Rhythm Game Megathread v1 - Don't stop moving to the funky funky beat

After 6 months of Osu, it was only last month I started Taiko and last week I started Mania. I got depressed at how bad I was but then I remembered how much progress I've made in Osu even just last month.

My grades have also been picking up with the motivation I get from seeing myself actually get better at something for once.

What happens when randomly-generated stages go wrong. :v:
So I've been playing FoFiX (a mod of Frets on Fire) long before I ever heard of Phase Shift, and nobody can provide a proper explanation on why I should switch outside of "just switch its better".
Why?
Keep in mind that I play with a guitar controller, and FoFiX supports much of the same shit Phase Shift does, as far as I can tell - multi-instruments, Rock Band stuff like solos, I think there's even local multiplayer.

i've never played vib-ribbon, do you like have to hold up/down + a button depending on the shape/orientation of the obstacles?
of course i could just read up on it on like wikipedia or something but this is more fun
also it robbed you just short of 1k points!
What are some good rhythm games out on the PC? I doubt there's any that are similar to Parappa or Gitaroo Man, which are my favorites.
what the fuck are these symbols the Easy map has an 'I' and the others have some weird 'X'

Gameplay wise I'm not sure as I have never played either of them but looking at videos of them Phase Shift looks better graphically.

[editline]hello[/editline]
Dunno what it's doing on normals though.

Better use of practice (slowdowns on the fly and such like in Rock Band), online rankings and multiplayer, looks better.
Question, how the hell did you people make the jump from Normal to Hard ranked songs?
I'm getting too comfortable on Normal's and I'm getting S and SS ranks on over 90% of the songs I play so I want to step up to hard but it feels like the difference is so huge. Especially the speed and the fact that I think I am going to need to learn to use two fingers on the keyboard.
What's the best way for me to get up to doing good on Hard without failing Hard songs over and over again?

Well not necessarily up/down; you can use one of two buttons to avoid each obstacle. L1 or L2 to dodge blocks, Up or Down for pits, R1 or R2 for loops, and X or Triangle for waves (though, my preferred button-scheme is L1, Down, R1, and X). Then there's combined obstacles like L1+X for wave-blocks (top of the block is replaced with a wave), R1+Down for loop-pits (top of the loop has a triangle), etc. Also, you can't hold down the buttons, you have to press them right before the obstacle. :v:
But you know what's more fun than me describing it? This!

Do you know if this works on PS3? I might have to buy it if I can find it (looks like something that wouldn't sell a ton but is fun to play).
You're probably going to start wanting to use two fingers yes. Some stuff is just too fast to single-tap especially in the early stages.
You'll also run into streams at some point (several notes mashed together usually as close as the BPM) which basically requires you to alternate each note but are super fun!
You don't necessarily have to alternate each note all the time but it's probably easier to start there. I really have no idea how to best start.
I used to alternate every note but lately just started single-tapping everything (except certain quick stuff) since it's way easier to not mess up that way.
The difficulty for maps can be varying too depending on who mapped it.

Well as close as bpm is not exactly true. Streams are 1/4 meaning you get bpm * 4 notes per minute.
Move aside scrubs.

Taiko no Tatsujin master race
I wish this game had an english release, playing it on my NDS right now, loadsa fun, even though I can't understand shit.
I just play games like Audiosurf and Beat Hazard.
I find them strangely relaxing and fun....WHEN I HAVE NEW MUSIC.

I stopped playing that map after I could A it regularly, I can't aim for an S for obvious reasons so A was my final goal but darn it's so satisfying to hit the patterns on it.

I tend to play Audiosurf when I want to listen to music but want something to do while listening it without having to bother actually working on anything. Which is why it's the most played game on my games list by nearly double the second most played game. :v:

So I just found this picture on my hard drive.
I just... What?
Normal is way too fucking easy
and hard is way too fucking difficult
Am I the only one having this problem with osu! ? Like, I can breeze through normal with no problems whatsoever, it's not even fun, but hard is just way too difficult for me, I lose almost instantly, which isn't fun either.

You just have to have a large variety of maps. Since difficulty in Osu is very variable, especially when you get to the harder difficulties, you just need to play a lot of maps until you find some where the hard difficulties aren't that big of a step up from the normal difficulties.

also this is usually true in some cases:
Low BPM normals are easier
High BPM normals are harder
Low BPM hards are easier
High BPM hards are harder
Low BPM insanes are easier
High BPM insanes are harder
it doesn't always follow that rule, but it's the same with pretty much every rhythm game
you could always turn on Hard Rock mod (HR), or DoubleTime (DT) to increase the difficulty of normals. But i don't recommend it as it usually makes the song/map waaay worse
going through my list and sorting everything by difficulty (which uses internal star difficulty)(and is also pretty inaccurate) i found some where i find the hards to be fairly easy hards to ease you into other ones. basically in order of difficulty:
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/193469
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/214235
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/251352
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/243823
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/279773 - doubles, lots of repeating sliders
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/176547 - even though this one is pretty slow, it's still pretty hard simply for having a very large amount of spacing
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/222342 - introduces triples, and has some jumps in it
i could probably find more but i only have what i've gotten from FP matches left

Exactly. I still have fun with Normals but their not much of a challenge in general since I can get at least A's (mainly S or SS) on way over 90% of them.

You are a god my friend, I'll try these out later.
Here are some hard ones I have passed off he top of my head:
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/149320
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/21582
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/121527
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/143362 - Samahs hard is what I beat
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/29807 - Ami-Hard
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/96436
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/69992
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/87616
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/130370
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/106498
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/26966
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/59133
Well those are all the hards I beat, a lot are 4.5 stars though which is what a lot of normals are so yeah, easy hards gogogo
Anyone notice the difficulty star rating in the website changed? Like insanes are now at most 3.8-ish stars and hards are at most 2.5 stars
Anyways on topic of the transition from normal to hard :
Although, I have done it pretty horribly and honestly, not only did it take me forever and no one should even try it if they wanna get good, the way I did it is to do normals with DT + HR, while poking hards and insanes occasionally just for the sake of it.
Eventually, because someone in the osu megathread linked it, I decided to try the hard difficulty on this song. Managing to get halfway through it was the point where I actually was able to get B's and stuff on hard difficulties.
Which is when I moved on to other hard songs.
Transition from hard to insane was just playing in multiplayer matches though.
Though, reading through how I did it, you're much better just sticking to HeroicPillow's suggestions. I don't even know what I am doing half the time :v:
Go in insane map MP matches, they have good maps 90% of the time.
Then play those maps until good

What really trips me up is when there are hold notes that go back and forth and then back into taps and holds. My brain just can't cope with it and I just end up spamming keys and hoping I get enough 100's to survive.
However I think I'm getting a little better at hard's now, the slow ones at least. I tried this earlier and would die instantly, maybe 2 hours later I got this:

I hate you, give me your fingers.
Worst maps are the Hards with as many notes as a Normal but you can see the hitcircle a full two seconds in advance. Other tell-tale signs of one "these" maps is ridiculously small hitcircles (with a full second of waiting but only a 20 pixel gap between each) that drain insane amounts of health and a ludicrous accuracy requirement. There's also sliders that you see a long way coming but the moment you hit it, it's flying to the other side of the screen faster than your hand can physically accelerate. Sometimes you get a shitload of notes but the outer circle takes fucking foreeeeever to reach the hitcircle. Also, repeating sliders with whistles.
Here are my least favourite hard maps of all time that should be burned at the stake because they are a bastardization of the great songs they represent and absolutely no fun to play at all.
