Which is a great thing. Because while I loved Amnesia and appreciated Soma, the ability to actually fight back was sorely missing from most Frictional games. So if I can have an experience like that, except this time I have a body horror big iron on my hip, that's the game I'm going to play. Hell, having to decide whether it's worthwhile shooting something is a layer of tension that is worth having.
crossposting this from the kickstarter news thread
there isn't any dialogue. if you haven't already you might want to consider reading through the kickstarter's comments page. everyone is asking one of the lead devs questions about the game and he's been answering them nonstop since the campaign began i did a quick skim through it, probably missed stuff -part 1 is currently estimated to take 6-8 hours to finish -no dialogue or even text outside of the main menu, there is a story tho it's ultimately a 'what you make of it' type deal, but there is still more to the storytelling than just "walk around and shoot stuff". kinda vague but we'll see i guess. -each playthrough's story will likely be 'different' in someway for the players. they're being pretty vague about this but sounds like you maybe make some choices through the game, or maybe they just mean it in the sense of what you take away from it. -you can sprint, but you can't duck/crawl or jump (shame) -there are more guns, they just aren't ready to reveal them all yet -will be graphics setting options but they just haven't reached that point of optimization yet -focus is exploration, puzzle solving and fighting is secondary and will shift depending on your playstyle/the level you're on -the VR stretchgoal is for a separate level just for VR mode. they can't do the entire game as VR. -you save by reaching various save stations throughout the game world -there will also be a 'prologue' released ahead of release at some point. backers at tier 2 and above get it earlier than others. -the demo will be what you saw in the gameplay trailer -the artbook is estimated to be roughly 64 pages
also this just went up: http://www.pcgamer.com/behind-the-beautifully-grotesque-art-of-scorn/
I'm curious what kind of puzzle solving we'll be doing. Amnesia had forgettable arbitrary puzzles that could have been literally anything. Puzzle could also mean figuring out which of your abilities to use to get past an environmental obstacle, like Prey, except you can't jump so... I'm skeptical when game devs release pretty trailers without being specific about what you'll actually be doing. It sounds like they're not even sure what the gameplay is going to be but they're asking for a bunch of money, again.

There's no clear picture yet of what the end goal is meant to be sure, but it at least gave an basic of what you'll be doing with that example of working some goofy machine to upgrade your 'keycard' while shooting/fleeing from some monsters. Also part 1 is basically done already pending more polish and potential expansion so it's safe to assume they know what the gameplay is going to be at this point. regardless the demo will hopefully clear things up a bit more.
I hope we get to fight a giant penis monster
I hope we get to fight a giant penis monster
It would be weird if you didn't get to fight a giant penis monster. Personally I hope we get to fight a Puritan man with modest clothing.
Nearly €124K, 20 days to go. It's been a slow growth, but it still looks like it's going to make it. Not so sure about stretch goals, but by this point it's looking like it'll break €150K at the very least.
This game has The Flesh That Hates written all over it. I'm looking forward to it.
Though I have this weird feeling that the flesh doesn't hate you in this game. Hell, it probably loves you, and wants you to be a part of it. Or it could not give a shit as you pant and sweat running through its corridors.
Demo's coming within 10 days.
I wonder if the demo is going to include any new gameplay or if it's going to be the same environment in the trailer. Even if it's nothing new, it'll be a good chance for a bunch of people to benchmark how it performs.

Hell, having to decide whether it's worthwhile shooting something is a layer of tension that is worth having.
Sorry for off-topic but one thing I loved about the first Penumbra game was how you had to actually swing that hammer around to fight. It made things feel really frantic and terrifying. I wish more games did that. I keep confusing this game with Agony. I'm looking forward to both. I really like portrayals of hell in video games/media, book 1 of the Divine Comedy (and later the game Dante's Inferno) was one of my favorites and these both remind me of that a lot, even if Scorn isn't meant to actually be hell
I'm in two minds about how it worked. On the one hand I love the idea of actually swinging something around. But on the other hand, I don't like it when it locks up your ability to look around. It's one of the few problems I have with Metroid Prime, despite me loving that game. However, this mechanic wouldn't have that problem if you're using a VR headset and those weird spoon-hoop controllers, since you'd be able to aim independently of where you're looking. On the flipside, however, you wouldn't be able to walk around without feeling nauseous, and I'm not sure if teleportation is a good movement mechanic for a horror game. Unless you consume an elixir of ginger and peppermint. Those two substances help deal with motion sickness, from what I've heard.
Never heard of the ginger+peppermint thing, but I do swear by ginger when my stomach is bothering me Contrary to popular belief walking in VR can be done to work fine. Onward has a mechanic where you "walk" and it does feel a little strange but it's too slow to make you nauseous. As long as it's slow-paced, like what movement in this game already seems to be, it helps the motion sickness a lot
It's a theory I haven't been able to test yet. Peppermint's apparently good for nausea, and ginger is similarly helpful. So in theory if one combined them in the right ratio of ginger to peppermint, at the right concentration, you could potentially have a potent anti-nausea recipe.
They're close. Are they going to make?
They're close. Are they going to make?
make it? god yes, especially since the demo isn't even out yet for a few more days and will just give them another surge of donations. the only question now is how many stretch goals they'll hit. I'd say the VR one is a given, but god I wish that shit wasn't the first stretch goal.
Looking at it, I'm not sure they'll make stretch goals, but given that they're only 8k away from getting what they need, with 12 days before the deadline, and that the demo may potentially bring in more donations, I'll be pretty shocked if they don't AT LEAST break 150k. Also, I have a feeling that if Jim Sterling does a video where he goes through the demo, that'll turn some heads and draw some eyes.
Looking at it, I'm not sure they'll make stretch goals
from kicktraq: so they'd have to stick to the lowest possible donation projection, get zero bump from the demo releasing in a couple days, and somehow get another zero bump from the final days of the campaign which is where you usually see donation amounts almost comparable to the start of the campaign. So yea they're gonna hit the VR goal. The only thing in question is if they'll also hit the others.
Well, we'll see how it all pans out in the end. After a bit of number-crunching on my end, they look to be on track.
Eyyy Demo is OUT. Everyone that backed so far should be receiving their key any minute now to activate on steam. All new backers will get there's probably by tomorrow. I kinda wish the demo was just released in full but whatever. Just got my key so gonna check this out now.
I got my key, and the demo downloaded. However, I got an error that said I needed Microsoft Windows Runtime C + + 2005 or something (I don't remember exactly) and I can't run it. So that's my evening plans buggered. Anyone know how I can fix this issue? Funnily enough, I had a similar issue when trying to run Obduction way back when. I don't know whether my machine just does not like these kinds of games, or if there was something missing in the files. But if this keeps up, I might have to buy a laptop and see if I have the same problem on other machines.
could try asking on the kickstarter comments page. the dev there is usually pretty fast for answering questions (tho its like 4 am in their timezone right now so may be awhile). Getting the exact error message would help as well. That's a pretty common error in games tho, you fix it by redownloading some thing from Microsoft's website, but I can't remember what and would probably need the exact error message to find the solution
They did it, reddit! They're funded!
They did it, reddit! They're funded!
They aren't. Kickstarter is just broken and dumb when it comes to conversion rates somehow. Check the original currency count. They still need ~1.7k Euros lol. [editline]28th September 2017[/editline] also yeah the percent bar isn't filled yet either. idk how kickstarter managed this lol.
NOOOOO
Has anyone tried the demo yet? Without going into detail, is it good or not?
Has anyone tried the demo yet? Without going into detail, is it good or not?
yea it's great, loved it
Has anyone tried the demo yet? Without going into detail, is it good or not?
There's a lack of graphic options outside of resolution, and I've had a few bugs here and there, such as being killed by an invisible enemy. Other than those though, it's a great demo.
I could swear I've played game demos that don't really let you get full access to graphics options though
