Is it theoretically possible to replace sounds? I would love a mod that replaces the silence sound with the one from WC3. It's so much more menacing than the high-pitched "Silence!" that Dota has.

Yes. Dota 2 is a source game and like every other source game you can mod virtually every aspect of it

Use Dota 2 Slasher, it's a program that rips into the vpks or something and replaces music.

Instructions are that inside the files folder you put the proper directories for the files eg sound/filenamewhatever

the only difficult part is figuring out the file directories but you can just use GCFScape to browse through the vpks.

You need to run it every time it updates, though, since updates restore the vpks.

It's not working for me. Is there a more detailed tutorial? I have the file directory correct (replacing the Silence sound, so it's root/sound/weapons/silence.wav), but beyond that nothing's working. It also says "Success!" when I run it, so I don't know what's happening.

Is root one of the folders? as in (where ever the slasher is)files/root/sound/weapons/silence.wav?

Unless the item already uses a sound when you attack from stealth(which I'm 99% certain it doesn't) you can't

Yes, just get the old shop icons and place them in right directories. You might also need to add -override_vpk to dota launch parameters so dota loads your shop textures over vpk ones. (thats all just theory though, but i'm willing to test it if you'll find me some old shop icons)

I still don't see why people would want old icons.
Most of them are just unpolished version of the current ones, with a few exceptions like Vanguard or Shadow Blade.

or some way to pick and choose, I like some of the old ones, (old salve and clarity, for example) but I like some of the new ones as well

If that icon was edited slightly, it'd be leagues better than the current icon. I can barely see the actual hood right now in that image, but if it was highlighted somehow, it'd look badass. They changed it to green because it brings out the hood better and it was probably a two second change.
