Underrail - If Fallout, System Shock 2 and Metro 2033 had a threesome...

I imagine it would be difficult for a lone dev to add coop on a custom-made engine, especially if it wasn't made with multiplayer in mind. I'm not saying it's impossible or that it wouldn't be fun, but he's probably trying to focus on actually completing the singleplayer portion of the game.
Just saying "coop would be fun" doesn't really add anything to the conversation, because it's wishful thinking, and of course playing with friends is always more fun, but that applies to everything.
Don't take it personally, it's just that on pretty much every single player game people always say "oh they should totally add coop" and it's getting on my nerves.
I know this is an alpha and all but god damn the balance is horrific.
I made the mistake of thinking I could get away with a melee-oriented character so I dropped perception to 4. Guess who ran out of ammo and credits before he could land ten hits on the target in the game's starting tests.
Seems like a nice change from the regular shooter and FPS RPG games. Never enjoyed Fallout (the first) so not sure how I'm going to enjoy this, but it looks fun.

You can actually run up to the target and punch it, and it will count as a hit. I do that even with gun-oriented characters to save on ammo. I felt pretty clever when I discovered that, and there's plenty of stuff like that throughout the game. Of course, maybe he should still add infinite ammo just for that test but in General the game assumes you're going to discover stuff by yourself. No quest waypoints in this game, only a notebook with the current tasks that were given to you, and even some things won't be listed in there, you just need to pay attention.
At the beginning it might be hard to make credit, but the medic on the medbay level will provide you with free healing (so don't hesitate to abuse that to conserve your rare and expensive health hypos), you can also save some bullets by using the technique I mention in the first paragraph, there's also a footlocker beside the bed in the room you start in containing 300 credits that will help you start out (only discovered that one 10 hours in after I returned to that room). If you press tab, you can see all objects you can interact with on the map, allowing you to open ALL the containers and grab as much stuff as possible to sell back to traders (don't steal from containers that maker your cursor turn red, it means it belongs to a faction).
That's all I got so far. Oh, also if you go the the guy in agronomy (the one who's dissecting an insect) after the target practice test, he'll give you a quest to poison a rat with a special bolt, and then collect a sample. He'll give you a crossbow and blots you can sell or continue using after the quest is done.
Phew.
Oh man, I remember watching a gameplay video of that a while back and it looked phenomenal.

I already knew about everything but the rat quest (obsessive looter syndrome) but thanks. I just wish that my shit didn't degrade so rapidly.
this game is hard as fuck
I think that stuff should perhaps degrade like 25-30% slower and it would be spot-on, or maybe more items with a higher durability early. I know you can get items with a very high durability late-game and more efficient repair kits. The only thing this game is sorely missing right now are shotguns, but hopefully he'll add them soon.
I am stuck in the beginning. Where is the outpost I need to retake? All I find is metal doors that wont open and indestructable rocks
Sorry for the late response, I was in the Hospital for 12 hours yesterday (Hooray for the horribly underfunded Canadian Universal Healthcare system!)
Anyway, you're stuck in the full latest version, right? I'm not sure exactly if there might be something missing in the demo, but I might just do a walkthrough for the first few quests (probably up until the Vault mission so I don't spoil too much) for the retail version just to help people out (though I need to go back to the Hospital today for a reevaluation so that might take a while). It's a tough game if you don't know what to do (it's a bit easier when you do, but not that much).

Thanks, but I already figured out. I just didn't check a passage. Now it's done.
Not a single rathound made it out alive.

I would like to say that the game is good, I like it so far.
But on the other hand it's nowhere as versatile as fallout and nowhere as atmospheric as metro or the mentioned fallout. In fact the game is very linear. It's heavily combat oriented to, while I would like to have a doctor or a mechanic character. It lacks some random stuff in my opinion (read: random encounters from fallout), just to make everything be less expected.
Also the character walking speed needs to be doubled.
Going back to the good side - fuck yeah, the game is actually challanging, but not unfair. It's in some terms even more enjoyable then fallout in terms of combat (because in fallout you simply stand infront of your oponent and shoot him till he drops down or you die). I found myself actually planning my moves.
Welp, in a hospital bed using an interactive screen to write this, with a plastic tube shoved between two of my ribs because apparently I have a pneumothorax...
...that I got last Wednesday while I was - and I shit you not - playing Underrail.

That's it i'm never playing Underrail.
Still totally worth the hospitalisation, doubly so because of the free healthcare over here.
Wait a sec...
The doctor on the medical level in SGS also provides the player with free healing...
COINCIDENCE??!?
If I'd buy this on Gamersgate or Desura, would I get a Steam Key if it is greenlighted? (I already voted for it on Greenlight)
Pretty much can guarantee that you will. Most indie devs will do that when releasing subsequently on another platform during development (e.g. Kenshi and Project Zomboid). I see no reason why he wouldn't.
I've been having a blast with the demo, but the game is lacking a particular feature that has halted my progress quite severely twice now. Autosave.
[editline]9th April 2013[/editline]
How large, gameplay wise, is the full game compared to the demo?
I couldn't really say, but if you go on the official website and look at the dev log you can see all the updates that the game received since the demo release.
The newest version autosaves each time you move to another area.

Back from the Hospital, by the way.
So the demo basically ends with the GMS compound mission?
Demo convinced me

I love all the little details you can find in the game.
Like, if your HP is above 85%, you'll slowly regenerate health (basically meaning that small wounds like minor cuts and burn would heal without any medical attention), or if you drop caltrops or put down mines somewhere, they're gonna stay there forever until they're removed manually.
I love how nothing in the game is spoonfed to you. Gotta figure it all out by yourself.
Hi guys,
I'm Styg, the developer of Underrail.
Sorry I'm late for the party but I had to wait for an invite. :) Thanks StrawberryClock for filling in for me and I hope you're recovering nicely.
About the demo version - it's quite a bit outdated and it has a few technical issues. Such as it usually needs to be run in admin mode if you're using UAC because it puts the save games in the installation directory (usually program files). Some people also reported having trouble downloading it from IndieDB. I'm planning to update the demo somewhat in the near future and place it on Desura and GamersGate pages so hopefully that takes care of that.
While I think the game is fairly well balanced at the moment, I'll still be tweaking stuff throughout the development. The biggest problem right now in my opinion is that weapons degrade too fast (I'll be addressing that in the next patch) and unarmed combat not being viable past the early game.
About the amount of content currently in the game, it really depends on the way you play, but if you're not rushing through the game I'm guessing you'll need at least 15 hours to beat it. I have a lot more content planned and I'll try to add it as quickly as possible, but keep in mind that (at least for now) I'm just one guy working on it so it might not come out as quickly as you'd like.
If you're not a fan of playing games that are still in development or just want to experience the game as a whole you're free to hold on to your money until the full game is released. Though prepurchases do help me, there are other ways to support the game such as voting on Steam Greenlight and just spreading the word about it.
If you guys have any questions I'll be happy to answer them. :)
Cheers!
Just like to say, hey and thank you for taking the time to make an account.
I have only just started playing the game, looks good so far. If anything art could be more 'dirty', but I understand that art is low on the list.
Styg, your game is amazing, keep up the good work man. I've been playing the fuck out of this all weekend.

Are you intent on doing this by yourself or are you open to contributions to the game from your players?
URGE TO BUY: RISING
Do eet.
Started to play the Demo yesterday, it seems pretty cool so far.
I decided to try the demo but problems occurred quickly. When I press the "start new game" or whatever that button says, the game freezes. The music keeps going and fraps shows me that he game window is still active (framerate keeps changing).
