I don't think there is a better "budget" wheel than Logitech DFGT, so I'd go with it.
I'm looking into buying a steering wheel, but the better wheels are way more expensive than I expected.
Is there anyone here using the Logitech Driving Force GT? Is it a good wheel to begin with or are there cheaper alternatives?
I used a DFGT for a long time before upgrading to the G27. Internally the G27 and the DFGT give the exact same force feedback experience. The G27 is quieter, has leather around the wheel, a H shifter and a clutch etc but if you're not fussed about any of that then go for the DFGT hands down. Great wheel. Obviously not as amazing as the Fanatec/Thrustmaster offerings but for its price you're gonna get a lot of fun out of it.

You don't get more budget starter wheel than the Driving Force GT. It's what I use and it's perfectly fine for what it is.
You will eventually want a clutch and a h shifter though. When you do I'd suggest saving up for a "proper" wheel instead of a G27/G29 because honestly the difference between the DFGT and the G27 isn't really big enough imo
I've been considering a T300RS for a while now, but it really bothers me to spend so much money on just a wheel/pedals. Especially so when my joysticks costs half that, it's more expensive than buying a current gen console, and I don't even considering myself that hardcore a simracer.
H Shifter I don't care about. It's slower than paddle shifting, takes up space I don't have, and it doesn't feel anything like a real stick/clutch anyway. I do wish I had a clutch though, because starting off the line in some games is really inconsistent without it.
i think its worth the expense although id get the base they started selling at this point, the FFB is way better than the g27 and with starting with the base you have lots of options. from my t500 base i wouldnt upgrade to anything less than a direct drive wheel like the OSW or bodnar but they are really expensive

also iRacing just added a shitload of content to the base package
We are adding eight additional laser-scanned cars and tracks to our base level package, free of charge. New and current members will now receive a bonus of five additional cars and three additional tracks as part of their membership. The additions bring the amount of free content to a total of 12 cars and 13 tracks with a total of 28 different track configurations.
The NASCAR Truck Series Chevrolet Silverado circa 2013, NASCAR Sprint Cup Chevrolet Impala COT circa 2013 , NASCAR Nationwide Chevrolet Impala circa 2011, V8 Supercar Ford Falcon circa 2012 and the Indycar Dallara circa 2011 will be added to our base package.
All members will also have Concord Speedway, Daytona International Speedway road and oval course (circa 2007) and Phoenix International Raceway road and oval(circa 2008) added.
In addition to the bonus content, we have launched two new racing series – the Dallara Dash featuring the Indycar at Phoenix, Charlotte and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the Pickup Cup featuring the NASCAR Chevrolet Silverado at Daytona, Phoenix and Charlotte. These ‘fun’ series will be open to all iRacers, regardless of license level and are scheduled to begin immediately.
CM should get this guy to record a dlc spotter pack instant $$$
I managed to get nascar 2003 season up and running. But steering is fucked to hell and back. No matter what rotation I set my g27 at it will always be off.
When the netcode isn’t crapping on me and ruining races (which is much less likely than Project CARS having a game breaking, session ending bug), Assetto Corsa is great.
Lately I’ve been pretty mean to it, but it’s still my go to sim nowadays because of the great handling and populated servers. The last patch updated the FFB as well, and I love how smooth it feels. The new understeer option is also amazing and even beats out RaceRoom's understeer FFB.

Just bought Rfactor2, driving a stock car around Bathurst is both hilarious and satisfying. Any suggestions for mods, tracks, cars?
^ I'd like some suggestions too. Sim racing mods are so fragmented it's hard to find the good stuff.
I just bought rF2 as well, but I haven't played it yet because the downloader is incredibly slow at downloading cars and tracks. I could just play with the demo content but I've already played the demo.

Yeah, mods seem to either be from Rfactor1 or just aren't good at all. I've heard this Spec Miata is good http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/20325-SpecMiata-1-00 but I haven't tried it yet. My main reason for getting Rfactor2 has been that it has AMP which is close to me. Drifting the NSX around Charlotte has been fun too.
dont suppose anyone uses softth? i reinstalled and now its not fucking working in iracing, duno if it got broke in that patch or whati guess i can work around it but its impossible to go back to one screen now
I wish more Americans played racing sims. I can count on two fingers the number of times I've played on a server with less than 150ms of ping. Makes finding games really inconvenient too, because the most populated times are when I'm at work.

Maybe they're all playing iRacing.

It's a damn shame that Fanatec no longer makes their 'cheaper' wheels, the CSR and Club Sport V2. ~$300 to ~450 depending on what you spec it out, but at minimum you'd get a programmable 900 degree wheel compatible with the 360 (CSR only), PS3, and PC, metal paddle shifters and two pedals, with the more expensive one having three milled aluminum pedals with a pressure-based brake pedal, and a H-shifter and sequential shifter, one of which could be used simultaneously with the paddles.
Now all they make is an uber-expensive, end-all wheel set that costs a minimum of $860. :disgust:
The H-shifter is great for Euro Truck Simulator, if only because the coding for gears in that game is pretty silly.
I'd start accelerating, immediately slap the H-shifter into the next gear until its time to shift, then I'd tap the clutch and it would shift into the gear. It's pretty awesome for driving in cities or other areas where I need to use my mouse to look around, so I could just put in a gear and then queue up the next gear for when I'm ready to shift.
actually the cockpit in iracing borderless window looks better and im getting upto 200fps but the grandstands and pitroads hammer fps

That's pretty much how a splitter works
[editline]19th October 2015[/editline]
I think I once drove a unimog that worked exactly like that, except the shifter was just sequential
Monza is boring.

Also attempting to play against the AI in RaceRoom (because nobody plays it online) reminds me of why I don't like racing against AI. It doesn't feel like the AI cars follow the same rules as your car does. They take some turns in very strange ways that I just can't mimic in the exact same car, and meanwhile I can take some turns the AI just absolutely struggle with much faster than they can.
It doesn't feel right. Not to mention the thing in RaceRoom where if you touch the rear of an AI car your car just spins out in a completely ridiculous way.
458 Italia in new NFS, this isn't surprising.

Out of my experience, here are some of the mods that I personally have enjoyed to a grand extent at some point in some way; your mileage may vary (not in any particular order):
Cars:
Spec Miata: http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/mx5-spec-miata.2508/
ASR Formula 1 cars: http://www.asrformula.com/
Mak Corp group C: http://mak-corp.com.au/index.php/component/k2/item/66-group-c-0.79-for-rf2-released
Tracks

Sebring: http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/sebring-international-raceway.106/
Targa Florio http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/targa-florio.6272/
Assen TT circuit http://www.internationalsimracing.com/forum/index.php?topic=3545.0
Adelaide Clipsal 500 http://www.bsimracing.com/rfactor-2-adelaide-clipsal-500-v1-0-released/
I've only really scratched the surface of what the rfactor 2 mod scene has to offer, but here's a few pointers to start you off. Make sure to look out for news of new mods, because rfactor 2's modding scene is sort of hitting a new stride lately. And also, seeing as how you just got the game make sure to spend your time with the base content as well because it too is fantastic and should be enough to make the game worthwhile alone. I'd recommend checking out historic Monaco, it's my favorite track in the game : )

I personally just go straight to the website to download their content and then move it into my packages folder. I find it to be much faster personally, but obviously things might be different on your end.

Classic Monaco with one of the old open wheeler's is addicting! I've been mostly playing that along with the Corvette/NSX/Civic on Atlanta Motorsports park, and stock cars on Bathurst is also fantastic.
Got my Driving Force GT and it Dirt Rally became real hard of a sudden.

Once you get the hang of it and find some settings that you like it should get better. I started off with much worse times, plowing into everything with FWD, spinning out constantly in RWD... I turned down FFB and decided to go with 900 degrees despite the fact it isn't animated as such and my times have gotten way better than pre-wheel.
Yeah once I got my G27, started sucking at Dirt Rally, but slowly getting used to driving with cluch and H-shifter, and even though my times may be worse, I'm having so much more fun. At the end of the day that is what matters to me - a more immersive experience.
Someone on the Need for Speed reddit drew a map expansion concept for the new NFS.
