I still feel like VA-11 ended way too early.
I thought the game was just beginning by the time it was over. That being said, it definitely was interesting.
And Sei is the best character by far.
I do agree. As a visual novel, there's a lot of uncovered grounds, like what does happen after the closure [sp]Except the vacations[/sp], or what's up with Dana (Or even who is Gillian really?)
While it is fine to leave some characters with a degree of mysticism (to make sequels/side stories etc), it can also leave the audience more than annoyed when they pay for something and get very little resolution.
But then again, VA-11 Hall-A is a game where you enter a ride for a short stride, meeting a few people in just a single month and seeing how much you learn about them. You are part of a side story, and you are a fairly normal person. Really, the whole bank ordeal and the resolution of Jill's [sp]guilt over her girlfriend[/sp] is really the important part of what happened in December. If we played in January, there would be no telling if it was going to be more interesting than that last December, with Jill and certain characters having found resolutions or peace (Depending on the endings you reach).
In a sense, the fact VA-11 finished early is a good thing. It leaves you wanting more, and it prevents the game from getting very old (Can you imagine having to serve drinks for another 20 days?) Any new jobs is more exciting at first when you're new to it, but after a certain while it often loses its shine. In papers please, they prevented things from getting old by increasing the amount of things you had to check, increasing the ways people can trick you, meaning that almost every two days, a new mechanics or special event occured, which meant something new among the things that you get used to. Near the end of the game, the stuff you are used to is really more dangerous than the new papers, since you are often confident with the basics you believe you know by heart.
Compare that to VA-11, where you 90% of the time fill direct order which has no penalty, no stress factor and you cannot fail unless you really pay no attention, the bartending minigame gets stale fast. Of course, the good endings being hidden behind correct "Drink" choices is neat, but altogether, at some point you'd prefer if people kept talking and you didn't have to make two large beers between discussions. Especially in consecutive playthroughs.
December 25th has some great character moments, so I'd try to stick around until that. If you're not into the game by the end of Chapter 2, I'd say that's a safe point to stop.
Ah thanks, just got to Chapter 3, I wonder how long the game's got left...
I suppose I should take the game slow. Been struggling to push the game forward since sometimes the characters got a little too long-winded while doing little to drive the conversation topic forward and it feels really, REALLY boring; I still do read them because I didn't want to miss any important detail... arghh... the bartender action and breaks doesn't do enough to freshen up the cycle.
I'll keep playing, because I am a little interested as to where it is heading.
Are all Visual Novel games like this? And this is one of the better ones out there? I only got this game because it got good rep while I was browsing Steam queue.

Most visual novels don't have 'gameplay' elements.

So uh... just a boatload of text, like a real novel? No dating minigame? No meaningful dialogue choices?? Nothing?
So uh... just a boatload of text, like a real novel? No dating minigame? No meaningful dialogue choices?? Nothing?
Oops I meant like proper gameplay. Most have dialogue choices (Some don't) sure, and some also have other minigames in it like VA-11 Hall-A.
Is this game like Papers, Please? Tempted to get it.

it's a novel, but you get to look at pretty pictures while the text scrolls
on a more related note,
I want to marry Julianne!!

it's ok i was just quoting the /dangeru/
stella is best girl because CAT DRILL
DRILL CAT'S CAT DRILLS
most pattable. anyway, all the girls are amazing. really high tier.
Huh, so I accidentally gave Stella a small [sp]Brandtini[/sp] instead of a big [sp]Brandtini[/sp] like she asked, and [sp]she responded negatively to it[/sp] but it still didn't count as a Mistake at the end of the day.
Odd.

It's more of a visual novel with the whole bartending mechanic being used to handle dialogue choices.
[editline]26th June 2016[/editline]
I actually like Dana the best.
Any favorite quotes from the game?
Mine is probably [sp]"Why AREN'T you carrying a bucket of spicy chicken wings?"[/sp] or [sp]"I have too many pics of my imouto there and I don't want their eyes soiled."[/sp]
Probably Jill [sp]getting shitfaced and telling Dana about "stupid meat rods"[/sp] or [sp]Jill supposedly knowing French and saying something random along the lines of "my hovercraft has eels in it"[/sp]
Also Dorothy [sp]getting aroused by Alma's hacking explanation and wanting to be "hacked" herself[/sp]
Got this game on a whim, it is absolutely straight fire. No feeling better than stumbling on that little hidden gem.
Day 4 - [sp]Twitch.TV has changed a lot from 2016...[/sp]
Does anybody know the recipe for the secret Drink?
Does anybody know the recipe for the secret Drink?
I posted it on the first page. Here it is again: [sp]1 1 2 3 5. No rocks and no aged, mixed.[/sp]
Well I beat it.
I got the [sp]'Evicted' ending, where you move in with Alma. I was a whole 2k away from being able to pay the rent. The scenes before the ending with Gaby legit made me tear up.[/sp] That shit is just too real.
[sp]I have this strange and upsetting sensation that Lenore is a person who actually died, like someone I'll never get to know because she's dead. I really want to experience her presence as a character, to see firsthand who Jill loved. I've never felt like this about a character who died before the story begins, where I genuinely feel like I missed out on a getting to know a worthwhile character.[/sp]
The story just has that much of an impact on me.
I feel like I should go into the game blind.
The spoilers in this thread are too enticing hnnggg

Do it, it's good game if on the short side.
It has more character development then a lot of bigger games.

Oh man, my artwork got retweeted by Sukeban Games.
Here it is, if anyone was wondering:

I really do wish I was better, though. I'm in one of those "beat myself up for not being better" moods.

Besides line weight there's not much that's "lacking", maybe a different perspective could help but otherwise most elements are quite in order.

I really appreciate that. And yeah my lines need work. I do like to think my shading has improved incredibly since just merely 9 months ago though.

A very large improvement over an arguably short time in the grand scheme of things I would say. I've seen people take years to actually nail down the ins and outs of line work some to this day do not grasp it fully despite being industry giants. Some are capable of forgoing them completely but it depends on style.
If possible try and find images of stuff like conceptual work for animated shows and especially Disney's concept artwork they're a goldmine for seeing good lines. Obviously it's entirely down to you how to dictate the lines but the most common rules still apply I.E thicker for stronger forms/emphasis and thinner for details or touch ups. But that's enough off-topic from me.
This game captured my heart immediately, something really special about it that I can't quite pinpoint (but the abundance of badass girls certainly helps).
I made some super simple avatars from artwork of Jill (to try to decide which I liked best) so here you are if anybody wants one:

Can remove the black border on demand if you'd like.
a gif of jill playing on her tablet at home would be tops
Got the good ending. Love this game and I'm probably going to 100% the achievements. Haven't been sucked into a VN like this in a while. I keep itching to play it away from my PC, so I might double-dip for the future Vita/iOS version.
Pro tip, for those who don't know: You can use the QWERT keys to put ingredients into the mixer instead of having to drag them in every time.
Just finished my first playthrough, 12 hours. Probably took that long because I narrated everything for a friend of mine (bar some of the Augmented Eye, Danger/u/ articles and *Kira* Miki blog posts).
Regarding the ending, [sp]I do feel like it was a bit...out of nowhere. But really heartwarming.[/sp] I really hope the devs make more games in the same universe with similar characters because I think they have something wonderful here. I got the ending where [sp]Jill is evicted and has to move in with Alma, "cozy hell" indeed[/sp].
I will definitely be 100%ing this game.
