Played Origins at EGX in Birmingham at the weekend, found it really fun! The framerate was absolutely garbage however on Xbone X (think it was the X). The movement and climbing all felt much better and the combat had an actual sense of danger, an armoured guard pretty much mauled me even with plentiful dodging, had to run into the water and hide, haven't had to do that in an AC game in years!
I assumed they had a big DLC planned for Unity that would deal with that. There's just too much between the two characters, and there would be no better opportunity. Unfortunately, I think that after the release, Unity received such bad press that Ubisoft decided to cancel any planned DLC in development and move on to Syndicate. It's a shame, Dead Kings did a lot to rectify some of the main game's biggest problems. [editline]26th September 2017[/editline] Unity released in November 2014, Dead Kings in January 2015. They cancelled the Season Pass purchases pretty quickly, before Dead Kings was released. There must have been more planned. I'd love to know what exactly.
If that is the case, then I really hope the expand on it, like I mentioned through time skips in Origins, or expanded media. I hope they are able to find some way to expand on characters like Arno, Shay, and the Fryes if they are unable to find a place in another game.

Ironically, fan-fictions tend to counter that by making bad characters interesting again :v:
I love the concept of the AC series but really still can't get over the entire animus sub-plot they force in every game. I really just want it to be a solid game set in unique time periods.
Reminder that this week's Midweek Madness on Steam is about all the Assassin's Creed games. They are pretty cheap, so go for it

Speaking of which, do you guys know of any """Assassin's Creed-likes""", aside from The Saboteur? It's the only one I know but I'd love to play more.
I love the concept of the AC series but really still can't get over the entire animus sub-plot they force in every game. I really just want it to be a solid game set in unique time periods.
I think the problem with the modern day plot, is that after [sp]killing off Desmond[/sp], they are not really sure what to do with it. Even though the modern plot is not much of a draw to the series, it is where the main plot is. The past elements are personal stories of the player character and their run-ins with Pieces of Eden and the Assassin Templar War; The modern plot reflects how they use the information of the past to affect the future (for Desmond, it was also to discover his lineage and accept his destiny as an Assassin). After AC III, they have made baby steps in furthering the overall plot of the series. Unity and Rogue are probably the worst offenders, because the modern plot is inconsequential to the rest of the series aside from introducing a few characters and expanding the mythology through tidbits. I believe what they need is a new modern day protagonist to refocus the plot. As fascinating as the various timelines are, I don't think the modern plot should be scrapped altogether, but it needs to give the audience a reason to care. Some of the anonymous player characters of the modern day, like that in Rogue should become a character because he is [sp]now a part of the Templar Inner Circle with Otso Berg[/sp]. Additionally, after Syndicate has hinted at [sp]resurrecting a body containing pretty much full First Civ DNA and Juno planning to hijack it[/sp], I believe there is potential to focus on a new character coming up and using the animus to find a way to stop [sp]Juno[/sp] and Abstergo.
So which one of the new AC game's worth getting for the sale prices? Looking at games after AC4.
I'd say, not Unity. Syndicate is still expensive but it's pretty good. If you like the setting, go for it. And I'd say Rogue is worth it at this price, but only if you want more like AC4 and you don't mind a forgettable story.
Unity can be largely avoided unless you really like the French Revolution setting and are interested in the personal story of Arno. It is probably the most self-contained AC game. Just about everything it offers gameplay-wise (aside from some great customization) is improved upon in Syndicate. Rogue offers much of the same as Black Flag except in a new setting and its nice to play as a Templar and get more Haytham Kenway.
Assassin's Creed Origins - Discovery Tour Shows a Different Side of Egypt Already posted in SH, but goddamn this is such a great idea. I hope it also means they're developing the game to make it as close to reality as possible. There have been a lot of mistakes and anachronisms in previous games (mostly minor, but not always). Makes me sad to remember that there isn't even a database in AC1. It really could have used one with all the "unnamed" monuments you come across.
Went and bought both Unity and Syndicate. Cost me only like 25€ so ye, why not.
I'm replaying Assassin's Creed II these days because I'm waiting for other releases. Althought the game holds up incredibly well to this day, the controls map for the Xbox controller is plain dreadful, especially compared to the original console ports, to the point I had to spend my first half a hour or something in the game remapping everything to my liking
I'm the only one that liked Unity more than Syndicate? Syndicate has some nice features like the carriages but the equipment customization was absolute crap, and all the outfits look like shit, you cant even have the hood up unless you're sneaking around And the fact that there were different buttons for free running up and down pissed me off too Sure unity had pretty much bugs at the launch but when I got it for my PS4 this June it played absolutely flawless, apart from dropping a bit in FPS when I ran into those large protester groups The large variety of equipment you could have in it was great too, I loved how you could mix different hoods and torsos etc to how you wanted to play The fact that they made Origins so RPG-like makes me pretty darn stoked for the first time since like AC3
Unity easily has, in my eyes, the best gameplay out of every Assassin's Creed game. The stealth mechanics were great.
Unity easily has, in my eyes, the best gameplay out of every Assassin's Creed game. The stealth mechanics were great.
I really have to disagree. The combat and stealth are challenging at first, but once you've mastered them they become incredibly repetitive. Also there's that silly "cover kill" exploit that allows you to kill as many enemies as you want regardless of their level. It's how I got past a 5-star difficulty mission while I had 1 star experience. [editline]29th September 2017[/editline] And I've just replayed Unity and completed every single mission in the game, it's incredibly boring. The side-missions are all really interesting in context and well written, but the objectives are always the same. So redundant, holy shit.

They have their strengths and weaknesses but I do enjoy them one way or the other. It's a shame the level of customization of Unity was only because of the co-op component. Hopefully, Origins' customization will be as in depth (but it looks like it will be "outfits" again).

I loved Unity simply for the fact you could use and carry a rifle exclusively.
Also speaking of Unity, it crashes every 10 minutes on windows 10 now. I remember that being an issue but I thought it got patched by Ubisoft?
I've never had that issue and I'm on 10. Just played through the whole game without a hitch. [editline]1st October 2017[/editline] Or is that from the very last update?
I read it was compatibility issues with directx? But Im running directx12 so I don't know why it would be an issue.
So I recently finished Assassin's Creed Rogue and I thought I'd share a couple of things. Rogue is a great Assassin's Creed game. The gameplay is on par with AC4, if not better. The art direction is beautiful, all the locations are perfectly crafted to be superb, kinda varied, and fun to explore. And the story is decent for the most part, the ending was good. But the characters are utter shit. First there's the fact that none of the Assassins behave like Assassins, and none of the Templars behave like Templars. It's pretty literally an alternate universe with reversed roles. I can understand what the Templars are doing, but what in the ever-loving fuck are the Assassins doing? Killing civilians left and right, making examples out of innocent people, using chemical weapons on them? Did the writers really lack the tiny little bit of imagination required to have a hero understandably become a Templar, without making the Assassins seem like comic book villains for no reason? Then there are all the characters, none of which are likable. Among the Templars, even Haytham is incredibly shallow and boring. All the others are so kind and polite it's ridiculous. Among the Assassins, Achilles is an arrogant douche but I guess that's kinda justified, he's supposed to be another man from the one we met in 3. But all the rest are just insufferable and so fucking oblivious to everything. How could these guys ever become assassins, disillusioned as they are? And don't get me started on the worst two: the present-day Templars. Otso Berg is such a massive, idiotic, edgy cunt who wants to suck the Templars' cock all day long. His "inspirations" are always the same bullshit along the lines of "the Assassins are so stupid and flawed, the Templars are so smart and great". This guy is worse than Mass Effect 3's Kai Leng. And finally that huge fucking bitch Violetta. The most annoying character in the whole series from the first second you see her. And we're supposed to become best pals with those assholes? No way, I'll take the bullet any day. Just my ranting two-cents about the game with the worst characters in the series. Now I'm playing Syndicate, and I'll also have a specific rant ready about it. If you're wondering about what, well... Anyone familiar with this trope?
This would be my biggest qualm with Rogue as well, it is the one period in the Assassin's Creed timeline when the Assassins were objectively short-sighted and insane. Otherwise, they're depicted mostly noble.
Otso Berg is such a massive, idiotic, edgy cunt who wants to suck the Templars' cock all day long.
It kind of bugged me in Syndicate when you meet Ned Wynart, who is supposed to be "transsexual," and no one blinks so much as an eye or makes a passive comment about it.
Can you imagine the shitstorm if they had played it realistically?
though to be fair there had been plenty of women who dressed up as men, mainly to get jobs (you see this in the maritime world, there are a number of cases of women who dressed up as a man and successfully stayed hidden for a long time). However, Ned was so out there and really a pointless character storywise tbh. In fact, I hated the story in Syndicate, it jumped from villain to villain in no time flat. barely any characterization of these people, and there only a little for the main bad guy.
Can you imagine the shitstorm if they had played it realistically?
Realistically, there either wouldn't be this character, or he would actually try to hide he's a woman. You know, by using make-up to have a more masculine face, and mostly, changing your voice to sound male. Pretty sure a woman openly dressing and behaving like a man in the 19th century would get reported and locked up instantly. [editline]5th October 2017[/editline] Another big offense of Syndicate however is pretending that women in general in the Victorian era have the same liberties as men, which is absolutely wrong. Also the fact that no one ever questions the twins' blatant disregard for all social norms of that time, some of them grave. [editline]5th October 2017[/editline] Well no need for that rant post about Syndicate anymore, it's done. Unity did the historical part so well, and Syndicate could have too but they doubled back at some point, for some reason. Jesus, I pray Origins doesn't have any of this PC bullshit.
There! I'm finally done replaying all the main games in the Assassin's Creed series, and I'm ready for Origins. I have to say though, the Jack the Ripper DLC is really good. But Jesus Christ, it made me google that one photo that was taken of the fifth murder. Don't do it. Now all I have to do is wait for Origins. Also I'm secretly hoping for a very special Assassin's Creed game, set in the present, where all the present-day plots are resolved once and for all, and the Templars are destroyed for good... or temporarily enough. And after that game, no more present-day sequences in the series, forever. Just pure historical fun.
