Quick question, If games back in the Quake days were focusing on optimization, why is there a ton of un-used content in the game's files? Surely it would be nicer on computers to get rid of excess textures and models.
Well this is a alpha build, so they probably weren't focusing on that yet.

Surely it would be nicer on computers to get rid of excess textures and models.
Quake had handled that fine with their qfiles tool in which it would grab every precached file specified in the QC files to make a PAK file. Everything is grabbed are files that are used. The unused content are just a few sounds mistakenly precached and a snarky sell screen. Not very "excess". Valve is.......... much less so, since even in their final build they pak a few stray bmp files. It's not like they load every file they have on load. Optimizing in the 90s is unrolling the hell out of loops in x86 asm, and creative lookup table usage.
This is neat, i can run these old maps on normal half-life 1. Its interesting how it supports the older map formats.
They also can be ran in Quake, with the lightmap data incorrectly parsed since it is the old BSP29 header. Changing the first byte to 1e should make them recognizable as BSP30 to engines that support it (i.e. Darkplaces) Having a software engine that loads HL wads and HLBSP as well as its lighting is handy
Geoff Keighley has a version from 12/16/1997, maybe get him to share it (unlikely). It would be so interesting to see how it was however.
Just as an FYI, you can rocket jump with the SMG's grenades. Be sure you're in God mode tho. Makes getting around a lot easier, especially in C1A2c.
Comparing the alpha to the retail version, you can see a huge contrast in art style. Now compare the alpha to Half-Life 2 Episode 2. It's insane dude, like, my mind is blowing up and shit maaaan
Hello Kitty and Frutopia
I know I heard that from somewhere, I can't quite remember where.
Depends on if it's the original disk. If so then that thing is worth a fortune.
Think this HL Day one CD is worth anything? Not a scratch, apparently was an OEM demo shipped around 1997 It goes from the beginning to the end of Office Complex, in this version apparently gman will run away when you shoot at him, tried it myself and it seems to work.
A guy uploaded a video of the alpha campaign on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsECRlcj1wQ
Not a scratch, apparently was an OEM demo shipped around 1997
It shipped with certain Riva TNTs in 1998. There's not many audiovisual differences in Day One compared to final (sadly)
bind 1 "impulse 1" bind "2" "impulse 2" bind "3" "impulse 3" bind "4" "impulse 4"
Put that in autoexec for those that want the crowbar plus easily switch between the weapons. Also does anyone know how to show the HUD?
It shipped with certain Riva TNTs in 1998. There's not many audiovisual differences in Day One compared to final (sadly)
Mine came with a soundblaster card along with some other games, though I only kept HL (i think it came with AvP?)
Put that in autoexec for those that want the crowbar plus easily switch between the weapons. Also does anyone know how to show the HUD?
hit + multiple times.
apparently day one is the oldest public build [editline]1[/editline] merge bork
Awesome. looks like I need to update the title then
I posted about the Crowbar ages ago :(
What's the bind for "use" ? I can't seem to pull any switches or press any buttons. Or is it supposed to be like that?

looking around and found this picture.. worldcraft came on a seperate cd?
It's just too bad they didn't have the irish scientist until 1998, but i can deal with the mute stoned bad hair sci As for Worldcraft, it was a shareware map editor for Quake, Quake2 and Hexen II that could be registered (registering it grants the ability to create prefabs, and expert compile options). That CD looks like 1.6. There was also a Worldcraft Pro version advertised in 1999 (which also supported Half-Life), but I forget if that even released.
