Rhythm Game Megathread v1 - Don't stop moving to the funky funky beat
1,521 replies, posted
the problem is that you're playing the same song over and over again. do not DO THATT!!!!!!
that sort of behaviour is what stunted me in skill progression during my earliest months of play. vary the songs you play widely
If you restart or fail twice, new song. Gotta learn how to read the beats rather than memorize each song.
stars rankings in osu don't mean shit, do they?
I've come across 2 stars that are much, much harder than 3+ stars
fuck whoever thinks 'fast normals' are a good idea
They work pretty well after like 4 stars from what I've seen, not sure about lower though.

followed this advice
ended up burning through my entire library with not a single score and lots of frustration
I just decided to take a break from osu until summer stops being such a bitch.
Speaking of which, any other (preferably free) rhythm games that don't require a mouse to play?
fingers getting faster but acc is dropping blarb

probably late but damn this is awesome
someone turned osu into a visualizer

I have begun playing Lunatic Rave 2 recently and I am a total beginner at it. What is a good keyconfig for somebody who doesn't have one of those fancy beatmania controller things?

depending on which pinky you want to work out more:
sdf[space]jkl;
or
asdf[space]jkl
or the following to work around 6kro
[l-ctrl]asdkl;[r-shift]
alternatives for thumbs instead of pinky:
qwecmiop
asd[l-alt][r-alt]kl;
asd[space][num0][num4][num5][num6]
i also suggest ruv-it instead of LR2, as the latest versions of LR2 has a fatal memory leak causing it to crash after ~5-8 plays, and they both use the same song files. the GUI of ruv-it it also in full english, but the skinning support isn't as crazily detailed as LR2. i know ruv-it works with a japanese locale but i haven't bothered testing it with english yet; i know LR2 requires japanese in order to work though.
just got rekt by the creator of osu :suicide:
[t]http://3kelv.in/~techbot/ShareX/2014/07-25/18-15-52_241.png[/t]
so a while ago i grabbed a bunch of bms songs for LR2, but never sat through and played them all. Then when i switched over to ruv-it, it required a slightly different folder system so i just merged them all from subfolders because i was lazy. But in the process i managed to slightly corrupt various folders, causing some weird artifacts to happen in various songs. It wasn't my best moment tbh.
Because of this, i'm currently using a temporary "test" folder where i put a song in, play it to see if i like it or if it's even any good, and then move it to a different subfolder depending on what my opinion of it is. Yesterday i went through all of the folders that started with: symbols, numbers, and the letter A!
Out of those maps i've tested so far, this one was probably my favorite:

i still have some problems sight-reading the yellow/smaller notes so i'm not quite up to where i was when i was using the fixed-width single color osu!mania skin, but i'm getting there.
my fav feature of ruv-it is setting it so i only have a combo if i get a perfect/max (a 300 or rainbow300 in osu!mania), which i call "good"/"great" in my skin. it helped me a lot with my accuracy so far because i can tell whenever i get a 200("okay") or below!
Today i'm planning on doing all of the folders that start with B/C/D~
Just a question, where do you get the songs for ruv-it?
basically charts can be found here: http://manbow.nothing.sh/event/event.cgi
and most entries on lr2ir have links to a download so you can just browse the most popular to find some: http://www.dream-pro.info/~lavalse/LR2IR/search.cgi
[editline]25th July 2014[/editline]
because it's not explained very well on the website, it'll look into subfolders next to ruvit.exe by default with any name (rubyBOX is data/skins related to ruv-it):
[t]http://i.imgur.com/2pB8oyk.png[/t] the folder on the right is "maps_new", where you see me slowly getting rid of the "C" entries
if you want, you can choose an alternate location for songs. Like "G:/GAMESHIT/BMS", and it'll look for subfolders inside of there with names.
So basically this is where it'll look:
./{bms_container_folders_that_aren't_named_rubyBOX}/{actual_bms_folders}
G:/GAMESHIT/BMS/{bms_container_folder}/{actual_bms_folders}
you can add more paths by adding the following line to the end of ruby.ini, replacing it with your actual path. more lines can be added by changing "1" to "2", etc
[PATH]
1=G:\GAMESHIT\BMS
after that you can just click on this bar at the top of your play window to choose the folder you want (or even all of the folders at once!!)

[editline]25th July 2014[/editline]
one other thing. ruv-it has it's own InternetRanking as well
you can sign up from here: http://bms.nvyu.net/regist/index.php
fill it out like so:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/Ac38xdT.png[/t]
you'll be greeted by something like this when you log in:

then when you click on a song, it'll bring you to this page, which often has a download link as well:

[editline]25th July 2014[/editline]
and then you can input your login credentials into the client to auto-submit your stuff:

This song is a literal workout for me right now. Sweating all over.
Still a bit rough around the edges accuracy wise but this shit gave me 60 pp.
-informative things-
[editline]Yes[/editline]
Okay I found a way to download a single song from the first link you gave..Any way to download them in packs instead of one by one?

It's really weird and I aint figured it out yet but step 1 for me was change the keybinds lol
Pillow make that darn guide already pls ty.
Also I downloaded a song with 7k in its name, but it wasn't 7k, got like 8k in it
also wasn't 7k+1
yea i'm writing the guide now
i was at work and just got off~
responded to your PM about how to change keybinds

all songs that are 7K are 7K+1
all songs that are 5k are 5K+1
there is no "not +1"
some maps are 14K+2 (7DP)
some maps are 10K+2 (5DP)
[editline]26th July 2014[/editline]
if you want to play 7K (not +1) songs i'm pretty sure stepmania has a 7K mode
but i'm pretty sure it can't handle true BMS files (7K + turntable) so you'll have to find proper files somewhere else
oh
oh theres no 7k
ok well that blows bad.
Eh, I'm back to o2mania and stepmania and osu!mania then lol
wow pleb can't even use your pinky
get wrekct son
[editline]26th July 2014[/editline]
took a break from writing for a sec to play this song
it's incredibly rad
probably my favorite map all years

it even has a [12] diff that i don't even want to look at right now

so close yet so far google
okay i have a basic portion of the ruv-it guide finished; at least up to the point where the game can run. Nothing at all about the interface, how to configure it, skins, etc.
here's a link to it: Google Doc
i'm taking a dinner break for a little bit and i'll update the rest later in parts
okay i got most of the default keybinds (and what they do) and a few of the screens annotated added to the guide
but i never realized how much shit was actually in this client
so many annotations and this is only one screen!!
(at least there's only like 9 screens)
although i did lean a few more features about the client that i've never needed to touch before while i've been going through this, so at least it's been worthwhile.
