Hey, a TF2er here. I've seen some videos of Overwatch, but haven't yet seen a character that really suits me, even though there are nearly two dozen classes.
In terms of gameplay, I am generally looking for:
-a character that is a stealthy glass cannon, similar to the TF2 Spy or NS2 Skulk, designed around sneaking and getting up close at the cost of having low HP, indifferent about mobility level
-is mostly designed around being a melee berserker, I prefer close quarter combat to using ranged weapons
-something that avoids slowdown debuffs if any are available, as I really don't like the concept of debuffs
-a low amount of turrets, if present, or some ability that makes them really effective against turrets (preferably close to none, I'd rather fight players than AI)
Is this game right for me, and if so, which class would best suit my preferences?

Sorry to say, but the closest you are going to get to spy is Reaper. And maining only one hero in this game is a bad idea.
The Duke: play everyone, literally everyone, you'll probably find you enjoy nearly every hero.
ever since I played hanzo I had this urge to adopt a pseudo-bushido lifestyle of discipline and honor
it's actually great, now I lift and run when I'm supposed to and I have found purpose in its structure
maybe next I should enter the iris and find self actualization :v:
Except I wasn't. Almost every point in the game has a position where you can stay on the objective while still avoiding D'Va's ult.
just keep saying "no you didn't get me I know better and can just walk behind cover", but a good DVa can time the boost so the thing drops out of the sky just as it pops. What now? You and several teammates are forced to scramble and figure out where the mech is coming from/where it's going to land, then hiding in the sweet spot around the cart. Have fun if the mech lands behind the payload and the 'hiding' spot is exposed to the defending team's fire. As a bonus, cramming into one little blindspot makes you a sweet treat for junkrat and pharah, and easy mowing for plenty of weapons
You don't even have to do a boost bomb to clear a capture point, those are all open space. There's a few with a random car parked into the capture point, but I know one on king's row doesn't actually shield you from the blast (which is likely a bug)

Genji might be your thing.

I think you got a wrong kind of thinking going on. The whole point in overwatch (as far as i understood in beta) is to learn as many heros as possible and change depending on situation, not focus on "maining" one.

like others suggested, reaper might be the way to go. Nobody will ever have stealth, but reaper can teleport long distances to any walkable surface, so it gets you behind enemy lines and up into high places to flank snipers and the like. Also as mentioned above, genji can do the melee thing for his ultimate attack but otherwise throws shurikens. The only melee focused character is Reinhardt with his hammer, but he's a huge heavy tank. He hits hard and does a long distance rocket charge thing so maybe you'll have fun playing that offensively

- There isn't really a 1:1 spy class. There are some exceptional at flanking though, like Genji.
- Reinhart.png
- Mei is the only class that causes slowdown. Out of 21.
- There are only 2 turrets in the game. One is a player (Bastion), the other is pretty not-durable (Trobljasofjone). In TF2 terms, the turret-building class can only build a Level 2 sentry max, his ultimate ability temporarily makes it a Level 3.

Honestly, try all classes and see what you like the most. Most characters aren't entirely one-sided. As a former huge TF2 player, I'm sure you'll love it as well.

Also Symmetra's sentry turrets.
I should clarify, I play every class in TF2, but in shooter gameplay in general, I still have a strong preference for close quarter combat and set up my characters in FPSes to suit that when possible. I would not be against playing multiple/all classes, but it seems partially moot if I don't find one that I favor above the others if I was to invest a lot of time into the game. (Hence why I listed my preferences)

Oh right, I always forget about those. They have 5HP though and... cause slow-down. :v:

It's not hard to figure out where the mech is when there's a big flashing red warning symbol pointing at it when it pops the ult. As for having good teammates to help, that makes pretty much everything useful doesn't it?
The point is, D'Va's ult is highly situational and very rarely used well. To properly make use of it as an area denial tool, you need favourable map design, good positioning and timing of it, and coordinated teammates who can take advantage of it. Compare to something like Hanzo's ult, where you just point it at the objective and the enemy team has two choices: Get out of the way or die.

Most of the engagements in Overwatch are fought on close-medium range, with the only major exception being Widowmaker.

D.va's ultimate is far better at clearing a point than Hanzo's is. D.va shoots hers off, everyone runs and hides. Hanzo shoots his off, everyone steps 2 inches to the left. :v:

hanzo's was really weird with its size. At times it seemed it was far slimmer than the dragon models flying through the level, other times I was nowhere near it and my health was draining fast

Hitboxes might be the problem. I think it is the same reason in TF2 how people are able to backstab people in the face.
