Rhythm Game Megathread v1 - Don't stop moving to the funky funky beat

woo 2p buddy
i play 2P with keyboard
and 1P with joystick because nobody really ever makes lefty joysticks
although i could try turning my joystick upside down
actually going to try that now tbh
[editline]20th January 2015[/editline]
i noticed a while back that i typically default to using my right hand for middle key so now that i've switched it around i have to use my left hand for middle key so i can actually reach the joystick but that's a really big hurdle to add all of a sudden so now my reading is fucked when i flip the joystick upside down
aaaaaa
finally getting somewhere with 7K on o!mania
feels great
the bassline in this is p cool
Easy cleared my first ★3. I've only actually easy cleared a few songs on the insane scale :v:
i'm pretty sure you have to be an octopus to play anything above [10] BMS
like legit my few times playing [11]s i sometimes feels like i may as well just palm the entire playing surface and call it a day

become one with your inner octopus

That's what it feels like. Transitioning from mainly wrist to mainly finger play takes time. Took me weeks of mashing to start understanding. Keep going with your fightstick, I would love to see you clear a ridiculous chart with it one day :v:

Awesome job. Can't imagine the frustration you've gone through for this.

Any time you get to a scratch heavy part on these videos I cant help but laugh at how ridiculous it looks with the fight stick.

it picks up even the slightest of movements as input so i normally have to alternate between multiple different ways of hitting the stick to determine how many/fast it registers. i had to come up with quite a few techniques in order to get some kind of consistent output from it
sometimes i hit it back and forth for a fast scratch
other times i singletap it in a single direction for a slower scratch
sometimes i do those while keeping my hand on the stick at all times
other times i alternatingly take my hand off the stick for varying rests in the beat
sometimes i roll my hand on the top of the stick to create a slow scratch
other times i use the tips of my fingers to vibrate and create a fast scratch
it's actually p fun
free form scratch and static key hand is the best play style. i don't know what yours is though because i can't decipher what button is what from your videos
but being able to switch between different playstyles on one hand is really useful
[editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
i play as closely to 1048 as possible now, with the exception of the habit of hitting 5, 6 and seven with just the thumb instead of two/three fingers (something i need to abandon and learn to do properly)
[editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
pink TT and key lights and custom pendual ASC art otw woo

my right hand can generally hit all of the keys if needed, but i don't have a lot of practice with hitting [1]&[2]. if something requires a lot of scratching with simple notes, i'll often try to let my right hand handle all 7 normal keys. if it's heavy scratch with complex notes (something i see a lot in 11 diffs) then i'll wrap my pinky around the base of the joystick and try hitting 1&2 with my left hand, and leave the rest to my right hand
the index finger on my right hand alternates between [4]&[5], although during complex holds involving those keys i often use my thumb as well for a buffer, then rotate my hand as needed
yeah we're pretty much the same other than the index finger on 4/5
heh heh scrubbed out a c clear on mei (h)
the scales before the slowdown are rlly hard

what simulator is this? i want to start bms but its completely foreign to me and i have no idea where to begin
I used to play stepmania with the keyboard in the mid-late 2000's with all those crazy impossible stepfiles. Watching these videos makes me wanna do some of this shit, where do I begin?
what simulator is this? i want to start bms but its completely foreign to me and i have no idea where to begin
I think it's called Lunatic Rave 2
what simulator is this? i want to start bms but its completely foreign to me and i have no idea where to begin
that's not a sim, but the spada/pendual skins for LR2HD are pretty much exactly like that if you want to get in to BMS.

rea's blog is a good start for getting in to BMS. he's the best player outside of japan
LR2 a shit; old versions don't even simulate longnote release timing and the last releases have fatal memory leaks
ruv-it 4 lyfe ... at least until something better comes about
what simulator is this? i want to start bms but its completely foreign to me and i have no idea where to begin
if you see anybody playing an IIDX past 16 (the last home console version) and it's not footage in an arcade, there's a very good chance they pirated a rip of the arcade cabinets
unless they somehow got hold of an old arcade cab and imported it to wherever they live, but that's upwards of $4000+ for rhythm games which is pretty insane
they could also be using LR2, but if they're playing an official map of anything past 16 once again that's most likely warez since konami doesn't distribute anything for IIDX outside of arcades really anymore.
[editline]26th January 2015[/editline]
although ruv-it also has the problem where it doesn't implement proper "poor" not hits and only punishes you on the HP bar if you do it
actually i'm not even sure how Ruv-it's HP bar works that much
ALSO
i realized that i have waaay more concentration when i'm sleep deprived (although it's more like i lose the ability to multitask so i stop getting distracted as easily) so i made the obviously superb choice of depriving myself of sleep and not sleeping last night at all and still heading off to work like normal so i'm now on day 2 of awakeness
it actually worked because i "cleared" 2 songs i was having trouble with. but although i gain concentration i also lose finger dexterity and agility so it's kind of a bad tradeoff for some of the harder songs but who cares about that shit i actually got to the end of the songs for once!
like legit i've played that EOS song so many times simply because it pissed me off and like the first time i try it while in this sleep deprived state i managed to finally get passed that one burststream part

time literally felt like it was moving so much slower
like imagine the matrix and that is basically almost not quite what it was like
i tried playing some really hard [10]s and a few [11]s and although i got like halfway i eventually tanked from lack of finger strength
also it seems i accidentally smudged my webcam and made it blurry i should go clean that now
i'm sure lr2 works just fine for the moment considering basically everyone but you uses it
i don't get memory leaks in lr2hd. it doesn't crash and the timing is right
so a controller of some kind is pretty much required, right?
can't imagine playing 8K on a keyboard
p.s there are simfiles for almost every iidx version as far as i can tell, so you totally can witness a lot of people on youtube playing those in lr2
so a controller of some kind is pretty much required, right?

nah, not required. much better with a controller however since you can gauge your skill with that to other controller players which make up the majority of BMS players i think (at least in japan)
i played bms on keyboard for a few months
[editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
the more bms/iidx players the merrier, this thread should be more active
hmm
what layout did you use?
a s d f on left hand, j k l ; on the right. ; being the scratch (key 8/+1) because i'm 2p sided
i'm sure lr2 works just fine for the moment considering basically everyone but you uses it

quite a lot of people use ruv-it in youtube videos. some people use LR2, and some people use ruv-it. they both have their ups and downs
would you care to get me these totally accurate and not bullshit statistics of "basically everyone" using it?
quite a lot of people get memory leaks in the latest versions, myself included
here's some logs i made just now from using 100201 from the official site. look at lr2body.exe in resource manager, private memory is the actual memory it's using
before playing any songs
after 1 song
after about 10 songs
i tend to crash after playing 20-40 songs or so, either completely all the way or stopping/starting constantly. the memory leak is mostly caused with the background videos, but it still happens with them disabled (just at a slower pace)
and i never said the timing was wrong?
i said it doesn't fail you when you don't release longnotes at the correct time. you can continue holding that key for as long as you want and it only cares about when you started holding the note, unlike IIDX does.
i can tell you haven't tested it yourself. hell, even the blogpost you linked mentions that it's not accurate with longnotes at all making everything way easier
p.s there are simfiles for almost every iidx version as far as i can tell, so you totally can witness a lot of people on youtube playing those in lr2
p.s they rip them from the SSD that's in the arcade cabinets, upload them online for other people to download, and other people pirate them then upload youtube videos of them in lr2
why are you so strangely hostile all the time
[editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
i never played lr2 for 20-40 songs at a time but i distinctly remember someone in this thread mentioning that it does it after 5 or 6 lol
and i never insisted you said timing was wrong i was just saying i thought it was pretty solid when it came to options for making the timing window accurate
i think ruv it is a fine client but it's very simple. it has a lot of problems, like not scaling properly beyond native resolution, a lack of score graphs and (in my experience) a buggy video player amongst other small things like skinning issues. that said i did use ruv it for a long time because you recommended it but i much prefer lr 2 with the hd launcher to that now regardless of memory leaks
basically there is no good bms player with an active development. maybe if peppy didnt make the mistake of not using bms for mania we would have a good, polished client
why are you so strangely hostile all the time
you're welcome to interpret my posts however you want to but i can assure you i'm as neutral as possible
if you want an example of someone with consistently hostile posts you could try reading Reds posts for a while tho. for the other end of the perspective you could try BDA's posts that are so friendly it's almost condescending
yep that someone is me.
my laptop died so i started using my old backup computer until i got the funds for a new replacement computer (my current one). it only had 2-4GB of memory so the memory leak was extremely exxagerated. LR2 is most likely C++ so most people would know to actually wrap memory allocation in a try catch to prevent OoM errors. so i started searching for an alternative client and found ruv-it
if you have 8GB+ like i do now it'll take a lot longer until it crashes, but just retrying the same few songs a couple of times without fully completing them can easily reach critical mass in a short period of time
the timing system of LR2 is identical to Ruv-it, and there's no way to change the timing unless you want to register it as a different song with IRs, becaues you have to modify the bms/bme itself in order to change it. not sure why'd you bother pointing it out tbh
the video player just uses your computers codecs. install a codec pack like k-lite, or update your codecs yourself, and the mpgs will run properly.
jesus christ if there's anything I've learned from 8K o!mania then it's that 7K is 1000x easier
i'm not octupus enough for this yet

Not really, it seems like it's a lot harder going from 7k to 8k though
That eighth key on keyboard is a bit like a key you only have to press about a tenth of the time compared to the rest of the keys
Also does ruvit have a green number/lane cover system? I never used a cover when I used it. That being missing is an instant deal breaker
[editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
by the way when I say lr2 has good timing and things by standard what with asio and all that stuff, I don't mean to say that ruvit is worse at those things. I just think calling LR2 shit is being very harsh on a otherwise good client that hasn't been in active development for a while AFAIK
[editline]27th January 2015[/editline]
Help out with raindrop on github if you can program and stuff
Can I actually use my USB MIDI keyboard for a controller?
yep
i'm at the top now :')
