I had that. I'm fairly sure it was tied to me trying to port forward the game, to get it to unfuck its 'Strict' NAT status, which of course didn't help at all in the end.
Can't say for sure but I believe it was fixed by me simply enabling UPnP again which was how I was set up before screwing around with port forwards and crap, at some point after that it just stopped crashing at "Creating Squad..." and worked properly again.
Apparently servers go down for patch at 11:30 EST.

Computer->manage->network adapters->disable all except the one you're using to connect to the internet.
If that doesn't do it:
1. Buy a new router.
2. Bridge your modem.
3. Play the game.
4. $$$Profit!

I accrued that much in a little less than a month.
It's not that bad if you don't spend all your Renown on useless skins and attachments you won't use. Plus, there's about another 3 months till the next operation release, so you have time to work for them.

Random changes I've seen
Kapkan traps are not fixed, we knew this, they said it would be fixed in 2.1.
Castle barriers [I]are[/I] fixed, no more of that bullshit.
Thatcher now has a shotgun.
As defenders in ranked, you can't spawn the objective in the same spot every round in ranked now, you need to pick a new spot every time.
As attackers in ranked, you don't have to spawn all at the same point anymore. Team members can pick where they want to spawn individually.
Everyones ranks got updated. I'm Gold 1 now, up from Silver 2.

The Menu Backgrounds have been replaced with images relating to Black Ice.

I'm still betting on modem issue
I have a strong feeling it could be. Although, I'm crashing earlier now than I was on Steam, so I'm still confused a little. "Creating Squad.." crash only started happening once I got the UPlay version - I was able to load into the game previously and do a situation, although all of my previously completed situations had been removed. So I'm doing a fresh install of UPlay and the game with the update and hopefully the issue will be resolved. I've replaced the hosts file too.
My UPnP is enabled, but do you think I should uncheck and recheck for the sake of argument? Also just reset my router back to factory defaults.
Only reason I've been putting off network for so long is because my Uni housemate literally has zero issues with joining a multiplayer match.

No vpn Active? It's been known to cause issues with uplay.
