, I play a lot of Don't Starve Together and I like to use mods. When and if this expands to that workshop, how will it affect the game? I mean, I play with people and if a mod I really like is a paid mod, will all of them need to pay for it? Just thinking that the rammifications of this on a multiplayer title like that might be huge.
Tell that to Fight Simulator, The Sims.. (I think Sim City?) If these were DLC items or added into the game properly it would be fine to have them paid-only.
I kinda like that they have the option but I'd prefer if it was a simple donation option.
It should be the way for you to still try out the mods for free and, if you think that they are worth it, you should be able to support the creator. At least you can get a refund if it's broken or doesn't work the way it should.
photo What is this? I'm not in the beta group, but I am in the steam client beta
It's a glitch, you can do the same with Steam Greenlight
I can't be the only one to see this "buy my mod" thing as absolute cancer.
I can't be the only one to see this "buy my mod" thing as absolute cancer.
everyone does, besides hardcore fanboys
I can't be the only one to see this "buy my mod" thing as absolute cancer.
I know, what kind of idiot would pay for a mod?
I know, what kind of idiot would pay for a mod?
That's not a workshop item though. It's also where it is in terms of popularity and replayability due to its fanbase that makes content such as new gamemodes for it. To compare this to paying for what will most likely be skins or a few weapons instead of a total conversion or something similar is missing the point entirely.
I know, what kind of idiot would pay for a mod?
Would you pay 0.92€ for a one model? http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=429403248 Multiply the price with ~16 and you have the price of base game, is this one staff compared to that even worth it.
I know, what kind of idiot would pay for a mod?
Ahaha, how did this make it through. Fucking greenlight lmao.
Would you pay 0.92€ for a one model?
Would you pay six dollars to put a model that's already on your hard drive on your character's head?
Would you pay six dollars to put a model that's already on your hard drive on your character's head?
I wouldn't but there are people that would, so I guess there will be people who will spend money on these mods too.
Something that most people seem to overlook is the following: Bad paid mods will not sell. Not even idiots will pay money for obvious cash grab mods. So they will be downvoted and die off. Mods that actually make it are the ones that people should look for, that have a remarkable feature or something similiar. Shit stuff won't sell, no matter how much the workshop gets.
I think one of the worst parts is the person who made the mod only gets 25% cut, I mean you probably will make more if you make great mod via donations and just putting your mod on sale in Workshop might just give negative reputation.
Guys, is this mods becoming purchaseable by any chance illegal? From what I recall, fair use doesn't extend this far and mods, even large, in-depth and containing huge loads of own work and creativity, are still by-products of the base game, without which they can't function and are fully dependant on. Given how interative of the main product modding is ,I doubt developer could just post "general" message to all the mod creators, that they are allowed to directly sell their creations like that. That to me basically sounds like cession of copyright and letting that particular thing go into public domain, since anyone can add/modify it and earn off of it. Also, fuck paying for mods. I am all for supporting creators, but I'd rather support a person than a file that can go all fiddly due to patch/another mod/codecs/etc. One last hope : pray that modders won't go down like whole DLC shit, where instead of using digital platform for ease of distribution of quality content, at lower price, with more ease, they decided to charge for horse armour and easy fatalities. That's a net loss to a community. EDIT I really hate going on a hate-bandwagon like that, but fuck me, what's next ? Charging people online if you help them get a kill? "Buy best teammates now, 24.99 for a month" . Youtube is adding paywall option, so that content providers can chose to charge for some of their content, like higher-quality stuff and things that are costly to produce, but most reactions I've heard of that are heavily negative, poiting towards growing a stable and following community rather than exploiting people for money at every opportunity.
A donation system would be much better than what is currently going on.
A donation system would be much better than what is currently going on.
Donation, Patron, Kickstarter, anything that doesn't involve shitty choice for a mod developer (do I go all communism on this and give out for free, or do I ask for at least something in return) and shitty choice for a player (do I trust this will be supported ? Will it break after a bit? What if game gets abandoned by developers ? What if it conflicts with another mod? What if there will be free version of it ?)
Guys, is this mods becoming purchaseable by any chance illegal?
Yes, Valve just added a mod-purchasing system against Bethesda's wishes. This makes sense.
Youtube is adding paywall option, so that content providers can chose to charge for some of their content, like higher-quality stuff and things that are costly to produce, but most reactions I've heard of that are heavily negative, poiting towards growing a stable and following community rather than exploiting people for money at every opportunity.
Youtube's paywall-videos service was added a long time ago. Nobody uses it because Pateons etc. are more successful.
Regarding the legal side of things, the thing is extremely shady As a law student, I can safely say that using the assets of someone's else product to produce something and charge for it isn't exactly legal It's like that Spongebob episode where Patrick starts buying Crabby Patties and reselling them at a higer price for his own profit
Yes, Valve just added a mod-purchasing system against Bethesda's wishes. This makes sense.
They agreed upon it with Bethesda. The info page says it's up to Developer to decide if featuring paid mods is something they want. But just because they want/don't want to do it, it doesn't mean it's legal or not, or at least that it won't have significant copyright related consequences.
Youtube's paywall-videos service was added a long time ago.
My bad then, but I recall something related to youtube's paywall changing recently. Was it tipjar or something else ?
They're adding a tip jar of some kind. I honestly don't know how it will work, whether it'll just be the ability to drop a Paypal link on your channel page or something bigger.
Would you pay six dollars to put a model that's already on your hard drive on your character's head?
Difference being you can't make your own and do that yourself because a server tracking items prevents you from doing so. It's an item in an online game not a mod that anyone can make and put out for free Edit: Why is there always some idiot defending horrifically bad practices
