CK2 Dev Diary #16: Man's inhumanity to man
Hello and welcome back to another DD about The Reaper's Due! Ha! I can finally use the name! If all is going to plan you should be reading this while I am on my third, and sadly final, week of vacation, so I may or may not show up to answer questions. For this DD we are getting back to the core values of The Reaper's Due: Death and Suffering! Being a prisoner is never a fun experience, and frankly, with The Reaper's Due it only gets worse. We have added several fairly unpleasant ways to interact with your captives: Humiliate. The prisoner is degraded in some fashion; such as being tarred and feathered, or forced to do a “walk of shame”. This also causes them to lose prestige and be generally looked down on. Torture. The prisoner is caused a certain amount of pain; such as being whipped, or stretched on the rack. May cause them to become Stressed or even Depressed, and can cause you to lose the Kind trait. Mutilate. Only available to rulers with certain traits, such as Cruel or Impaler, this causes the permanent loss of a body part. May lead to you becoming Cruel if you are not already, and can cause them to gain Stressed or even Lunatic. Bad poetry. Rulers with the Poet trait may deploy their very worst poems against a prisoner. While a comparatively mild punishment, it nonetheless has a slight chance to drive them mad. Consume. Rulers who are either Possessed or Lunatic and also have the Cannibal modifier may simply eat their prisoners. If you haven’t disabled fantasy content, this may lead to you “gaining the power” of your victim. All of these options, besides Consume, release the victim afterwards as they are considered to be their punishment, and while you choose the category you do not choose the exact method. Needless to say, your former prisoner will not think kindly of you after any of these punishments, and in the more extreme cases their close family may also be outraged. Of course, sometimes a mere punishment is not enough and you simply have to Execute your prisoner. Well, we have added content for this eventuality too! You still simply press the Execute button, as before, but the actual execution method employed is chosen from a list based on your location/culture/religion/traits as well as the imprison reason you have on your prisoner, their religion/gender/traits, and things. Different execution methods come with different death reasons, and as you may have heard in an earlier DD, different death sounds. We have 31 execution methods, including Hanging, Crushing, Sawing, and Bear. It’s all in an easily moddable file too, just in case modders think we have been insufficiently creative. I should also mention that with the 2.6 patch it is no longer possible to escape from House arrest unless someone with the Intrigue focus breaks you out, so if for some reason you want to be nice to your prisoners they are no longer virtually guaranteed to escape. Since Death is a big theme for The Reaper's Due, we have also added several reactions events to the death of your lovers, friends, and rivals. For the first two, these can result in things like you turning to drink, finding a new friend, taking comfort in the arms of another, or finding a keepsake of them. For the latter, you may miss having a rival and start a new feud, resolve to become a better person, or if you are a particular type of person you might sneak out and desecrate their corpse. We don’t judge! That’s all for now. Next week I’ll be back at work and writing these “live” again, so I’ll decide the topic closer to the time. It's quite possible the subject will be cats though.
Some of that flavor text should be part of the patch IMO

What the hell is that
An abomination of the Lord that must be cleansed with colonial hellfire.
This DLC actually seems like its shaping up to be pretty good
What the hell is that
A randomly generated Vicky 2 scenario. I got 27 of the buggers now. I can share if anyone wants to.
I was interested in EU4 after Total War kinda slipped out of favor for me (spam heavy infantry and win campaign, dang it warscape engine), and after trying out the demo version I thought I might pick it up as it's a lot deeper and I can survive not seeing the battles themselves. However upon looking the DLC I was pretty disappointed and was wondering what I should do as I'm debating with myself. I've heard that without any DLC the base game is rather bare bones but the DLC asking price is absurd, currently at $ 222.59 including the price of the game. I figure I could slim down that price by not getting portrait DLCs and the like (Looking at you, ship model packs) what are the non-critical DLCs? and which DLCs are seen as pretty much crucial for a good game experience? New developement, I picked up the base game eu4 for $10.00 (still gotta buy the dlc seperately though) Agree: pick up the dlc now Disagree: wait for a sale Funny: just ignore the dlc
I'd never have bought EU4 if I didn't have rich friends with all the DLCs.
The DLC costs are easier to manage if you bought the game early and are just buying one every few months, but seriously at this point EU4 needs some sort of complete edition that lets you buy the full game and DLC at a reduced cost. Also I hate the way that "content packs" are named. It really makes it sound like it's more than just a unit skin pack.

What I would be okay with would be, say, an "EUIV: Exploration Edition" that has CoP+ED on it, or "EUIV: Blood and Iron Edition" that has AoW+CS, etc. etc.
I have given up on EU4 now. I haven't played it for a year. I have no idea about any expansions now and I think it's too much to get into the new expansions.
Its sad, Pdox was one of the last companies to offer full blown expansions for their games, and it made me love them. But starting with CK2 they not only transitioned to the DLC model, they went full on in knowing they can take advantage of their loyal playerbase by making a shit ton of lazy dlc.
EUIV and CK2 suffer mainly from the fact that the DLCs and base games never drop in price. Outside of the occasional sale (which is increasingly less often), the games remain at $40 and the DLCs from $5-20 a pop without changing. If they want to encourage future sales, they have to drop the game's price at some point in the future. CK2 is still full price since its release 4 years ago.
It does seem like paradox is intent on squandering their success. I don't know many people who are happy with the way Paradox prices their games and does their DLC's, and a lot of the people I know have lost trust and are less and less willing to spend money on it.
This makes me wonder. If they hold up with this DLC, people become dissatisfied with will mean less purchases, less revenue overall, would it just make them push the DLC bullshit even further and send them into a death spiral of sorts? I've yet to see a company revert back from the DLC style of sale
At the very least it would be nice if Pdox would let players vote on two or three "essential" dlc and bunch the winners into a reasonably priced package.

If anyone plays HOI3, is anyone interested in a New Cold War mod, i've made? Set in the near-future with a European Federation and Russia.

I've gathered up all the main DLC, plus some of the cosmetic stuff (character faces shit), but again, everything I either got when it was on sale or when I could scout out cheaper deals on other sites and could grab it at a discount (coupon codes helped too). It's fucking ridiculous how expensive this stuff gets after a while though, and the fact like you said that they don't bother reducing prices either years after they've launched their games doesn't help matters at all. I will not buy EU4 in the foreseeable future because it plus all of its important DLCs (Art of War, Mare Nostrum, Res Publica, etc.) together cost something like $155. And that's just ridiculous. I'm also not too thrilled about their nickle-and-dime schemes with all the little content for their games. "That'll be $2 for access to this music/graphics pack. By the way, we've got a dozen others for the same game that add unique content too. Buy those please." Yeah, no. Gaming is a hobby, and hobbies require money... I understand that... but it's supposed to be cheaper than most hobbies, and nothing digital as far as I'm concerned is worth $155 of my money. I can't spend that much. It's not like I'm the only consumer out there who feels this way either. You're pissing a lot of people off, loyal customers included, when you do this. But whatever, I don't run the company. And I can convince myself well enough when I look at the price tag that I don't really need it/it's not worth saving up for and buying ever.
If anyone plays HOI3, is anyone interested in a New Cold War mod, i've made? Set in the near-future with a European Federation and Russia.
Does it actually have good lua scripts for the AI?
Does it actually have good lua scripts for the AI?
If you think vanilla scripts are bad, then probably not.
Or just lower the price of 4 year old games and DLC :v:
When the DLC collectively costs 5x the price I paid for the base game, it makes me not want to bother buying them at all
