I feel like Edmund ( and potentially some people at Nicalis as well, ofc ) want to make Isaac this "Tough as Nails" rogue-like where you play as hard characters and are constantly pitted up against insanely difficult rooms and enemies and bosses at early points in the game, and that becoming truly powerful is "less fun" in comparison
Honestly, whenever I see this phrase in a game's description on Steam, it's kind of a red flag. It was somewhat relevant in the mid to late 00s as this response from indie developers to the idea that "modern games are too easy" but lately it's become a sign of laziness. Any developer can make a game hard, but people really want a more interesting challenge that balances difficulty at a fun level. It reminds me of those "kaizo mario 64" videos I saw on retsupurae a few years ago, where the modder just copy/pasted chain chomps and fire everywhere. That's harder, sure, but in a really sloppy way.
It's just different. I've played so many hours in afterbirth on hard that I'm completely used to the nerfed items and higher difficulty. Even keeper doesn't feel so bad to play after getting 1001%.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/570660/ Store page has gone up for Afterbirth+
I don't remember if we've seen what Apollyon looks like prior to this but there he is.
Wish they would stop marking it with "multiplayer" and "co-op" when it's only Local mutiplayer and co-op.
Place your bets people Afterbirth was rushed to make its Halloween release date and took likes a week or two to finally get the rest of its contents and problems sorted out, and had a bunch of significant stuff cut out/dialed back. Afterbirth+ however has skipped going for a special release date, hopefully meaning it's actually ready to play. Will its launch be as big a mess as afterbirth was??? I'm gonna be optimistic for once and say they learned and this launch will go much smoother
Don't forget the unbalanced difficulty curve. Burning Basement is stupid sometimes. Treasure rooms with the items blocked by spikes, why? Double Key rooms literally filled with shit? For what purpose.
It really feels like they designed levels and went back to them after going "NO THERE NEEDS TO BE A THING TO FUCK OVER THE PLAYER"
It really feels like they designed levels and went back to them after going "NO THERE NEEDS TO BE A THING TO FUCK OVER THE PLAYER"
There's literally a basement floor small room with four or five giant troll bombs and a single black fly at the back to prevent the player from exiting right away. It's shit like that which makes me think the devs don't really understand the whole permadeath aspect of the game. Hell, the red lump enemies on the womb used to attack the player by literally just teleporting under you, and it was about a month before the devs changed it lol. I think they really just don't get that dying from something that isn't your fault isn't gonna give the player a laugh, but just piss then off
At least we have the stain to remember how annoying those lumps were.
The bestiary doesn't seem to have any little bits of flavour text. :why:

I wish I could love it, but there is just so much shit that shouldn't be there
When does the game actually launch? I thought he had said something about there being a discount for prepurchases.
So in Antibirth I found the shop as the last room of a floor, but in it I bought the map so that doesn't happen again. The two floors after that? Curse of the lost. :surrender:
Not like launch smoothness matters this time. Unless they timegate the mod tools everything they didn't bother with can just be modded in.
Really appreciate how they added missing hud as an option this time around, though I hope someone makes a mod that changes the icons to the Antibirth ones instead.
Gahhh hurry up and unlock
Gahhh hurry up and unlock
Gahhh hurry up and unlock
When does the game actually launch? I thought he had said something about there being a discount for prepurchases.
Yeah strange that it has no info or anything about this.
I wouldn't be surprised if they timegate the mod tools for a week, just so stuff can be "discovered" naturally.
When does the game actually launch? I thought he had said something about there being a discount for prepurchases.
I think there's an early adopter discount as opposed to a pre-order discount.
I wouldn't be surprised if they timegate the mod tools for a week, just so stuff can be "discovered" naturally.
Oh god I hadn't thought of that. Please don't be right.
I wouldn't be surprised if they timegate the mod tools for a week, just so stuff can be "discovered" naturally.
They didn't time gate anything. 52:27 and he talks about it for like 5 minutes. Like I understand the hate of bullshit rooms and bug fixes in DLC only but this one is just a rumor and that's not fair at all.
I genuinely can't decide whether or not Time Gating is worse than literally not playtesting the game.

For Apollyon to be unlocked a player must sacrifice their child. Yeah, now you'll all look back fondly on the greed machine.
I didn't say they did, either.
Why wouldn't you be surprised then?
Why wouldn't you be surprised then?
General pessimism about Afterbirth+, I guess.
General pessimism about Afterbirth+, I guess.
Not really. It's just, y'know, they obviously do want to keep things secret - the readme.txt in the packed resources folder is testament to that - not releasing the mod tools at launch for a day or two is probably fair. If anything I'm really hopeful for some good additions to Greed mode. [editline]3rd January 2017[/editline] If you want, you can take it as general pessimism in general, not about Afterbirth+ in particular.
