Season pass is still worth it if you want the DLC ops fast.
Regular ops that are good are Rook, Doc, Ash, Thermite, Thatcher, Sledge, Bandit, Jager, off the top of my head.

Yeah bought season pass yesterday. They provided a good game with great maps and updates this year. They deserve every penny for it. Had 3 dlc operators unlocked with renown in whole year playtime. Which took me 73 hours.

The melee range is pathetically small, I don't even bother trying to knife or shield bash anymore.

essential ops imo are thermite, ash and thatcher for attackers and mute, rook and bandit. all other regular ops are great if played right but those are your essential ones that you want unlocked from the get-go as they are they most profound for helping your team

I'm going to add in that you are good whatever you unlock so long as you don't unlock Tachanka or Castle

Depends on how you like to play. Blackbeard, ashe thatcher Thermite are all good.
Defenders if you like roaming jager bandit if you like playing close to objective and know the maps decently well then you should get valkery.
Blackbeard is a must have because how stupid he can play and get away with it.

If it's Castle you unlocked then no big deal, but listen to your team for where they want the Castle-cades and prioritise windows over doors, a bad Castle-caded door could block your own team out of the objective.
Also just don't be that castle who traps his entire team inside the objective room within the first 5 seconds and you should be good.
If you chose Tachanka then god help you.

casual is so bad now
i get that it's casual and not super tryhard ranked but when i got the game during black ice most people were pretty chill and/or communicative. Now it's just like every other FPS.

Next DLC, Operation Ravenshield. That would be awesome if that would happen because they are still going to update rainbow six siege after this year.
The classic old maps like penthhouse, oil refinery, and villa are my favorite ones. Vegas casino map would be nice too as extra.

Fun fact: the teams were originally called Raven Shield and Rogue Spear instead of Blue/Orange the pre-Alpha. Back then they were trying to present the game as a sort of return to form for the series before they went full hero shooter.

You just kinda contradicted yourself. They don't look better because they're generic. Having generic looking characters in a game that's very focused on specific characters having very specific abilities is a giant no-no.

in the original way the game was made, there weren't specific characters and abilities.
i remember the classes being point man, assault, breacher and sniper
I think I would have liked classes we could customize heavily more than picking "heroes". It's kind of already there with the Recruits, but you can't do much with them. I'm hoping the hero fad in FPS games will slow down eventually.
agreed. one of the main selling points to rainbow six, especially in later iterations, was the ability to customize your operator and make them an extension to yourself. siege completely redacts that point and leaves customization to simple cosmetic items and scopes
i like how siege works with the operators but the base game itself is just... so badly done. the peekers advantage, off-key netcoding and hitboxes in general really make the game seem like an absolutely sloppy mess. a lot of kills are complete accidents and lucky shots and not really based on any particular player-based skillsets. it just boils down to who has more intel on where the enemy team is. it should be just be called ghosting: the game because that's really all every round boils down to. your loadout is pretty much meaningless if there's a camera watching your every movement
