• Overwatch - The world needs heroes, and Blizzard needs a TF2 game!
TF2 was $20 at launch, had mod support, community servers and custom maps. You also can get all new weapons for free using currency you get for playing, and you get access to a lot of hats easily for pocket change. Overwatch is $40 at launch, yet it will have expensive skins, no mod support, no custom maps, no community servers. And we'll possibly have to pay again to access new content. I really can't justify spending more than $20 on this, no matter how hyped I am to play. Even CoD will get mod tools and custom maps. I went ahead and bought CoD instead. I'll hold back for now, cause this is looking like it's going the way of Evolve and Titanfall.
Overwatch also has more than double the classes of TF2 and more maps than TF2 had at launch to boot
Also, no matter how bad the game is, it's a Blizzard game, so it will never go the way of Titanfall or Evolve simply by the virtue of it being a Blizzard game
I don't know why people are saying Overwatch is going to follow Titanfall and Evolve. Its a couple of exclusive cosmetics for preordering and buying special additions. I mean they even were talking about progression would unlock cosmetics and other stuff like that. They've said you would never pay for heroes and maps so what else could they make you pay for? There's no way they would add alternate weapons, it would break the game. And what is so wrong if they released cosmetics after launch that you would need to buy anyways? I will agree no custom servers and modding support sucks, but I'm hopeful they'll add at least one of these post-launch. I just don't understand how people think this game will be repetitive though. There's 21 heroes and you can use any combination of them in each match. Titanfall and Evolve failed in this regard because they had hardly any variety and the only way to get more was to grind/play for a couple hours.
Overwatch also has more than double the classes of TF2 and more maps than TF2 had at launch to boot
That just screams "More balance issues" to me. That doesn't exactly up the price-point.
I never noticed TF2 was $20 when it first came out because it was part of the clearly better The Orange Box deal. Also, TF2 doesn't have an in-game currency, lol. You can get free weapon drops or shortcut purchases. The trading economy also helps making get specific weapons easy too.
not to get too off topic here, but i've never liked the TF2 model i hate that the only ways i can get items are by waiting or trading. i'd rather have an in-game currency than have to interact with random dudes (and hope they have what i want) whenever i want a specific item. not as bad in dota since it's all cosmetics there
I don't get it. I thought Overwatch was gonna be free to play? But now you can pre purchase it?
I don't get it. I thought Overwatch was gonna be free to play? But now you can pre purchase it?
It was only speculation that it would be F2P, i much prefer this model rather than buying characters. When Hots released it would cost well over $100 to get all the characters now it would cost you about $300 without getting any skins. Overwatch has 21 characters, if they released it as f2p with buyable characters it would cost $170 going by average HoTs champion price
I will probably pass on this one. 40e for a multiplayer-only game without any progression system confirmed, I would probably get bored in a few weeks no matter how fun it was. I never bother with MP games unless there is some grind in the background, otherwise playing is pointless.

They've been very, very careful to word it in a way that leaves things vague. "All characters on release," for example has been used a few times.
"There will be no more heroes at launch. At launch its 21 heroes: what you see is what you get." Jeff said. "Whether in the future Overwatch has more heroes is sort of a TBD to us."

"A lot of this is... there's not like this master plan we know exactly what we want to try. Let's see the health of the game and where it's at. Let's see where the fans are at, and what they want."

"There's not going to be a heroes store at launch," Jeff reiterated.
This is on the panel with the game director, Jeff Kaplan. At launch is raising some red flags for me. I'm personally not throwing any money at this game until they clear this up. They could very easily kill any interest a lot of people have, and even prevent any kind of competitive scene from starting up. I don't like the idea of buying a full priced game, and then being forced to buy microtransactions to stay competitive.
I think I'm starting to understand why they haven't given a set release date because they have no clue what they're doing on the progression/skin/microtransaction side of things
I will probably pass on this one. 40e for a multiplayer-only game without any progression system confirmed, I would probably get bored in a few weeks no matter how fun it was. Are there going to be ways to acquire them other than by paying real money? JK: We don't know yet, we don't have an answer for that. Right now, the only cosmetics that are announced are those Origins skins and the pre-purchase skin. We are now on our third progression system. We yanked out the first one - that's the one that had the player powers, like for example when Reaper used Wraith Form he would be fully healed, we talked about that last time at Blizzcon - and we had another one that involved hero leveling. We yanked that two days before the beta, because we just said "this is completely encouraging the wrong behavior". We had it playing in our Blizzard alpha and we had these people who were like “Oh we really need a Winston right now, their Widowmaker is ripping us apart” and they’d be like “Nah I’m almost at my unlock, I’m not gonna do it”. We were rewarding the exact behavior we don’t want to see. We have some really killer ideas, and we have a really great designer working on the third progression system so I’m hoping that it makes its debut sometime in the beta, sometime before launch. "It's time to reep fast, and bullets are too slow"
take it with a grain of salt. the careful wording by the vp during the announcement has some things to worry about. $40 for the base game, and all current 21 heroes will be free, but they haven't said a word about any future content. they still haven't confirmed there will be no purchasing new future heroes, and even in an interview jeff kaplan stated interviewer - "Are they feeling like, 'now that I have Genji, D.Va, and Mei, I feel overwhelmed and there's too many Heroes... or is it like 'Wow the game's really fun but like it's starting to feel stale, can you guys add something?' We're gonna gauge it from there." "There's not going to be a heroes store at launch," Jeff reiterated.
Right. This all feels like Blizzard-speak for "future content will be locked behind a paywall". I know they haven't explicitly stated this yet, but if they were free, why wouldn't they just tell the world? It's either that, or Blizzard themselves don't entirely know what the hell is going to happen in the future and they're legitimately being honest about their uncertainty.

I loved that preview video showing off the shorts in the works.
Someone asked what British did to deal with Omnic Crisis and
Chris Metzen: "We don't know what the British did." Michael Chu: "It might have something to do with the buses though."
The League of Justice to the rescue.
"That Widowtracer thing is very popular" - Michael Chu "Ah the internet" - Chris Metzen Widowmaker and Tracer do have a history together and they really don't like each other. Jeff is gonna pull a Michael Chu and say you have to wait and see.
They just tried to sink a ship. It won't work
Morrison/76 pretty much confirmed to be Metzen's pet character for the series as well.
They just tried to sink a ship.
Can't sink something that's already at the bottom of the ocean.
They just tried to sink a ship. It won't work
They also confirmed there's at least 1 gay character so shippers can't decide if they should bail out or if they just caught new wind.
I posted about that when Soldier 76 was revealed. Didn't realize it really was connected.
Metzen was really specific about 76 in the panel, he pretty much took a line from that very page and said something along the lines of "we can't call him a super soldier".
Can't wait to get my hands on this. Planning on preordering the Origin Edition soon.
