Okay, heavily considering buying Sims 3. Might get Sims 3 Plus Showtime, because it's a cheap expansion.
What is the most essential expansion? They're so damn expensive, I'm limiting myself to one.
I liked Ambitions, Seasons, and Late Night the most.
I guess you could look those up and decide from there. Lazy Game Reviews does excellent reviews of all the expansions.
Seasons, Generations, Ambitions and Late Night seem pretty legit. Pets is alright but kind of niche, Supernatural I've heard is pretty splitting as far as community opinion goes.
Stuff packs are useless and the Sims 3 Store is stupid.

So, so worth it though. Already put 2 hours straight into the game after it downloaded. I have a lazy genius weirdo dude who works for the cops, dates the mailwoman, his roommate is an ambitious but lonely, nerdy black kid, and they're going broke replacing the coffee table the cat keeps destroying.
Bought Supernatural after I started this group of weirdos though, so no supernatural zany stuff.
I have every expansion but Ambitions, should I get it? I'd get Showtime but it really has nothing of value.
Does anyone know of any Freetime mods that get rid of Mr. Humble?
Is there a mod that allows you to build and use a meth lab for the Sims 3?
I'm sorry, but the Diesel stuff pack furniture is so stylin'... I couldn't resist it.

I loved ambitions but sadly ghost hunter (my career) is still pretty bugged and they've yet to fix it...
Just bought Ambitions on steam, and rebought the Sims 3 because I needed it for ambitions (I own Sims 3 and World Adventures on hard copy, but fuck it, it's on sale!)
Seasons is on sale on Steam for 50% off. It's the daily deal.

Yeah, the OP is very lacking. Needs some gameplay videos, reviews and mods.
Got Sims 3, Ambitions, and Generations. Holy shit, so many new features.
I haven't played Sims 2 in [I]years,[/I] so last I played was Sims 1. My mind is legitimately blown how I can give my Sim a job as a designer/remodeler, get a job for her, follow her to that job, and then do it with her.

First time playing ambitions. Made a geeky guy, an eccentric loner who spent his nights inventing in his workshop. From the beginning I sustained myself on the profits from my inventions - only §4 or §6 at first, but soon growing to §10 or §15. Then I hit it big with a floor hygeniator, which sold for $150 per. I wasn't rich at first, but it was enough to buy some new furniture.
After several trips to the graveyard and many, many days of inventing, I managed to create the harvester and the miner. I decided to try the miner out - I placed it out back and started to mine. Within a few seconds I'd hit my first cavern. Though my profits from this adventure were low, I did manage to reuse the miner to gather many gems. I actually collected 5 or 6 Mysterious Mr. Gnomes and sold them each for §1,000. I was swimming in money. Spruced up the place, bought new appliances. Started cooking a bit, improving my handiness skill.
Then, as I was inventing, I created a time machine. I placed it outside the house. After preparing for my adventure, I hopped in and traveled back in time. I did this several times. The final time, however, I accidentally came back with a kid. I couldn't think of any way to get rid of this kid (besides killing them), so I decided to push them to the back of my mind and do what I did best: invent.
Then my pants lit on fire and I died.
