aaaa help, my hand
Worst maps are the Hards with as many notes as a Normal but you can see the hitcircle a full two seconds in advance. Other tell-tale signs of one "these" maps is ridiculously small hitcircles (with a full second of waiting but only a 20 pixel gap between each) that drain insane amounts of health and a ludicrous accuracy requirement. There's also sliders that you see a long way coming but the moment you hit it, it's flying to the other side of the screen faster than your hand can physically accelerate. Sometimes you get a shitload of notes but the outer circle takes fucking foreeeeever to reach the hitcircle. Also, repeating sliders with whistles.
Here are my least favourite hard maps of all time that should be burned at the stake because they are a bastardization of the great songs they represent and absolutely no fun to play at all.

Yes to everything you said. Fuck maps like that.
Also I think I just broke my wrist.

I think I'll try and make a video of the replay even though it's bad but this is by far the hardest and most insane song I have beaten so fuck it.

Hey presto!

protip: all standard maps ranked before 2011 are shit, with very few exceptions
Did something happen that changed that?
no, shit maps still get through
the ranking process and overall standards just improved to the point that they became less frequent
Old maps are shit cause they all like follow this really weird melody/beat thing that makes no sense and there's no fun to be had with your cursor arm. It's just following a line of notes, that's it. Barely any jumps, barely any squares and triangles, barely any streams, barely anything.
Just barebones.
You can hate on difficult patterns as much as you want but man, those are like 80% of the fun of the game.
Many, many old maps are exactly the opposite, but most share a single common denominator: bad mappers
whether they don't map to the beat, they add extra stuff for literally 0 reason (other than artificial difficulty), or they simply just don't map good, the end result is the same: a bad map by a bad mapper
old maps are very particular for ridiculously out of place, ultra-fast triples and retardedly long streams, and old insanes can range from ridiculously easy (modern hard) to absolutely terrifyingly bullshit (modern 146,000 star rating)

also wide flurries of awful maps mapped with circle size at the smallest possible, because fuck you that's why

My entire experience with Stepmania in one sentence.
I just got over 20pp for getting this 1 note off SS. What.

pp is weird like that, sometimes it feels like giving you tons of points, other times it doesn't give you anything. Most of the points come from the song's max combo though so since you fully comboed the song, that is why.
Oh and the rules by which they are calculated seem to change every fucking day so if you suddenly lose some pp don't be surprised
pay it no heed, that 20pp will likely disappear with the next recalculation
along with most of the pp I'm actually building up now :(
My aim in life is to SS this

b-but my precious pp :'( I hope I don't lose a lot, I feel like I made way too much progress yesterday.
you probably won't, it seems to be long time players (and high rankers in general, who have lots of scores to recalculate) that are getting hit hardest by the recalculations
also, GEE I WONDER WHAT IS GOING ON HERE

This upped me from 379 to 403. I feel like a dirty cheater.

I hope not, my aim at the start was to get to under 1k in the UK and already after 9 days I'm at #1,879. Watch out #1,878, you're next...
I can't even seem to be able to gain pp at all now, no matter what I do. S an easy song, S a hard song, A an insane, nothing ever changes. It's stuck at 693 and that's it :(
I really wish there was some sort of a documentation that'd atleast explain what affects it, that's actually kept up to date.
i've been at rank 101K for forever now. i didn't even change up or down thanks to any recalculations, my standard rank is just the single constant
i got like 1 PP during the most recent osu match, so i think i'm at 422pp now??
i stopped caring about it a long time ago tbh; i just have fun clicking circles
What the hell is with this game. I have spent the last 2 days trying to learn to alternate on and off on some harder parts and I couldn't do it for the life of me, my fingers get confused and it's just chaos.
I have a bath, come back and alternating is so easy. What is wrong with me. It's the same with some songs too, struggle for ages, leave it and come back and SS it first try.
Alternate everything forever
yeah yeah w/e not a full combo but i cant do those fucking 260 bpm streams or whatever they are.
cue jesse: "alternating is for literal mongoloids who deserve no life ever"
Not an actual quote but close enough
edit: i wonder how this break is gonna treat me. I'll be able to play again in april lol.

Trying to stick to something repeatedly just results in you eventually trying to do it off memory. Not to mention mentally and physically tiring yourself out from playing something over and over.
Alternating is shitty and you should never do it until you're very good at single tapping. It hinders improvement so much, it's like a false sense of improving speed and people stick to maps that are "fast" despite them actually being very slow when alternating. That doesn't always happen but 9/10 times it does.

What if I've alternated since I started and here I am playing insanes with HR and I don't know how to singletap? :v:
Not sure if this was mentioned, but don't forget about the BIT.TRIP games! I love these games with a passion and they contain deep hidden messages about humanity that I find interesting, and wouldn't expect it to be in a rhythm game. In my opinion, game order from hardest to easiest is CORE, RUNNER, Runner2, BEAT, FATE, VOID. But if you want to follow the story line, it goes BEAT, CORE, VOID, RUNNER, Runner2, FATE, and then FLUX (not yet released on Steam).
remember that whole "shit ranked osu maps" discussion we had a bit ago?
Try and guess what year this map was released (don't cheat)

side note: the map starts within half a second of loading, with no breathing/skip room.
[sp]march 6th 2014. how even[/sp] .
even if everything else is shit about this map, at least the taiko oni diff for it is pretty fun.
(not good enough to judge inner/ura oni maps, so maybe they're okay too??)

How do the taiko slider things work?
Is it one beat for all the dots? Or just mash? What effects the score?
In any case I don't like them.

anywhere from 1/8th to 1/4th beat, and yes you want to hit all the dots if possible
score is bonus points and don't break combo as long as you hit one
don't mash

When I came back from my break a while back I was not able to hold 170 bpm streams consistently, barely 200 bpm bursts.
A week later, with casual playing, I held 200 bpm streams and burst 240.
I could not see a wall where I was standing yet.
[editline]11th March 2014[/editline]
Hinders improvement is a bit silly to say, I find it very hard to imagine I would have improved like that in 2-3 days were I singletapping.
oh god this entire week
So I've been spending the past, like, three days downloading every single beatmap pack for osu!, and when it finally finishes I put everything in from pack 170 and onwards. After waiting for the game to process all these and playing a few songs, I realize ~4,500 songs is a bit much for finding songs I like. So then I spend something between 5-7 hours going through every one of those, deleting ones I wasn't likely to play much. Looking at my song count now, it's...336.
Something tells me I'm not really part of the target audience of osu!'s beatmap makers, especially considering I pretty much got rid of like, 99% of the Japanese songs. :v: Love the game though.

I am so torn. I'm sad that I didn't get it first time today but I got so close which shows I'm improving (I usually died at 1:38) so that's good.
Still haven't got double tapping down at all though and I'm unsure if I even need it to get to hard levels, I'm getting mixed views from everywhere I look.
EDIT: FINALLY an end song improvement to show at least a little bit of "your getting better bro" to me
[t]http://puu.sh/7rouC.jpg[/t]
This after getting better but still failing at like 5 other songs though. Woe is me.

Why would you bother spending that much time making sure you only have songs you will use? Unless you have EXTREMELY limited hard drive space, and I mean extremely, then there is no reason imo.
EDIT2: Sorry to be spamming but christ, that ending man.
When you've got multiple stacked sliders like that it's way easier to alternate. Leaves less chance of releasing too early since you can basically hold down both buttons at once.
Did this earlier. Rank #16,XXX here I come!

mapping fluidly is harder than it first appears!!!
still, almost done with the basic mapping woo (ecksdee already knows what I'm talking about)
