Rhythm Game Megathread v1 - Don't stop moving to the funky funky beat
hmm
what layout did you use?
I primarily played 7k starting out (o!m) so when I transitioned to 7k+1 I found it easier to just add a key on the side (pinky) instead of inserting one in the middle (2 thumbs). Controllers aren't necessary (most top players use KB) but seem way more fun from what I've seen. Even cheap USB keyboards will let you press 6 keys + 4 modifiers at once so take advantage of that if you want to get past the 6 key USB limit. For reference, the layout I use is sdf[space]./[rshift][rctrl]. Basically, it's just my 7k setup with a pinky stuck in on the right. Seems easier to switch between o!m and BMS that way, at least for me.
seems like i'm the only one in the world who uses the S E F Space J I L non-single-line layout
i guess i'll look into adding LShift for 8K or something
this is how you play beatmania

i was gonna get these LEDs when i got my dao but they were listed as pink on the site and was like nah i want purple but it turns out on dao's site pink = purple
yeah they're more magenta-purple than pink
[..]I just think calling LR2 shit is being very harsh on a otherwise good client that hasn't been in active development for a while AFAIK
the fact that you unironically thought i was using "4 lyfe" and "a shit" in a serious manner at all is kind of hilarious tbh
like for reals i can't recall a single instance of anyone ever using either of those seriously

i used sef[space]jil for a while, and even posted about it in the thread multiple times
i had to stop because my keyboard only supports 6KRO on the home row (adsfgjkl;), all other rows had shit wiring. if i held F, i couldn't hold E, etc.
i've also used asdf jkl; for symmetrical 8K
and asdf[space]jkl; for 7K+1 (a & ; = scratch), but i usually just defaulted to pressing ; instead of a

the cover thing should be possible with ruv-it's skinning system, but i'm not at my home computer atm so i can't check for you. there's no easy built-in option for it at least
i'll look into it later tho
I used to play stepmania with the keyboard in the mid-late 2000's with all those crazy impossible stepfiles. Watching these videos makes me wanna do some of this shit, where do I begin?
i also started (and never finished) a guide for playing BMS using ruv-it (the totally superior BMS client)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CjrORQ9GbcmGVj_dTQ5rLTn0AeSOCtJoCB9qcIRlj9Y?usp=sharing
it tells you up until it actually starts running, but i never bothered writing anything past that like configuration stuff
main thing with the config menus is that the options are separated in pages, and usually the first variable on the page changes the page if you press right/left arrow on it. and the variables look the same as all of the other ones so it's easy to miss. an sometimes the variable is at the bottom of the page on a few options pages.
shits wack but ~whateves~

if you have to defend your comments as being sarcasm when they're not written so obviously then you've done something wrong
[editline]28th January 2015[/editline]
also adjustable green number is totally a must. when i'm out of practice i adjust it back by 10-15 so i can read properly, and use higher BPMs on scratchy charts because i overshoot them
best chart still in existence

i can't deal with the slowdowns on f. maxx at all, which is why i find dolce's AAA so impressive. he just does them like they're nothing
Has anyone played Parappa the Rapper on PS1? I tried playing it on emulator but it seemed very strict on timing for me and I couldn't get it at all. I've played my fair share of rhythm games so I was expecting it to be easy but I just got wrecked in the second stage.
yea i owned it on console. i beat it a few times way back. frog man best stage
the last level is pretty unfair because it actually removes the button prompts after a while so you have to memorize the patterns
[editline]29th January 2015[/editline]
the "Cool" rating is really dumb tho imo
but i guess it's okay for people who've already beaten the game and want something a little different
Has anyone played Parappa the Rapper on PS1? I tried playing it on emulator but it seemed very strict on timing for me and I couldn't get it at all. I've played my fair share of rhythm games so I was expecting it to be easy but I just got wrecked in the second stage.
It has really odd timing which is awkward to figure out, and then if you play the psp remake the timing is completely different again
Has anyone played Parappa the Rapper on PS1? I tried playing it on emulator but it seemed very strict on timing for me and I couldn't get it at all. I've played my fair share of rhythm games so I was expecting it to be easy but I just got wrecked in the second stage.
Yeah, plus emulating rhythm games usually sucks. I tried to play Rhythm Tengoku on emulator once and it was pretty much impossible.
Yeah, plus emulating rhythm games usually sucks. I tried to play Rhythm Tengoku on emulator once and it was pretty much impossible.
Yeah I tried Rhythm Tengoku on VBA too and I just assumed I sucked even when I beat the DS one.
the jump from [10] to [11] bms is way too large, and i've tried grinding [11]s long enough, so i gave up and started using panic mod on [9]s and [10]s to get myself used to fast dumb randomized patterns instead
there's still a few portions that i'm pretty weak on so i have to kind of just power through those sections still but i'm getting there at least. i vastly improved my double-chord reading, but i still get a little messed up on triples

the scary thing is that a vast majority of my [11]s are still far harder than these so i think i'll be stuck on [10]s for a while yet
the jump from [10] to [11] bms is way too large, and i've tried grinding [11]s long enough, so i gave up and started using panic mod on [9]s and [10]s to get myself used to fast dumb randomized patterns instead
I know the feeling. The awful mislabeling and jumps in difficulty past ☆10 are the reasons I just skipped to ★1 and grinded 40-60 score rates until I started easy clearing charts.
How long have you been grinding? I know everyone is different (plus you're using a different controller than me) but I would recommend you to keep trying ☆11s alongside other stuff.
i always find it more satisfying to score attack 9s and 10/11s rather than keep trying to scrub out higher rank charts
clears are cool, but they don't really show consistency or anything like that (but each 2 their own)

midtown js u play on a crazy hi speed respect for that, i can only stick 270-290 with a 25 lane cover

Haha, it's actually not that high - my judge is delayed as hell (+50 ms). I'm used to having a huge playfield and low judgement line because of o2jam/osu!mania. Also it makes me absolute garbage during BPM changes
How long have you been grinding? I know everyone is different (plus you're using a different controller than me) but I would recommend you to keep trying ☆11s alongside other stuff.
not long enough to legitimately fret about it
when playing keyboard i could easily clear most [10], and could clear at least some [11]
when i switched to fightstick i had to learn a different reading method, along with different button methods, and i swapped from 2P->1P when i made the switch. so it took me a while to get back up to my "normal" playing level
a few of the maps that i had trouble with using keyboard are extremely easy with stick. a few of the songs i'm currently having trouble with are extremely easy with keyboard. this could also be attributed to the fact that certain songs are just inordinately harder/easier with/without mirror flip.
For example, "scales" are trivial to do on a keyboard, but one of the hardest patterns on a stick. So i thought about the hand motions for a while, brainstormed a few ways to get better at it, and just practiced various motions until i could do it quickly enough. I can now usually do them easily enough, but there's a few that trip me up, and a lot of [11] throw in a ton of extremely fast scales i'm not capable of doing yet.
The pattern below would be somewhat hard on a keyboard, but pretty easy on a stick
| | | |-| |-| |-|
| | |-| |-| |-| |
| |-| |-| |-| | |
| | |-| |-| |-| |
| | | | | | | | |
I would always fail the following pattern on keyboard, but it's actually pretty trivial on a stick
(if i could use SEF[space]JIL binding without my keyboard freaking out it would be relatively trivial on keyboard too though)
| | | | | | | | |
| |-| |-| | | | |
| | |-| | | | | |

after i finish up a playing session i always go back and try to play a few of my favorite [11] maps that i can't yet beat. one is a "piano" song with tons of scales that was even too much for me when i was playing the keyboard. it's currently my goal to beat it on a fightstick, so i think my playcount on that map is somewhere over 80 atm? i usually get a little over halfway and then it goes into "piano solo" mode where the entire song cuts out and it's just you playing extremely fast scales all over the place.
[editline]5th February 2015[/editline]
also using ruv-it's scrolling speed, i try to keep my songs between "500->700 effective BPM". so a song at 180BPM would use 3.5x
a song at 150BPM would probably use 4.0x or 4.5x
i forget what i use using "hispeed" or LR2's scale. probably around 250 to 275

HC AAing everything
Element of SPADA 1,691 [80.68%] AA HC
Let The Track Flow 1,478 [78.37%] AA HC
MAGIC & LOVE 1,479 [78.42%] AA HC
DROP 1,540 [69%] A HC
AA'd waxing and wanding (h) 10 but no pass :(
i think a lot of accuracy improvement comes from simply hitting the keys harder. i manhandle my asc, you could probably hear it across the street
here's some of the typical [11]s that destroy me
after my panic practice i'm almost at the point where i can pass them, although i still make dumb mistakes

and here's an autoplay of my "goal" song, the one with the piano solo and super fast scales over and over and over
i think a lot of accuracy improvement comes from simply hitting the keys harder. i manhandle my asc, you could probably hear it across the street
accuracy is probably the easiest part tbh
just put the music up loud enough and use headphones then hit the notes when they're supposed to and you'll have rainbow greats for days (or in my case, golden greats)
supah ez pro strats
but then again i have absolutely no problems with slow SV or speed changes because i made sure to practice them so maybe i'm a little biased
i also have ruv-it set to break combo when i get less than a "great" (which my skin shows as great/good instead of great/great) so i'm used to training accuracy at all times
which also means that if i ever full combo a song i'll also "full great" it at the same time which is pretty cool but expectedly i haven't bothered to FC anything because it's not worth the effort

Nice clears. And yeah, I've broken two keyboards since starting BMS two months ago. They were both 10 dollars, but still.
Plus, my accuracy is still terrible even with LR2's judge

You're actually making really good progress. I guess you don't need to worry about grinding after all :v:
fuckin finally hardcleared (and cleared for that matter) bridal festival (a) . this map is a really hard 9 to me because of the symmetry

soz osu mania sucks hard
Anyone know where I can get a JP/US KOC? I want to get an ASC but I'm poor. Also, can you flip the keys around on a KOC to make it 2P?

do you mean similar song-wise, or similar note-wise
because if it's note-wise then there's way too many to even remember one. if you want something with a lot of chords and symmetry/bracketing, then go find some trance/house songs.
DeepOcean - Okari & Natullary - -Ryo- & Serika - 箱崎 星梨花 are some of my favs in that regard.
song-wise closest (but i'm terrible at "close to" things where someone isn't more specific about what they want):
Caniche - Cromo

おはなし - lonely katydid (you're going to hate this song's scroll changes :^) )
だらだら妖精 - Nitrix (song changes halfway so it's half like it i guess)
song-wise not very close (but worth mentioning at least):
Highlander - Lhou x Metagalaxy
時計物語 - Daisan

Wind (R.M. RMX) - Ether (Remix by RM)
if the download links are dead just find the torrent link on the main page for that "event" (either BOF2012 or BOF2013) and you should be able to select only a single one that way. although sometimes it's hard to find what you want because they name their folders weirdly most of the time. if i come across any more i'll keep it in mind, but i didn't really check out G2R2014 yet if there was any in there. And there still might be some i missed in 2012/2013 because i only looked in my "Good/Okay" folders, not the root "2012/2013" folders that still have a ton of other songs left in them that i have never played yet.
