I always loved the bloodspray in the alpha, ever since I saw a video of Half Life on a demo disc way back when. It just seemed so much cooler than the random explosion of blood they ended up with.
Trying to see if I could get it running on linux... Any ideas?
Trying to see if I could get it running on linux... Any ideas?
heavily doubt you'll ever run it on linux, as it was intended for windows and doesn't even run great on that.
Woo, fixed it! God damnit.
Woo, fixed it! God damnit.
Could you not run a virtual windows 98 machine or something under Linux? Or am I just being stupid?
You have to run with your desktop set to 16-bit color.
Woo, fixed it! God damnit.
delete the opengl32.dll in the main folder.
delete the opengl32.dll in the main folder.
Doesn't apply; he is running the software renderer.
delete the opengl32.dll in the main folder.
I already did that. Console output if anybody is wondering:
err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 42x37x8 @60! one of the best proof the perfection OpenGL, it still works the same way as 16 years ago :D
one of the best proof the perfection OpenGL, it still works the same way as 16 years ago :D
Unlike DirectX, which killed its Retained Mode 7 years ago so we can't run the beta Worldcraft without errors.
lol this thread's now being linked on kotaku. Not sure why they wouldn't want to link the original reddit thread instead but I guess this thread does have more info so SURE OK HI ALSO, I've noticed if you try to go over 4 players on MP, the game tells you to check techinfo.txt (?) for the launch parameters needed to go over 4 players. But I can't seem to find that text file anywhere (unless I'm missing it somewhere). So, any ideas? Would be pretty hilarious to try out MP with a ton of people.
I looked though the other data included on the disk and I found this:
HALF-LIFE Synopsis The Portal Device is a dimension-spanning gate of unpredictable power, constructed in a decommissioned missile silo. So far no one has ventured through the Portal, but there has been a steady flow of odd creatures coming to our world. You are a weapons research scientist who has never touched a weapon—until now. An accident in the Threshold’s power core fractures the local fabric of spacetime, and hordes of creatures begin spewing into our world through the fissures. Monsters are everywhere, and your co-workers are dropping like flies. You head for the surface but the usual routes are unpassable—damaged by the disaster and infested with monsters. The silo security guards are in a state of primal terror and looking for someone to blame. The obvious scapegoats are the scientists. Namely, you. In your flight to the surface, you acquire a device which means the difference between victory and annihilation—but you don’t realize whose victory, until too late. As the Portal experiment’s first human subject, you are cast into the alien world to confront the ultimate horror…to cut off the invasion at its source. In Half-Life, you won’t just go head-to-head with an alien boss—you will fight it from the inside out.
Maybe the ideas for portal were already forming in the minds of some Valve employees all the way back in '97?
one of the best proof the perfection OpenGL, it still works the same way as 16 years ago :D
It won't soon enough, they want to get rid of the old OpenGL stuff for a bunch of reasons.

Pass the -listen # or -dedicated # parameter, with # being the number (up to 16 in Quake, but Half-Life's white paper says it does 32. but do we really have 32 players to test their hype
Sprays are infinte and can be toggled via mouse3, I like the animation of the spray.
I GOT IT WORKING ON LINUX! [t]http://i.imgur.com/3vicF.jpg[/t] A bit glitchy so I had to take a pic with my phone.

And the idea for Portal was in the minds of Nuclear Monkey, not Valve.
In the DM video:
ho ho ho now i have a machine gun
I love this reference!

Also, it being called the "Portal Machine" or whatever is just a weird coincidence.
i'm really fucking glad they changed the plot, tho. the one from this release seems to be just like Quake 1 and 2 mashed together with a few bits changed.

The Portal Device appears to be that thing with red Panther Eye behind glass.

So I talked to a friend yesterday about this and it turns out he beta tested for Half-Life way back in '97 and he still has the disc somewhere. It probably predates this alpha, because his version doesn't even have hand models. He said when he moves soon, he'll try to find the disc for me and I'll try to upload it.
currently attempting to meld some of nfs3's chrome lighting into the beta. Its going to be a looooong night.
i've tried six different tools to try and decompile them/get them to work
Oh, of course they'll need some altering, but it's a better start than using a Quake decompiler as a base.
A beta that predates the alpha?
