Weird, it keeps crashing when I start it up.

Looks like they will finally simulate Rollo and his band of Northmen settling in Normandy.
Fuck yeah.

I would like if they recorded and live commentated the whole thing, but this is the closest to that we will get from Pdox it seems.

For someone who calls himself "One of Paradoxes harshest critic" Arumba doesn't seem to be harsh to them at all.
Also that day and night cycle looks terrible please allow us to turn it off in the options

Are there less provinces in HOI4 compared to HOI3? I really can't tell but i think there are.

I'm not sure, but the amount you can see depends on the zoom level like the other games.

He's made like 3 videos that are nothing but critiques of EUIV, and many of them have actually ended up in the game.

Not a fan of the new portrait outlines though, they're kinda non-descript. I preferred the original ones.
So... after the extended time mod decided to crash down on me and not being able to play byzantium in its peak I decided to play it at the start as ironman to see how hard it was. To be honest, I think its a bit overrated on the difficulty. As long as you get poland and/or Austria to help you you can win the first war really easy and grab some good provinces from the ottomans. Its all about luck aswell I guess.

This is an old pic now (since Im currently in the early 1620s and got way more provinces now) but this shows how in just 150 years you can turn the tide really easy and wreck the Ottomans.
Best thing to do is just block the Strait between Greece and Anatolia.
Problem is that you cant do that in the same way you could before the update. Now you get some shitty event called Byzantine Navy Strength that makes your fleet cost a lot more. so you cannot block the strait in the first war unless you want to go bankrupt in the early game.

germany looks the same as HoI3, as for the nightcycle maybe some of the effects are unnecessary like the searchlights but the game goes hour to hour not day to day and there are penalty's and bonuses for attacking at night depending on if you have night fighting equipment unlocked, also from mid 38 you usually use lower timescales and the effect will be less drastic
maybe the gameplay in HoI4 is faster though, in 3 you spend ages trying to manage the OOB to maximize your potential, i didnt see any of that in the video's from that event which i think is a good thing

"there will be NATO symbols there for those that prefer those. And probably an option to use NATO symbols instead of great-looking-informative-paradox-style ones."
[editline]26th June 2015[/editline]
Oh yeah, Lend Lease in HOI4, you do get the equipment being leased to you
They don't convert into your countries equivalent.

I think I've figured out what the new portrait outlines are. Tassels now indicate government type, whereas ring/gems show rank.
Bronze = barony level
Silver = count level
Silver + blue gems = duke level
Gold = king level
Gold w/ purple gems = emperor level
And as for the tassel colors, I think green = iqta, blue = feudal, gold = nomad, darker red = tribal, pinkish = republic, white = theocracy. I've figured this out from analyzing the screenshots. Do you agree?

pdox should really get around to implementing cadet branches in ck2 also for horse lords
i hope ur being sarcastic

That quote was from Johan. Not me.
NATO icons have not even been made yet, that is why there are no pictures.
I have to agree with the 'informative' part though.
It is a lot easier to see an armoured division from a Tank icon at a glance then a rectangle with some lines in it.
Are you kidding? If you can't figure out what the symbols mean that's on you, it doesn't make them any less informative.
That is why they have a NATO counter alternative for thoes who prefer that.
My point still stands, NATO style icons are just as informative as paradox's icons. Paradox is probably just going to encourage people use their icons so they can sell more model packs.
NATO style icons are just as informative as paradox's icons.
But not as easy to grasp as a helmet or a horse. They're trying to make more accessible to a wider audience. HOI series is a niche within a niche.
Paradox is probably just going to encourage people use their icons so they can sell more model packs.
How? The icons will probably just replace the helmet symbol and that on the existing icon. The models will still be there.
They sold sprite packs for HOI3 as well.

It remains to be seen if this is true or if the game has been dumbed down to the point where it shouldn't be a HoI game anymore. I bought them for their complexity, not the hand holding.
It's a shame there isn't other modern military GSG's, War Games are fun and all but managing a country is even more so.
Have you watched the footage from the Press gathering? The stuff in the dev diaries as well. Still seems pretty complicated to me. Simpler doesn't mean dumbed down.
What paradox keeps trying to emphasize is HOI isn't a GSG its a primarily war game. That is why they start at 1936 and most of the detail is going into Europe and Asia.
great-looking-informative-paradox-style ones."
Ah yes the informative "Helmet" symbol that tells me if it's infantry, marines, mountain, airborne, militia, motorized, mechanized or garrison yes the helmet will tell me SO much!
They have simplified transporters however.
You still need to build transports and have enough to use them, but units will auto-embark when moving out from a sea port if I understand it correctly.

If they say they're informative, they must have enough information that is needed. You need more just click on the unit.
This is a dev quote.

If it honestly takes you more than ten minutes to grasp which counters are infantry, armor, or aircraft then you would probably be better off playing Total War or something.

I assume "NATO counters" means counters in the style of literally every other HOI game. Still including the models with counters selected utterly defeats the point.
It more then likely means the icons will be replaced with NATO symbols.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if they added a slider/toggle for them like in HOI3.

With HOI2 and HOI3, AFAIK it never tells you what those symbols mean, at all. Maybe the HOI3 tutorial did. You should not have to click on each unit to know what they are and memorize them when a simple helmet or tank icon tells you what you need to know.
[editline]28th June 2015[/editline]
Ah I'm confusing counters with symbols again.
They won't have counters like in the old games, they won't stack. What they're doing is making NATO style Icons for the current in game counters.
[editline]28th June 2015[/editline]
Oh and the Counters don't vanish when you zoom in like in HOI3, they're still there.

You mean you had to actually learn something to play the game? How horrible. Now tell me, how are players going to know the difference between a helmet for a marine, an airborn unit, or a regular infantry unit? A light tank from a medium or heavy tank? Or tactical bombers from interceptors or CAGs? You're still going to have to memorize different symbols one way or the other. Say what you want about making the game more accessible but all this is is removing a feature that was widely used by many older fans. If you really are to lazy to learn the different counters then you could just play with the crappy sprites.
In the grand scheme of the game it's a minor point, but still annoying.
