More games should do that.
More games should do that.
It's perhaps the only good thing the NASCAR games by Eutechnyx have.
R3e is not the game for me. No oval tracks available? Not worth hard drive space, at least in AC you can download modded tracks. Really stupid to declare your game a "racing experience" and then fail to deliver one of the world's first and most revered forms of motorsport. The focus on WTCC cars reeks of RACE 07, which would be fine if R3E was yet another goddamn expansion pack for that god-forsaken game, but I'm sick of driving the same damn cars over and over and over again. Sorry SimBin, it's just not that fun for me anymore.
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
So now that I've got that done and over with, the only games I really haven't tried yet are iRacing and PCARS. Eager to give them a spin once I have a little more money.
[editline]30th June 2015[/editline]
And if another fucking Steamworks game tries to get me to register for a proprietary account when Steam practically puts user registration on a silver platter, I'm going to just uninstall the game without playing it. Why do I need fifty accounts for all the games I play? I already use Steam. Use it, or lose it.
I don't know if this code still works, but PR-BLANCPAIN2015 should give you 3 months free in iRacing.

Just remember to disable auto-renewal, unless you want it to charge you at the end of the trial period.

Awesome! Downloading it right now. Does the referral thing give you anything? If so, I screwed up and should have asked for your e-mail so I could credit you with the referral
[editline]30th June 2015[/editline]
I guess I should clarify, my distaste for R3E comes from spending countless hours in RACE 07 and its expansions. Since I own them all, I feel like R3E is just another way for SimBin to get me to re-buy all the content I purchased for RACE. While I appreciate the newer and more modern simulation, I'll stick to the older stuff that I don't need to re-pay $15-20 a pack for.
Awesome! Downloading it right now. Does the referral thing give you anything? If so, I screwed up and should have asked for your e-mail so I could credit you with the referral.
Since you mentioned ovals in your other post, I assume you're gonna be doing some oval racing in iRacing? Watch out for the idiots in the rookie street stocks series. Not unusual for the race to end up like this while in rookies:

Also, as I've said before, I'd recommend downloading a program called Trading Paints. It lets you see and use totally custom paints beyond what you can do on the in-site paint booth. You can also download and use paints others have shared in the showroom if you don't feel like making your own/are shit with photo editing software.
Another thing I'd recommend is the Jimmie Johnson Spotter Pack, if you end up finding the default spotter annoying like I do.
Maybe I'm masochistic or it's just a form of oval Stockholm Syndrome, but I love those little quarterpanel taps that end up turning into full-pack spinouts and crashes. I'll try to avoid them as best I can, but without shelling out money to become eligible for the Carbeurator Cup I think it will have to make do.
And with that typed, iRacing just finished downloading my cars and tracks. Time to give it a spin (not literally, I hope)
I like them too, as long as I don't get caught up in them, myself! :v:
Are there any racing games like Gran Turismo 3 on PC?
Are there any racing games like Gran Turismo 3 on PC?
Depending on your PC's specs, you could always just emulate Gran Turismo 3/4 itself.
Initial reaction: boy does Charlotte feel good to race. Love the changing feeling of the FFB as the tires heat up and the G-forces send the rear of the street stock ever so slightly out sideways as you head down and into turn 1. The groove feels right, everything feels really tight in iRacing. Now I wait patiently for 5pm, when I go hands on into racing! But before then - a qualifying session
Depending on your PC's specs, you could always just emulate Gran Turismo 3/4 itself.
I can emulate them, but I wanted to play something different. I already almost completed GT3 on my PS2 though, I'd rather not go through that grind again.
I know I can unlock cars and stuff with those GameShark codes or whatever they were called on the emulator, but it's boring that way. (I did that to play with some of the cooler cars, as I was never able to unlock them)
AFAIK, and I've looked, there really aren't many games that follow the GT formula enough to enjoy on PC. I try to play the Need For Speed games to fill that career-accomplishing hole, but nothing really does the GT Career style of singleplayer. Most games are just like the TOCA series was; race beginner series. Win and move on to slightly more powered variant of beginner series. Unlock first sponsor. Race first pro-am series. So on and so forth ad infinitum.

I tried GRID but I've quit halfway through before finishing the game. GRID Autosport doesn't have the same feeling as Gran Turismo 3 either, Autosport feels so lifeless compared to GT3.
I love the soundtrack in Gran Turismo, the Autosport OST is kinda bland and depressing to me.

Gran Turismo 3 is also so much more prettier than the Grid games, I'm not sure why, but it's far more colorful, and I love the HUD. GT3 also reminded me of how much I love SSX 1, I guess I'll have to emulate them again.
GRID Autosport is as close as you're going to get to the kind of game GT and Forza are. Those kind of broad appeal and singleplayer focused games just don't exist on PC.
[editline]30th June 2015[/editline]
I spent a long time looking for a Forza equivalent on PC and after finding there just isn't one, I ended up buying a wheel, getting into PC racing sims instead, and here I am now.

I'll probably try Autosport again. The AI is insane though :v:

I'm hoping that Next Car Game will be decent at least on release. I don't really have money for a wheel, I do know how to drive a real car though, but otherwise, meh, I have to play racing games with a controller, not that I mind that though.

Thank fuck someone else noticed. I own it for PS3 and it's literally unplayable with a controller. The AI will kamikaze you and spin you out whether you like it or not, and the game is so fucking unforgiving that it punishes YOU for being off track and not the AI driver for plowing into you at full speed.

Most races do get a little bit too tense for me, I've never actually ever felt this stressed out after finishing a single race V:v:V
I'm not sure what they were thinking.

Driver San Francisco? Ehh? Driver SF is a pretty cool racing game though, the way cars handle is neat, and the cockpit mode is actually fun to use, I really like to drift around in a Ford GT. I'm dissapointed they never announced a new sequel to it. I know it's not very sim like, but, I really enjoyed it, even the soundtrack is cool.

The world's first closed circuit was an oval. The world's SECOND closed-circuit racing track was an oval. It's one thing if you want to make jokes like every snobby European does, it's another thing to blatantly ignore the heritage of the sport. If you weren't educated before, let me enlighten you: there would not be racing as we know it today without ovals. Yes, that's right. Not to mention Europe couldn't even race unless it was on an oval - most countries banned open-road racing by 1903.

I thought it played great with a controller. I remember changing something in the options to make it feel good, and after that I loved it. The AI is super aggressive, yeah. I don't mind it so much in GRID though because I don't really take GRID all that seriously with its more relaxed physics. I liked it and thought it was fun, but I mostly do Touring cars so it's not a big deal if those cars get banged up a little.
On iRacing though, you picked a good time to get into it because soon they're going to finally add dynamic track surfaces. rFactor 2 already does this and it's awesome, but it's especially important in iRacing ovals because it allows the outside lanes to get grippy and create new fast lines through the track.

The GRID multiplayer got pretty silly sometimes, it wasn't too unusual for everyone to just die right at the starting line. It was either the starting line or one of the very first corners you'd meet up ahead.

I know it's not a sim but, did anyone else enjoy Jak X? I haven't seen any games like this anywhere else. (not on the same level of polish at least)

But seriously, if you want to get into an argument about it.. the fact that ovals were the first form of racing doesn't mean that they must be relevant today. The steam machine made the industrial revolution possible, but you don't see it powering fucking car assembly lines today. And that's not even a good analogy. Tracks didn't have to be oval for race cars to be able to drive on them, did they? The ban of open road racing didn't mean you had to have ovals.. just closed tracks.
The Nordschleife was built in the 1920's... quite early in the days of the automobile. And yet it's not an oval.
Apart from that, I totally understand the appeal of oval racing, I appreciate the drivers' skills, and I am aware that it's a much more complex matter than "making a car go fast in circles".
Maybe I'm masochistic or it's just a form of oval Stockholm Syndrome, but I love those little quarterpanel taps that end up turning into full-pack spinouts and crashes. the carb cup has no penalties to safety rating, so is essentially a demoliton derby. don't bother with it, just try to get out of the rookie oval licence and do a D class oval series

I just bought the Radical SR8 on iRacing as this week it's at oulton park (the best track ever), next week it's at phillip island and after that it's at sebring. I already own all of these and the SR8 is a mental car that's very rewarding to drive so I thought yeah why not and bought it
Done some practice laps now and it's feeling amazing, glad to be back into iRacing too
Does anyone know of any good oval tracks with decent banking for Assetto Corsa? (with AI support)

That's funny....being built in the 1920s, long after the popularity of ovals peaked, seems to go quite nicely with what I was saying. Once cars were able to handle ovals, it made sense that engineers would try to re-create open road racing on closed circuits......so what was your argument again? It seems like all you've done is agree with me - that road courses stem from a common ancestor, the oval. What I said had nothing to do with relevancy to today's racing. I explicitly said that I was talking historically. Are you going to tell me the Indianapolis 500 is not one of the most influential races ever run? The legendary Reims-Gueux was designed to have gentle corners and wide-open straights....another vestigal feature from the oval. I don't intend that all racing games should have ovals - quite the opposite, actually - but misrepresenting a video game (which is the same problem I have with Sony calling Gran Turismo "the real racing simulator") is not fair. Then again, not much else is.
Are there custom setups in iRacing? I just completed my first race, managed to survive a T1 demo derby just as predicted and finished 14 out of 20. I had qualified 8th and it seemed like even when I was in the groove and on the draft, other cars were pulling away from me. My gut instinct was that the other cars were slightly better tuned for Charlotte and that I had gone in with a default setup, but I'm so new to the game that I didn't even check the possibility of custom tunings before racing.

The only genuine oval I know of is Jacksonville, but I don't believe there's AI support for it. Aosta has an oval configuration but it's a non-oval oval so to speak.
[editline]30th June 2015[/editline]
The whole "ovals!!! murica!!!" joke gets tiring if you've been a fan of motorsports for longer than a year. Typically it's said by those who lack a good solid understanding of what it takes to race on one, so I apologize if I type-cast you that way.
