Smooth out the leading edges on your boat with slopes, especially those that go underwater. Drag plays a massive part in your vehicle's top speed.
By adding very little to my destroyer besides smoothing out the leading faces, I got an extra 2m/s out of its top speed, up to an average speed of 12m/s.
Also, a thing that helps ship stability a lot is to line up the propellers and rudders with the ship's center of mass, you can see it by pressing P and searching for a green cross somewhere around the middle of the ship.
I remember finding this out and suddenly my ships didn't tip over so much(if at all) when turning which allowed for adding more speed and doing tighter turns without risking tipping over.
So Nick, the developer is trying to limit all faction campaign ships to 5,000 blocks in the future. For reference the vast majority of the Steel Striders ships are well over that limit. I'm working to try to A: Get more beam type blocks to reduce block count, and B: allow 10k as a reasonably compromise limit.

I took advice from the A-10 school of design philosophy and designed my ship around the gun. The gun is fixed although thats not nearly as bad as you'd think. The thing turns REALLY well and the gun is so low to the water that shells skim the surface and start skipping meaning it maintains accuracy at REALLY large ranges. Meanwhile it has two torpedo tubes for use against targets that are too maneuverable for the main gun to accurately hit.

Also note the massive counterweight under the boat
^I'm surprised that even floats, Kyle!
...So since earlier today I've improved on my original design:

Same catamaran design, but with a fixed, pivoting cannon on the deck...
Then, I went on to the campaign and managed to build this: a single hulled traditional ship with an AI deck gun; with all the internals tucked away, armoured on the inside. ...It still sucks and can't really take on much more than a Vanguard at the moment:

And finally, a speed-boat. It can travel stably at around 10 m/s:

I want to get into this and do the campaign in coop, but my friends are gay and find the game too hard.
anyone in europe up for this?

You can significantly improve the durability of your turrets by placing the turret axis block at the very bottom of your ship's hull. It also lets you build turrets that look flush with the hull, so you can stop those annoying ricochets on the turret's underside that send incoming enemy fire straight into your boats hull.

Check out the "Seaflayer" default design in the vehicle designer and you can see how it's done.
Also, check out this tutorial on to how to make extremely efficient engines. The updated version of that destroyer puts out something like 18,000 kilowatts of power.

oh wow... that's incredibly useful and it'll also help with center of mass going lower.. how did I not think of this.
Oh man, learning this game is so confusing. I've been messing around in the vehicle designer, but I can't get any of my boats to stay afloat without support buoy-things off the sides

What are you building them out of? A pure wood boat should basically float no matter what you do to them.
If it's a metal boat, leave empty chambers inside and put in air/buoyancy pumps (under the Water category) in it. They're more buoyant than wood, but you'll lose buoyancy if the chambers are breached below the water line.
If your boats are rocking back and forth, build a keel.

You want your center of mass below the water line and in-line with your engines. Build an extension below the bottom of your hull and place lead blocks on it to weigh it down.
Bought the game on that bundle for 5 quid cause it looks fun. Hopped into campaign, confused as fuck, gave up but told myself I'd get back to it later. Played a few scenarios, had a blast, really want to keep playing cause I'd love to build an awesome "fuck-everyone-up" ship.
I just find building in this game tough.
How do you resource gather, btw? Drill into enemy ships, win battles or?

In the campaign, there are circular zones where oil and resource extractors work, indicated on the map and in first person view. You start in one such zone, and can take over enemy resource zones.
Move a ship or fortress into one of those zones and they'll gather resources if they have resource extractors. There are also Crystal trays that refine crystals.
You also get resources and XP for destroying enemy blocks.
I really want to make cool planes in this game but everything I make consistently tries to fly into space with AI control, no matter what I do to my design.

Are these azi. turrets with elevator barrels?
[editline]16th August 2015[/editline]
Just looked at them again, nevermind, of course they are!
Oops, I built a wooden warship backwards. So my propellers refuse to work. Any way to readjust what is considered the "front" of my vehicle? I don't wanna scrap this and start over from the beginning...

It's actually a normal turret. :v:
The design of the turret restricts it from aiming up or down, so it doesn't really matter what type of turret base I use.

Save it, then in the load menu hit the "Rotate 90 degrees" button (top right corner) twice. You'll probably have to spin your control block around but it should work after that.
Thanks, I appreciate the help. Will give it a go. Oddly enough, my central propeller started working even though I'm not entirely sure what I did. Will flip now and delete it if it gets confused again (the propeller).

Have you configured the Aerial AI card by pressing it with Q? The default settings can make it fly pretty stupidly.
Also, if your center of mass isn't aligned with the main propulsion, the AI can't properly handle it.

If you press Q on a propeller or jet, you can invert the controls, or at least for when it's a turning prop/jet.
I'm in the Campaign and I can't see the rotate command when I load it in.

The button only shows up when you still have it selected in the Load Constructible menu. You can't rotate it when it is spawned. :eng101:

Also, adding onto my previous point about turrets, cannons have magikarp power. They start out pretty shitty, but on larger boats they turn into rapid fire babykiller 9000 cannons.
On small craft and aircraft, I recommend sticking to missile launchers. A missile launcher only really takes up the space amount of space as a cannon barrel, but hits harder than babby cannons. The DWG Coyote can be pretty dangerous despite its small size because it has a quad missile turret.
I've got this weird bug where I can't place items on about 2 blocks of my ship. I tried deleting and replacing, but the cursor just won't let me place items on top of it. Any fix for this?

I don't know exactly what causes it, but you can get around it by switching to keyboard based building with F3, then using WASD to move the cursor into the space and placing the block.
REMEMBER!!
ALWAYS USE PRECISION TURRETS WITH MOTORIZED/ELEVATION BARRELS!
Normal/azimuth180 turrets have major stability problems as you start making bigger weapons. Additionally, precision turrets can be used to make flush weapons.
I keep forgetting how to make engines and when I made a real cool lookin' ironclad lookalike I couldn't fit an engine in there :disgust:
I keep forgetting how to make engines and when I made a real cool lookin' ironclad lookalike I couldn't fit an engine in there :disgust:
I usually make the engine first, then build the ship around it to get around that issue. :v:
On my boat destroyer (this), I first built the gun, then the engine, then built the hull around it.
Is that shielding surrounding your ship, or is it a block type? Cause it looks holographic or something, like a shield.

Shields.

Is there a shortcut to build a line of blocks, or do I have to build them all one-by-one?
Is there a shortcut to build a line of blocks, or do I have to build them all one-by-one?
One by one. You can however kinda get it by using an autoclicker and the keyboard based build mode.
