4 km/h? The hell is slowing them down so much?
Why are you fighting over this lmao
Anyone can use just whatever they want, why do you need to force the fact that NATO symbols are more informative to others
Yes, NATO symbols are more informative, they were designed for that
But I still use pdox symbols every now and then, just a goddamn preference, if I want information I take the liberty of moving the mouse and pressing left click on the unit
I'm not forcing anybody to do shit, I'm arguing against the original statement that the pdox ones are more informative.
Maybe its just me but HOI4 looks way less fun then HOI3. It looks worse too although this is because I really liked the simple style HOI3 had.
Just seems like it has been made much more casual in terms of overall strategy, some features look nice but overall I am displeased with the direction they are going.
The new division thing looks nice though.
Oh well, HOI3 will always be there.
You should watch Arumba's video I linked last page
It's honestly not that hard to learn the meaning of NATO counters, they are way way way WAY more flexible than the dumb simple podcat counters, e.g. a crossed box is infantry, a crossed box with a triangle in the middle is mountain infantry, a crossed box with 'wheels' and a triangle in the middle is motorised mountain infantry. Simple. If you actually play with them on, you'll pick it up in seconds.
As for Arumba's video, I didn't like it too much, it just seems like Paradox invited more 'casual' players to sit down and invade Poland with Maus tanks and Field Marshal Rommel. He didn't really seem too informed, but oh well, this is just someone who's a little annoyed at the increasing simplification of the game into something that resembles Total War in order to generate more sales.
However, I absolutely love the equipment and upgrade aspects of divisions.
It remains to be seen if this is true or if the game has been dumbed down to the point where it shouldn't be a HoI game anymore. I bought them for their complexity, not the hand holding.
It's a shame there isn't other modern military GSG's, War Games are fun and all but managing a country is even more so.
HOI3 was good but the managing of units was a nightmare. Especially managing planes and ships. Trying to command a front as big as say the eastern front was also another nightmare. Sure you could put it to AI control but where was the fun in that?

Well you also got to understand that video was recorded during a 20 Player MP match and they only had a few hours to play. Though I believe they were given press copies to practice with before hand.
I'm sure if he was able to sit down and play a SP match where he could pause and change the speed it would be different.
Arumba is the kind of guy in EU4 who tries to break the game. He looks at the numbers and does the math and all that. I don't think hes casual. Maybe casual when it comes to HOI series.
As I said earlier, HOI seems to be a niche series. I don't see a lot big name Paradox GSG youtubers playing it.
If you were to watch Quil18 or Arumba's SP videos of the other games, they get pretty into it.
Battle Plans in HOI4 seem to be an improvement to AI control in HOI3. But it still needs player intervention. You still need to give them the supplies, build the troops and all that.
4 km/h? The hell is slowing them down so much?
They just had second thoughts about the whole war thing but they still want to make it look like they're going.
The only thing i don't like in HOI4 is the map, that awful day/night transition (seriously why do we even need something like that?) and the commander/leader pictures are now 3D or paintings or whatever instead of real life pictures like in HOI3, though i guess that can be changed but still.
All those planes flying around on the map also looked stupid, they were like birds circling over a small area. I can imagine them getting pretty confusing and annjoying for the player in late game. Just have a small notification that an area was bombed or something and that's it. Not sure what else, i'm not a big fan of all those big pre requirements to make decisions like the anschluss or so either, they should have kept that system that's in HOI3 and improved on it.
That tech tree looks ok for vanilla game, but i'm used to the massive tech tree in Black Ice
Well as far as I can tell, some of the leader portraits are drawings of actual pictures of them. Goering's portrait is of him and a Lion Cub
https://www.google.ca/search?q=Goering+%2B+Lion+cub&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=955&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=R0KQVbjQJ8GWgwSavrWYAg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ
They probably did to make the art style consistent, instead of some colour photos and some black and white.
The Day and knight transition is so you can clearly tell it is night and day. Day and night effects your battle stats.

Then why not just keep it in the minimap like 3?
This is easier to see? Better visual feed back?

I think it looks cooler :|

The point of the game is managing your army, you're trying to change the micromanaging aspect that makes the game great. The automated fronts in HoI4 is the same as AI control as well, computers will never react as well as a human would.
Theatres are not hard to manage, you just need to get a feel for the game. There's buttons to select Corps + Divisions and its easy to climb through the hierarchy esp. with TFH

I personally felt like HOI4 was more tedium than game. I played it a bit, but after a while I always ended up just quitting because I didn't want to deal with the micro and unexplained mechanics, like running out of supply for reasons that I couldn't figure out.
Personally, I totally understand that some very small number of people enjoy that high level micro, but I would think that the vast majority doesn't. By changing it they're making a game fun for a whole lot more people while making it less fun for a tiny number, seems like a decent trade to me.

Well to be honest, i didn't have much of a problem with managing ground units, but when it came to ships and planes... Oh boy... The horrors.
I was completely lost on where to put them. Same for paratroopers and marines, altough marines were a bit better because you could transport corps, army HQs etc... But not for paratroopers and when i put them under Corps or army or whatever, they were constantly out of range.
I found planes to be a nussiance than anything and never really bothered with them other than bombing stuff. There was no AI control to them so say you couldn't automate every single one of your fighters or ground support planes with a simple click of a button. You had to manually activate each squadron and choose a certain range, mission etc... Maybe i'm missing something here, if so please explain how i can make this easier.
Speaking of assiging them, i found that to be the most tedious of all. For example, there was no easy and precise way to select which provinces i wanted to bomb, why couldn't i just click on a province to select it for bombing? You had to manually set your range and sometimes it went too far, and i had to fuck about with all those different sliders, region selection and all that shit. Just allow me to point and click on provinces dammit! And if you weren't careful, your planes would fly until they ran out of fuel or got shot down. This is like Dwarf Fortress level of micromanaging.
Ships and submarines were somewhat fine but not perfect either.
What i also had trouble was deciding how many planes or ships should i send out, like one heavy bomber or submarine meant how many exactly? Should i put my planes and submarines in 5s or 3s or what? Ships had that hull rating and positioning that i know i had to keep at 0% but other than that, nothing. Submarines didn't have that so i had no clue if sending a stack of 10 or 3 submarines were any different.
Also another thing is how you could only deploy one fucking unit at a time. When i made 20 planes, i had to drag and drop each one. Twenty. Fucking. Times. Then there was combining them, selecting the ones you wanted and so much more that god damn mass deploying and organizing planes and ships was such a pain in the fucking ass when more than 30+ were waiting to be deployed. And that's just planes. Sometimes i had 30 planes and like 50 submarines and 30 ships waiting to be deployed. That's at least a 110 clicks, but probably twice as much. I literally spent sometimes 20-25 minutes deploying and properly organizing them and by the end, my hand was aching from moving around the mouse so much. Ground units were no better either. There was no way to mass deploy all your units that finished at the same time.
Is the AI control required in HOI4? If it is it really should be optional for those of use that want manual control.

You can still manually control the troops. AI is tied to the battle plans system.
If you make battleplans plans the troops assigned to it get a prepared bonus when they act them out. AFAIK they get them even when manually ordered to attack, not just with AI.

Are the old legends true? Could they finally return?

I see what you mean now, the region selection for Planes and Ships is very complex for no reason and it could be simplified like you said. Statistics are a bit obfuscated, there are ALOT of things that are important for ships. Naval battles are based on unit positioning but the most important thing is speed, units enter battle phases at different times and if they don't arrive in sync they will get torn apart by other fleets.
Submarines function on their visibility rating, you want the best firepower for lowest visibility in most cases 3-5 subs is good. They become less important late war with SONAR and Hydrophone techs and up teched destroyers and cruisers.
Spec ops I always assign to my Theater command so they receive bonuses at crazy range, Paratroopers are most useful in assault fortified positions while other troops are attacking (like in real life) if you drop them in the back the reserves will just envelop them.
Bombers and interceptors should NEVER be mixed, interceptors should be in 10-12 stacks and on Air Superiority if you want to bomb enemy countries, the goal is to keep them in their airbases repairing. Bombers should be 4-6 stacks and not separate, you want the AA damage to be mitigated among the bulk of them. Never underestimate auxiliary forces like Navy and Airforce, they're crucial to beat great powers.
Interceptors can be assigned to AI control ( I wouldn't personally, you get the most out of it doing it yourself ) but bombing is best used manually, you're not meant to play that game at x4 or x5 whilst fighting, at most x3.
You can abuse Paratroops by landing them on important cities.
At least I think, I've seen rules in planned MP games saying not to use Paratroopers to conquer countries.

Yep, this instantly annihilates their stockpiles on their capital and resets it to 0 and gives you all of theirs.
You should have garrisons anyway in cities so reduce revolt risk and get max resources.
While my game last night shows that even if I fully optimise buildup for Sweden, I am locked to about 50 divisions, even with total war recruitment laws.
However... Rockets and Nukes are not anywhere near balanced yet.. But its damn fun to start an invasion against an unholy alliance of Nazis and Commies with reigning down 20 nukes on all major troop concentrations. and then another wave a few weeks later when my armies have advanced..
But no, being able to build 250 nukes by 1947 as Sweden should not be possible after next week. (At least not after Wednesday mornings MP test....)
Wait a second.. Nationalist Sweden?!
Are nations getting name changes based on Government? Or is Johan being funny with localization edits?

What mapmode is that? Who's owning what exactly?
That appears to be the default map mode. If you look north you can see the Blue of Sweden.
Germany is grey, but the light from the nukes is obscuring it.
You can see the Red of either the Soviets or the Polish to the east. More then likely the soviets based on the year, plus Johan's post said the Germans and the Soviets were allied.
The buttons on the top right are the map modes.
[editline]28th June 2015[/editline]
Flag = Diplomatic
Gas Can = Supplies maybe?
Fire = More then likely revolt risk
Hand = Diplomatic Relations?
Box = That could be supplies as well hm
I wonder what the last blank square is.
for curiousity's sake what did EU and HOI 1 look like
[I]January 1, 1700: Cumberland has died.
January 1, 1700: Morrison has died.
January 1, 1700: Parsons has died.
January 1, 1700: Rogers has died.
