Having your turrets a forward facing flat surface is not a good idea, they fuck around so much because they have to adjust to facing where you're looking by rotating around, even if where you're looking is right next to where you were looking, the turrets have to do a 180 rotation to get into place.
couldn't you just use the turret mount block to fix them in place so they are always facing forward

also i lost my ship. Was evading some aliens and evaded into an asteroid.... I had just sold all my extra modules and weapons and sold or used up all of my ore. I decided to delete the save and see what a different seed would get me.
I really shouldn't spend yet more money on an early access space game, but goddamn does this look tempting.
Few questions:
- What's the flight model like? Fully Newtonian like Corneroids where centre-of-mass and thruster placement matter, magic like Starmade, or somewhere in between?
- Is there physical damage from collisions, and how well done is it?
- How competent is the AI? Any difference in their competences e.g. veterans closer to the centre, or is it mainly ship size and design?
- To what extent can one manage their own empire, and how in-depth is trade? I noted that one can hire captains to pilot ships for you, how much stuff can they do e.g. is it as extensive as the X-series in that regard?
• I wouldn't say it's "fully newtonian," but it tries to simulate it as far as I'm aware. you have engines which always face to the rear of the ship and the further you place them from the center of mass (so the further the engine from the body of the ship the better) you gain more thrust. Then there's thrusters which just shoot little jets of gas in 360 directions and the more you have the more braking thrust you'll get. It's not exactly the most realistic modeling in the world but you do have to do a 180 and smash on the thrusters to brake sometimes depending on your build and how fast you're going
• If you hit something you can shear blocks off of your ship. If you have a really wide ship and you smash in to a smaller one, it has the ability to rip your wing right off almost like a clean cut. The game does a pretty good job at modeling destruction whether it be caused from weapons or by ramming stuff. There's "hull integrity" blocks that you can place inside of your ship which essentially make the surrounding blocks stronger to impact damage. You can make a giant dick shaped ship and fill the interior of it with hull integrity blocks and kamikaze in to everything you could ever want and fly off without so much as a scratch
• The AI is retarded. the only difference in your AI as you progress to the center of the galaxy is that you'll start fighting ships that have shields. that's really about it. the AI just kind of float towards you and their turrets open up on you. pretty much every turret in the game works on a rotating swivel so they'll shoot at you regardless of where their ship is facing
• empire stuff isn't really implemented yet. you can make your own space stations and mining stations and you can sell the materials from said mining stations. you can have a fleet of mining ships to mine ores from asteroids and then you can sell those. the second you leave a system, though, the game just forgets about them and the next time you go back to it nothing has progressed at all. ships are still working on the same asteroids they were mining 3 days ago and the station is still pretty much useless. you have to hire a crew for each ship and for your stations, and the trading system IS pretty indepth. there is an actual tool you can get for your ship to help you calculate the most profitable trade route and what to buy/sell to make a profit which is really nice

It's realistic ENOUGH that you have to do retrograde burns to slow the eff down in large ships, but still retains a bit of that Freelancer feel, especially with fighters. The collisions are like Space Engineers, but without the cool warping and damage of the blocks. And the AI is about like the AI in the X series as far as I can tell, except in the X series, your CPU gets eaten alive since it keeps track of what the AI is doing in all the sectors while this doesn't

Are the engines like that just as effective as 1 big one in the same area?
From what I know about that shit, Engines aren't effected by the size if they take up the same space as a big engine, however thrusters don't follow the same deal, I've found that smaller ones are sometimes alot better than bigger ones, mostly due to there being more spaces in which the thruster can thrust.

Forward facing in that case would be down.

What I've done to address this is have my main ship act as a mothership, with enough crew (1 captain, one mechanic, 1/2 miners) for several single-turret resource collectors, and do stuff like build, fight or salvage while they crack on. Once it's time to move on, I simply transfer the crews back to my main ship, and delete the resource collectors to be rebuilt upon finding new resources.
Also another general tip for combat ships - if you're tired of losing your guns to enemy fire, build a "barrel" into the nose of the ship, and place the turrets inside that (with a rotation lock - unmaneuverable ships need not apply). Note that lateral/vertical drift will sometimes cause the slower projectiles to hit the inside of this barrel before they leave, but this can be offset by giving yourself a good run-up to the target or better management of thrusters
Are the engines like that just as effective as 1 big one in the same area?
Pretty much. It's 4 large engines, I just added grates for aesthetic purposes
Engines that are too big do hamper your acceleration sometimes, I've noticed that making them smaller changes their respective stats from yellow to white
Just got this few days ago, its really fun. I helped some AI faction take down a station and got a ton of loot that I didn't have cargo space for, so I just slapped a bunch of stuff on.
Only problem now is that I have to find someone who will buy my "stolen" merchandise.

Also make sure to check out the mods people have made, there is some great quality of life stuff and I wouldn't play without it.
Heres what I'm running on my server lazily copied from my notes, as an example.

Does anyone know if its possible to host an empty galaxy just for creative building? I don't think my VPS can handle another universe.
None of my friends and me included can play the game in singleplayer because of that weird local server thing the game has going on.
If you have a hidden sector scanner, some of the yellow blips that it throws up on the galaxy map around you might be a smuggler station - they can buy your stolen shit.
First attempt at making the Liberty Cruiser from Freelancer, fucked up the scaling, shit's too thin, gotta redo.
The style of the ships though from Freelancer is appealing for recreation.
i got a tip if you set the scale grid to to .05 and make the thruster as thin as possible you can stack them on top of each other. by doing this you can make your brake thrust op even better on a bigger ship.
Unless on the Beta patch in which case that's not that useful.

beta patch makes it so thrusters are volume-based instead of surface-based so yeah that trick isn't going to be around for long
Made another new ship

or do you guys mostly play singleplayer

Oh good - that was a silly thing to have TBH.
I also think he should make the stack shrinking impossible to prevent solar stacking exploit (it is simply too broken)

Made a Corpus Transport from Warframe, or tried to, made mostly out of Trinium, I'm not happy with it though, I still need to get used to the ship construction, this particular example is terrible to steer, I hit almost everything with it.
Are there interiors for ships?
No, and the devs said that they don't want to do that either, at the very least not until they are done with the main part of the game.

really getting into this game. The ship editor is a bit of a learning curve but you can do some incredible things with it.
What Grid/Snap Size do you use?
.25 for any structure so that it snaps together neatly then i drop down to .05 (loweset) for any details
Made a weird looking ship. Otherwise I really like this game. Say compared to Space Engineers I love the fact that there are factions and a story/quest line.

The Alliances Update is going live on the beta branch today, the big new features are player alliances, coop ship flying, proper out-of-sector simulation, UI and build mode improvements and better server performance.
The multiplayer will probably be a bit more lively again after it is out.

How does the maneuverability of ships compare now with the thruster-stack exploit removed? I'm not particularly interested in playing again if I can't fly my ship like a fighter.
Game just got a decent combat update, adding bigger turrets, torpedos, point-defense, etc
Anyone still playing this? Would love to actually play the multiplayer with some people.
Yeh I still play it every so often. Still not gotten to the core in any playthrough.
