Well its DICE's fault for fucking up the design, not players fault for not liking it. Don't say go play call of duty just because DICE fucked up combined ops.
We're never going back to old design. I think a large part has to do with modern graphics and technology. In 2 and 2142 infantry were safe in every structure, now they aren't. Also you could see in and out of buildings (the bloom wasn't HORRENDOUS, I can't see in or out of locker), also across open fields (I can't see outside on locker, so much snow and bloom). Also wookies were more common in 3 and they didn't help either. And air is STILL OP, fucking 10 games later.
I think that's really what mostly killed the design tbh. You just can't see shit. This only gets worse on large maps. Also I really disagree with having customization for vehicles; you just don't know what you're going up against.
Also once again pistol only servers are the best. I can't find them but when I played before its where I had the most fun. They were pretty fun in 2142 too.
[editline]8th December 2015[/editline]
That being said I didn't play 2. Only a bit of 1942 and mostly 2142, so I'm probably biased. I really miss 2142 and being on the smaller maps with 64 players. You'd be advancing with a ton of team mates then get orbital strike'd and it was a mad dash for cover.
[editline]8th December 2015[/editline]
Also C4 is still fucking OP and in 3 they gave snipers the orbital strike ("artillery") for some fucking reason.
The problem is also that players tend to gravitate towards the maps and playstyles I don't like, so it becomes a feedback loop of DICE catering to that style of gameplay because people keep playing it. It sucks for me, because that's not what I like, and not what Battlefield started as.
The beginning of the end was how popular infantry only Karkand servers were at the end of Battlefield 2's lifecycle. I hated how more than half the servers were Karkand 24/7. It got to the point where I only had a handful of servers to choose from if I didn't want Karkand. It was so overplayed, and not really my favorite kind of map, that it ruined the map for me. To this day I grumble at the thought of playing that map again.
Those 24/7 Karkand servers planted the seed of what became modern Battlefield.
Come Battlefield 3, EA really wants the Call of Duty audience. DICE remembers, "hey those Karkand infantry only servers were really popular, we should make a map like that for BF3." Metro is born. It's an infantry only map that's extremely linear and full of chokepoints. To be fair, it's not a terrible map in its own right when played the way it was designed: 24-32 player Rush or Conquest. However, that's not what the map became known for. The map was most popularly used in BF3 for 64 player Conquest which is a legendary clusterfuck of everything wrong with modern Battlefield concentrated into one map.
This combination dominated the server lists. In DICE's eyes, this reaffirmed and reinforced that that's what Battlefield players want. Operation Metro was death of classic Battlefield.
I know I'm being selfish. Battlefield is probably one of EA's biggest money makers, and I don't doubt that this change in direction is a large part of it. The old games just didn't have quite the same mass appeal that the current versions do. I can completely understand why Battlefield is what it is today, and while from a business standpoint I can't really blame them, that doesn't mean I have to like it.
To DICE Sweden's credit, they did move somewhat back in the classic direction with BF4. They fucked up the execution, but they learned a lot of lessons from BF3. BF4 was in many ways what I thought BF3 should have been. They also laid the shaky foundation for DICE LA to come in and fix everything and give us the amazing BF4 we have today.
I can't say enough good things about DICE LA and what they've done for BF4 since they took over. I get the feeling that it's a studio run by fans who grew up playing the pre-Frostbite games. That they chose Dragon Valley, of all maps, especially when they could have taken the easy route and just remake Karkand again (which was very popularly requested), speaks volumes to me about the kind of players they are. Dragon Valley was always one of my favorites of BF2 and an underrated gem that unfortunately few people played because it wasn't Karkand.
DICE LA seems to "get" Battlefield, and I really hope that they're put in charge of Battlefield 5 or whatever the next main series game ends up being. I think they deserve it.
I think it's okay if you just like the infantry combat in BF4. In my opinion, BF4 has a much superior gunplay to COD and even close quarter battles like in lockers feel much better than any Call of Duty I've ever played. I don't think it's fair to look down on people who just like to play infantry.
[editline]7th December 2015[/editline]
Also, coming back from TF2 makes me appreciate how good the netcode is in BF4.
To specifically respond to this, I really like the infantry combat in BF4, and it's good to have variety and choice. Some days I just want to play some laid back TDM or Domination and just shoot some dudes without having to worry about the bigger battle taking place.
I think it's better to design for a bigger game and then take things out to create smaller game modes than the other way around. I feel like it's easier to adapt a huge 64 player game with vehicles into a smaller infantry only game mode than the other way around.

One last thing, I really want to say again that I do genuinely like Battlefield 4 and think it's a very good game in its own right. I hate sounding like I'm just shitting all over it and hating on Battlefield in general. The games are different, but they're not that different. I've still got big-ish maps, Conquest, and lots of different vehicles to play with and against in combined arms with infantry. I just wish it was done a little bit differently, because then to me it would go from being very good to great.
Sorry about all these horribly lengthy posts. This is the game series that's probably the closest to my heart as I've been playing these games since the very beginning and they're what got me started with modding and eventually programming. It's hard for me not to write a lot about it.
BF4 and BF4 Premium 50% off
Oh shieet.
Better tell my friends about this.
Here's how some players really are clueless:

For context, this was the first match I had after a two-week break and the first thing I did was go on a 17 killstreak on foot which ticked-off some of those guys.

I learned nothing. Playing dead is nearly impossible in this game. People will spot anything and If It's enemy they shoot.

I don't know how in God's name he didn't see me.
You'd be surprised how unaware people can be, for example I was playing Giants earlier and was holding the F point with the large parked cargo truck when a tank rolls up. Now I play a different mixture of game modes and the current one was conquest large hardcore, so the tank would pretty much vaporize me instantly if it saw me. There was no feasible cover near me, as it was all open so out of quick desperation I dropped prone and scooted directly behind the front tire. It was just thick enough to block the main portion of my silhouette minus my elbows and the tank spent a good minute trying to find where I was holding the point from that it drove next to the vehicle I was hiding under. I crawled halfway out from under the truck and repair tool'd it until the drive caught on and tried to peel backwards, but by then it was a simple matter of pulling out my rpg and saying bye bye.
speaking of tank encounters, i remember soloing an IFV in BF3 with an assault rifle
Wake Island, and i was in the open, on a slope leading down to the beach. the thing comes and kills a few of my teammates and then notices me standing there. i'm going to die anyway, so i charge the thing while unloading dakka into its front armor. this conveniently puts me under the IFV's main gun and it starts reversing to get a better shot; it backs up right into the sea and the driver is forced to exit the tank - conveniently enough, he spawns right infront of the rifle barrel and gets a bullet in the face
While we are on this topic.
I remember playing on snow map as a Transport Vehicle (ex: ZFB-05) with a standard camo.
Some tanks entered the capture point but they couldn't locate the source (person standing on the point).
Eventually, one tank left the area and get destroyed, while other was still searching. Thankfully he didn't find me (leave vehicle and enter vehicle).
Seriously. Default Camo on vehicles. You'll be amazed how many people you can fool with this.
I once pulled off the same thing on Silk Road. Just sitting in a default camo IFV doing nothing as chinese engineers ran past me
I just found out there's a box in the new community map that gives you the phantom bow instantly if you break it; what the fuck, I'm happy I don't have to grind it

what a phantom
Think I think I got enough footage for a new montage soon:

I also got these, some of them can quite easily make of an individual video but most I don't know how to classify:

I kinda stuck myself in a corner with the gimmick of all my video titles starting with "How to..."
I guess it's not that important. It's only worth doing if I keep enjoying it.
What do you use to record?
Shadowplay set to save up the last 3 minutes of gameplay.
It's pretty great to save space, you don't have to record a whole match for the highlights.
Just do your thing until something great happens and then hit the save button.
[editline]14th December 2015[/editline]
Also, since Shadowplay uses a hardware-based solution for recording (in an Nvidia card) it barely affects framerate since the buffer is actually kept on the card itself.
You'll only get a slight hitch when you press the save button since it'll transfer the buffer to the HDD but it's never an issue since it only lasts a second.
[editline]14th December 2015[/editline]
Would you believe that all those clips only occupy 23 gigs in total?

Ah, I have a 770 so Shadowplay supported but I was wary to use the Shadow feature for fear of it impacting gameplay.
It's mostly dependent on how fast your CPU can transcode I think.
I got a i7-4790K so I barely get a hitch when I hit the save button.
There's also a classic "Record" setting but that will definitely impact performance since it transcodes in real time instead of storing it to buffer first.
the record setting barely, if at all, affects my FPS
I have a GTX770, an i5 4440 and an average 7200rpm HDD

Cool, I have the same setup. I'll turn it on and see if I can capture anything cool.

Neat! Let me know how it goes
Also, may I ask what drivers are you using? I'm stuck with some old-ass drivers since using newer ones caps my Battlefield 4 at 25FPS...

I'm using the current ones with no FPS issues.

Well, it's all relative. I run the game at 144hz so even a loss of 15-20 fps with the Record option is noticeable for me.

well, my point is that the fps drop is minimal. Of course with a refresh rate that high everything matters
Did you make the jump from 60/75 to 144 recently? I've never had the chance to get my grubby hands (eyes?) on a 144hz monitor

Battlefield 5: Invisibile War.
I have no idea how this happen. For whole match I had only few layers of sounds. No ambience , no vo.
Bizarre.

I wonder if I should just disable Shadowplay altogether. Time to time it crashes my game and ruins the awesome moment I want to record.
I've got a beefy PC, but I get -sort of- lag spikes when using shadowplay.
I've taken the easy road and went with Fraps for the time being, but it hurts my 1TB SSD, a lot.

Oh, this is 1 hour and 13 minutes of gameplay btw. Captured on 2560x1440. One minute is like almost 2GB .-.
