So I got a question for ya'll
Do I need a big rig to run this?
decent rig will do
You need THIS rig:

10/10 you win
Is there some sort of rev limiter? I'm confused by how the engine behaves. The revs climb up to a point and halt abruptly but it isn't even red lining.
How do I diesel.
I can't get any truck to go over 90, is this because I'm using automatic?
I can't get any truck to go over 90, is this because I'm using automatic?
No its because speed limiter. There are mods that remove it.

Unless I'm mistaken Diesel aren't built to sit on red-lines.
Stick in green for max torque. Going to redline, or even out of green it is not worth it. Don't be afraid to doubleshift either.

Okay. It works like this:
First of all, all Diesel engines are rev-limited. It is done through the injection system.
With car engines, the problem is mostly that, since the diesel/air mix ignites itself without the use of a spark plug, you cannot advance ignition timing, which you'd have to do at higher revs to get an optimal power output. So diesel engines are usually designed with a longer stroke (pistons move farther up and down) and smaller bore (smaller pistons) than petrol engines, so that they produce a higher torque at lower rpms.
This last part is especially true for truck engines. As you will have noticed, they won't rev higher than some 2500rpm. Why? [del]The reason is that there is a limit to how fast a piston can travel up and down, which is around 30 meters per second. Above that, you get lubrication problems. Now, truck engines have an extremely long stroke, so the pistons have to travel a much larger distance per revolution than in a regular petrol engine. Hence, the 30m/s limit is reached already in low rpm's.[/del] It seems I was wrong on that last part. The bore/stroke ratio is about the same for truck diesels as for car diesels.
The actual reason is that because of the huge displacement of truck engines (up to around 16 litres or 1000cui), the pistons are just too heavy to move up and down any faster. Inertia will eat up too much power if you rev them any higher, and you'd also put too much stress on the bearings.
Now why will your engine stop revving in the yellow?
I think it's for economy reasons. Above 2000rpm, the engine will probably hardly produce any additional power but will consume much more diesel. If you look at power output diagrams for any engine, you'll see that they actually start to lose power at a certain rpm count.
Then why is there a red area if I can't rev it up that far anyway?
You'll often be using downshifts to brake with the engine when going downhill, so the red line will show you how far you can allow it to rev up when coasting.
"DRIVER <insert name here> COULDN'T FIND ANY JOB SO HE HAD TO DRIVE ACROSS EUROPE A FEW DOZEN TIMES AND SPENT ALL THE COMPANY'S MONEY DOING SO"
Am I the only one getting this with employees? My driver is making around €0.35/km and I'm making €30/km or something, yet my driver has actually driven more than me despite me doing 130 km/h at every possible opportunity.
Also, how does the truck driver hiring system work? I'm only seeing a couple of 1.7 rated drivers, rest are 0.8, when will I be able to hire better drivers?

It has been talked about this a couple of pages back.
That message appears when a driver tries to go back from a job to the city where their garage is, when there's none they go back anyway, thus wasting money on petrol and maintenance.
At first they earn little, but as they progress they keep getting more and more money, as of now my oldest workers are averaging about 3000 moneys per job. So just give them time, a lot of time.
As far (very little) as I understand the hiring system assigns workers to a recruiting center, so as you discover more and more recruiting centers you will be seeing better workers. The best I have seen so far from about 50% of them discovered is a 3.2 rating, and even then when they started they started slow. And I have always given them trucks since their day 1.
And only four from the six I have hired had a yellow rating, the other two had red rating, and they are slowly getting better at it.
TLDR: Give them time and they will get better, but remember it's a sim as they will take time, a lot of time.
Having issues with only being able to play the game for a few minutes at a time (not even 5 minutes) and the game goes to black screen. I have to downshift and brake and stop as fast as I can without being able to see anything because I will run off the road and crash if I don't.
Anybody know how to fix this? I'm running a GTX 660 with 310.90 drivers (latest available).
I'm wondering if it has to do with rain, because I've been in rain all 3 times it has happened now (same delivery). Doing the first couple deliveries under clear skies, I never experienced this.

Wasn't there a option to disable rain in the options. If I'm correct try turning the rain completely off and see what happens if it keeps black screening without rain then it might be the game or your drivers, although I suppose the same could be same for with rain too. Either way, try turning the rain off and giving it another shot, see how it goes.
Good news everybody!
At last, we are releasing a new update to ETS2! Lots of fixes and improvements, and a new patch application which should hopefully make the updating procedure a lot smoother.
It may be a good idea for you to back-up your player profile (look for it in Documents > Euro Truck Simulator 2), especially if you are using mods which may have compatibility problems with this update. This way you would have a fall-back option to temporarily revert to a previous version in case of problems.
Steam edition of the game will be updated later today, please have patience with us, this patch is applicable to all retail as well as digital editions of the game except for the Steam build.
Find the update here.
What's new in this update:
official licenses from Iveco and Volvo
ability to change the company name, logo or preferred brand
retarder (automatic or manual)
per-profile mod selection (can be overridden using -force_mods command line parameter)
support local currencies of each country in the game
gearbox accessory selection
new online radio stations (now up to 190 stations)
physics takes into account different weights for trailers and cargos
Renault Premium upgrades
Renault Magnum side-skirts are now an optional upgrade
hired driver log
hired drivers more likely to find suitable cargo on the way back
re-hired driver issue fixed
ferry fee is not charged to player for quick jobs
UK distances in GPS fixed
fixed memory leak when playing mp3 files using radio
improved handling of corrupted save files
improved resiliency to some types of corruptions caused by mod removal
fixed cabin blur during rain/
over 200 map changes and fixes
several German roads thoroughly tweaked and prettyfied
bump causing damage on German A3 fixed
powerline columns in the middle of the road removed
gas station in Bremen

About time! That fucking bump have made me lose lots and lots of money.
Looks like a good update.
And it's downloading on Steam.

Sorry if this was asked already, but if you bought the game before the steam release, is there a way to get a steam key?

Your retail key works on steam.
Sweet, thanks
I wonder if this will fix that bug I had where playing MP3's would cause a freeze permanently. Anyone else ever have that? Yet streaming always works.

Yeah the patch fixes that.
Anyone know where in the registry the ETS2 key is kept? Can't find my box or manual for the game
Can someone tell me what is "automatic retarder" in the options?
Can someone tell me what is "automatic retarder" in the options?
How do I google...
First result on google,
"A retarder is a device used to augment or replace some of the functions of primary friction-based braking systems, usually on heavy vehicles."
Can someone tell me what is "automatic retarder" in the options?
A retarder is a system put in place to slow down your truck easier, it won't fully stop a moving truck but it will help until the brakes can kick in, it helps a lot with things like inclines to keep a truck from just flying down a hill.

So in other words this should help stop from just accelerating mindlessly to 105 km/h even with the speed limiter?
