Particles were hardly a CPU burden in the engine, Quake did them fast that even a C implementation would be fine. The most intensive rendering functions relate to refreshing the lightmap (surfaceblock) and drawing the wall spans. Half-Life already did away with the faster DrawSpans16 function
Also, not interesting as the game, there's some early QUAKE DEV BITS in the gfx/menu/ folder, particularily player1.bmp for the player setup screen. In addition there's also an early "showturtle" in gfx/status/chip.bmp, early disc/disk loading icons, and early "showram", and some really freaky early Quad damage faces and "gibbed" faces. However unfortunately, they have had their palette shifted and recalculated.

Pretty sure you can rebind it in the console if you want. "bind e +use" should work

They are probably leftovers from Quake.
Noting the sounds of the SMG from the videos in the OP and the SMG's design, I'd say that the SMG was supposed to be silenced, maybe used by the Ninjas or something.

They weren't even compiled for Quake, either. These are early never-before-seen bits since qlumpy would take these BMPs and chop them up into lmp files sectioned off as specified in QC files. These unused graphics weren't in those qc scripts.
The gfx/ subfolders are the only extent in where there's early quake material.
And here I am playing Counter Strike: Source, we have come a long way.

Even Quake didn't have the face being gibbed like that in the hud. Reminds me of how the Playstation/Saturn port of Doom added 'gibbed' animations for if the player got blown up.
Quick question,
If games back in the Quake days were focusing on optimization, why is there a ton of un-used content in the game's files? Surely it would be nicer on computers to get rid of excess textures and models.
