If people want it and are willing to resub / remain subbed, because they can play on official Vanilla/BC/LK/Cata/MoP servers then why is it a bad idea?

Because it's a terrible waste of time to dedicate resources to making this happen for what is essentially a niche minority.
You know, they could completely redo the way levelling works with servers like this.
1-60 pure Vanilla experience then have a onetime option to switch to a pure TBC realm for 60-70 experience, and so on.
Just because these versions are the past doesn't mean they have no value. In fact if they deployed a full-scale system like this it would mean they wouldn't have to rework old content all the time and could focus all their power on current events and content of the game.

Because 6.2 PTR has %25 damage nerfs to Demo across all it's spells.

It'll be the Runescape fiasco all over again.
People complain its not like the old days, so Runescape makes 07 servers, subscriptions go up suddenly before bombing hard when people realize their nostalgia wasn't the same.We see how people have reacted to Blizzard introducing the vanilla raid for the 10th bday and it wasn't positive. I would easily say that modern WoW is a lot more difficult to understand and play than Vanilla was; what made Vanilla hard was it was slow, you had to do a lot of grinding to get anywhere and things cost a lot of money.
The only thing most of these people miss is their childhood and happier times they associate with the game.
Fortunately my memories of vanilla WoW was not getting passed level 19 and dying a lot, along with trying to sell junk from grey mobs (which I was trying to grind Runescape style) to vendors so I could buy white gear.
The WoW community made Warcraft what it is today, with its complaints. Those who demand it be harder or want the old days are niche and often go to play private servers anyway. But I suppose when Blizzard gets desperate they'll try to do a Runescape 07 [I](but with what happened there, its probably why they won't do it)[/I].

They're actually pretty even at the moment, with OSRS gaining in popularity, but you don't see a significant drop in EOC at the same time, so I wouldn't say consistently

For me, personally, nostalgia runs out pretty quickly, I played on both OSRS and Vanilla WoW private servers, and I didn't play for more than a month, just because it makes me see how much better the current version is in a lot of aspects, and having to redo what I've already done gets annoying after a while.
