Undertale megathread v5 - An award-winning RPG where nobody has to get SPOILERS. YES, that STILL inc
However, if Undertale is to be expanded, the concept could definitely work for [sp]Gaster[/sp] or [sp]saving goatkid[/sp].
My thoughts exactly. If those goals are to be achieved, it would be through gathering foreknowledge. And there's so much knowledge already laying around that could be used, like [sp]Flowey being Asriel's reincarnation/clone, humans potentially being able to absorb a Boss Monster's soul, the fact that Flowey can't really feel anything, the experiments that Alphys performed[/sp] and the list goes on.
Hell, my fic makes use of foreknowledge for the protagonists, enabling them to plan ahead to achieve their goals. Though it only goes so far, given that their earlier actions inadvertently altered the timeline and caused new variables to mess with the plan. [sp]Or more accurately, it split the timeline, in an effort to prevent troublesome paradoxes.[/sp]
Takes time to create, if not it's gonna end up like Five Nights at Freddy's; overdoing it.
That still makes me mad now.
FNAF 1 was probably one of my favorite horror games of the past 5, maybe even 10 years, but all of the rushed sequels were just going down this steady decline into an absolutely nasty clusterfuck.
I don't exactly blame Scott though. The dude was sitting on 15 years of games that were financial failures, and he finally has this hit. He finally has this franchise that he can make games with, and people actually like it. It's really obvious that he got way too happy and excited and just started pumping the games out because he liked making them so much, but that was all sacrificed for quality.
That's why I'm glad that Toby is obviously taking his time with this next game, instead of getting excited and rushing it out the door.
Alright, I've made all the happyness I've created naught and ready to do what needs to be done
Mind you, if I drop a single tear during the whole thing, I'm killing you guys next.
Best of luck. I don't know if you know this, but that route of the game is a lot more difficult than the normal runs, for many reasons other than emotional.
I did genocide WAY more times than pacifist so I say this from experience:
Get the Tutu and Ballet shoes before fighting Undyne. Trust me. You can thank me later.
So, help me understand a bit better the dynamic behind the main trio (Frisk, Flowey and [sp]Elia (my "Chara)[/sp]) of the Genocide run:
[sp]1) Flowey contains the souls of both Asriel and Elia. At the game's beginning, and for the whole of it, Asriel!Flowey urges Frisk to go on a murdering rampage in order to make the dormant Elia's soul awaken once more
2) Elia awaits dormant inside Flowey. Frisk's action during the run allows Elia to gradually migrate from Flowey to Frisk, to the point that actually very soon in the game some of your actions are not done on your own volition, but Elia's
3) During the course of the game, Frisk makes himself Elia's vessel, which allows the latter to completely cut out his link with Asriel!Flowey and kill it, being content with possessing Frisk to do his bidding[/sp]
Wow.
Snow and Cake are your best buddy's, save that shit for later.
[sp]Good luck on Sans, watching him is one thing, doing it yourself is a whole different ordeal..at this point is it really a spoiler?[/sp]

Genocide spoilers, dont read if you intend on playing it yourself.
[sp] The current theory is that when you land on the bed of flowers (aka Chara's grave) Chara ends up possessing your game and framing it as such, Chara is believed to be the one that literally represents the 'game' portion of the game; the fight, item, act, and mercy options. Chara is also believed to be the narrator of the game and is the one speaking when you have internal dialogue.
Throughout the game, should you decide to gain LV and EXP, you are directly playing into the game and feeding Chara power. At the end of the genocide route, Chara asks if you ever really believed YOU were the one who controlled the game, before quite literally destroying your save file and holding the game itself hostage, lest you make a deal to hand over Frisk's soul and any hope of a happy ending ever again.
Frisk is never possessed, YOU are, with the spirit of a ruthless gamer looking to 100% the game at any cost. You have no remorse, you stop for nothing, you're doing this because you think you have to. Chara is obviously shorthand for Character, and guess who names them?[/sp]
---
Call this a crackpot theory, but I honestly believe that this game's main theme is about [sp]abandoning that old gamer persona and learning to look at a narrative as a human being, deconstructing the dispassionate distance between gamer and game. You don't feel anything for the soldiers you mow down in call of duty, or the Pokemon you hyper-beam into oblivion; yet every monster you beat to death with a stick in Undertale has the potential to make you feel like absolute dirt, and I think that's the entire point. Chara is vilified by everyone but the simple reality is that Chara is an empty husk that represents your average gamer, they don't give a damn about the characters or the world, they're just dropping in to have fun and maybe reload some saves after they massacre a bunch of civilians.[/sp]

It seems like I'll have to redo my Genocide run because I've missed the whole "exhaust random encounters by killing everything" part in "Genocide"

Exhausting the spawn counters is what gets you onto the genocide run and keeps you there, did you like just do a normal run but killed all the bosses?
Geno has a whole new set of bosses and plays out very differently.
I like how even the cover of the vinyl soundtrack is filled with spoilers

It's almost been a year man.
Anyone going out of their way to look for/buy the vinyl will know what that is, and will have played the game.
Speaking of which, it's about 19 days until the 1 year anniversary of the game. Can't believe it's been that long.
That's a lotta Gaster references. I wonder if there's anything hidden on it.
You know, I do wonder if Toby's next game, given the "shrouded in darkness" thing, would be subject to some sort of ARG? That'd certainly get the community invigorated.

This, and every one of those sprites are meaningless without any context anyways.
-Asgore progress-
I laughed a bit more at this part than I should have.

I really hope toby updates the game, we're coming up on the one year anniversary.

Maybe Toby's been working on hard mode on the low? You never know.
I can't think of much else he could do with the game at this point.
If the game is bent on teaching me that killing an high number of people for no purpose in particular is extremely boring and time consuming more than anything else, it's working

That's probably the point. That eventually it becomes meaningless.
I think [sp]Sans[/sp] is the one boss from Undertale that made me reach my breaking point
I'll see if I'll have better luck in the next days
