I had an AI ship that refused to turn around, and when I checked on it an hour later it was in the middle of a desert.
I had an Onyx Watch fleet try to chase my killsat over a mountain range. When I engaged in the battle, the OW ships spawned 200 meters in the air, fell, smashed into the ground and blew up their ammo caches.
Why is my boat going in reverse to get to it's destinations??? Everything is facing the right way, I don't know whats causing it to do that.

It seems to be working now.... Weird.

They tend to just reverse constantly randomly. I haven't figured out how to prevent them doing that without completely disabling reverse through the naval chip.
I can't remember ever seeing a boat going into reverse for a genuine reason, so I just disable it to stop the AI from trying to do something stupid like reverse into combat.

Also, fuck the Twin Guards. Almost all of their ships mount a little repair drone, have repair tentacles on the main body, and have shields. I just saw four TG ships dogpile onto each other, creating an unkillable pile of shields. It couldn't seriously damage either of my ships, but christ. Maybe I should build a few White Flayers ships just to ram the bastards.
It seems like whenever I try to use a spin block now it spazzes out like a motherfucker. (think Gmod) Is there a reason?
Standard spin and turret blocks don't handle heavy weights too well. Replace it with a Precision Spinner.
Any moving blocks you should use the precision version.
After starting a new campaign save, I built a cheap little missile boat, and I've been winning every battle so far with just this one boat.
Missiles are completely overpowered until you get to the meatier factions. At that point, you want either large APHE cannons or lasers, depending on who you're fighting. Torpedoes also work great against enemies that can destroy missiles. Torpedoes are in fact one of the most powerful weapons vs ships in the game, since you cannot deflect, defeat, or destroy them. The only things safe from torpedoes are aircraft and fast ships.

I need to work on miniaturizing my turrets but so far it works REALLY well.
4 Large APHE cannons and 6 torpedo launchers. I'm probably going to add some AA missiles and some ASW mines later
I still need to learn how to build proper boats and ships in this game, I can barely even build a wooden boat, I just don't understand how engines and shit work in this.

Ehehe, my new mission boat.
What'd be awesome is if you could make a really big boat with a bunch of little boats packed with explosives.
Who needs torpedoes when you could have a little guided boat that packs 3 times the punch?
So this is going to be a risky question in a game's megathread: I appreciate the complexity of this game, compared to SE it's actually super nice, but is the game always going to be this ugly?

It used to be uglier than it is now :v:.
The only guy working on this game sucks at graphics stuff, but he's now got someone to do that for him(or he's learning it himself I dunno) so stuff has been getting upgraded.

I really don't like how the basic wood block looks or how it has that tongue-in-groove thing going on.

That's super frustrating because it seems to be super arbitrary when it does/doesn't do that
It's really unfortunate because I'd really like some slick wood decking on my battleships.

In other news, I'm trying to build a paddle-wheel battleship.

Theres an option to toggle wood from that weird groove thing to a regular block.

Woah wait what.
Since when has that been in the game?
Oh my god what.

Yes, hit F10.
It's fun watching how your ships evolve as you learn the game and start to understand how to build properly.
I started with dicking around in the vehicle designer; this was my first successful design (Earlier version on the right, latest variant on the left. I went from having a shitty deck gun to having a slightly less-shitty stationary deck gun):
[thumb]http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/422564128555161948/74F68AB6A5893C46D7E28D5EE9627A34A7DC339C/[/thumb]
Then, I actually went ahead and played the campaign, so I designed a ship within those constraints: (Early version on the right, later on the left. This also served as a testbed for learning to use missiles -- which is the ship on the very left. That design lead to...)

This one; the missile garbage-barge! Watch how it evolves into an... armoured garbage-barge. With a turret, eventually. (I've been using this as my command ship in the campaign):

...So then, with everything spawned, I set them upon an Onyx Bulwark...... and my game crashed.

And a few one-offs... I have my air-ship armed with 2 long range torpedos, 5 IR missile silos and 8 (4 on each broadside) "Simple Large Cannons" (mostly for that air-pirate look). This comes in handy for cruising around the map and taking resource points.

And an attempt at making a small, cheap, disposable, simple & fast drone ship for filling out my fleet in the campaign. It's actually what the airship above is based on. 5 IR missiles and a pretty plain deck gun in the back for harassment.

And lastly, a WIP of our command ship that my buddy and I are working on to finish and build in our campaign:

It actually has a full interior with rooms, bulkheads -- even silly cabins with chairs, tables and "beds" and such. The shell is designed with redundancy in mind -- the magazine is twice armoured and honeycombed in the center of the hull and such. Everything is compartmentalized.
And a shot of the engine room:

Currently smacking the shit out of the DWG with this thing

Ugly as sin, but flies stably (until you decide you want to change direction) and has a big-ass cannon and loads of missiles. Though it seems generally the missiles do most of the work.
[editline]22nd August 2015[/editline]
Never been good at making boats that can float stably, let alone survive :v:
Is the cannon on a turret? Planes rarely ever fly within the firing angle of a fixed gun, even if the gun has a motorized barrel.
I put a small cannon on my modified XF04 and only uses the cannon in the initial strafing run, as subsequent strafing runs are too unstable for it to get a bead on the enemy.
No matter how hard I try I always tend to oversize my guns to my hull.
I can spend 3 hours designing a very stable, armoured hull with multiple compartments and the moment I add turrets to it magically turns into a slow, unstable bouncing funcastle.
How do people even keep full-metal hulls afloat? I'm using fully hollow hulls with compartments and air pumps and as soon as something is added on top it always sinks :(

I usually try to ensure that within the hull there is a roughly 50-50 split between occupied space (engines and shit) and buoyancy chambers.

This ship also has a thin layer of wood along the outer edge of the bottom of the hull (the purple area), which has a surprising effect on buoyancy. The lower blue stripe is a separate buoyancy chamber that runs across the entire bottom of the ship 1 block tall, divided into three separate chambers, the middle of which also has my ammo cache.
IIRC, the hull is all standard metal bar the top deck, which is mostly light alloy.

If you can afford the resources, lightweight alloy floats just as well as wood but has more health and better armour. Does tend to conduct EMP strikes like regular metal tho, which wood doesn't do.

Might consider making an AC-130 equivalent so I can have the AI batter stuff with cannon turrets while I circle it, and missiles and lasers for air-to-air.
Can you only have one dock/tractor beam per fortress? Me and my buddy are playing on a coop thing but I can't spawn a tractor mean to build a ship there, and all my prebuilts are too expensive.
(Oh I just couldn't afford it)
Hmm... I'm making a dual-barreled turret -- I've figured out that you need to keep the six-way connectors isolated from each side or it won't work -- but now, despite having an elevation of 27 degrees, my barrels refuse to point up more than 3 or 4 degrees.
I have it flush with my deck on an Anzi-turret. What am I doing wrong? The barrels are two blocks above my deck, too, and don't have any obstruction. Why won't they elevate?

[del]Make sure there are no obstructions in front of the firing piece itself, if you have any blocks around any of the barrel pieces it wont be able to elevate in those directions.[/del]
