One of my main concerns with Overwatch is actually Blizzard. All of their games get lots of DLCs and Im sure OW will get its share of paid map and hero DLCs.

There isn't a single Blizzard game that has actual DLCs in it.
There are microtransactions, old-school expansions that you can physically buy and Hearthstone expansions that you can get without paying Blizzard a single dime.
The closest thing to a D(ownloadab)L(e)C(ontent) are HS expansions and you download them with a patch...

Expansion pass is a better name and you can't really complain about the support they give for their games. Take a look at Diablo 3. Still getting free content patches that improve their game. And their SC2 titles are also worth their money.
WoW has tons of DLCs and to access any of their content a purchase is required, started with Burning Crusade. Im sure OW will get similar stuff, eventually to access all content a purchase of 4 DLCs is required.

They're not DLC though. They're Expansion Packs, the difference being that they're also available for physical purchase and they provide a significantly larger amount of content than DLC.

He still has a point though, it could be content that is free. It works for D3 and WoW because they're games made for that in mind.
I just really hope Overwatch doesn't do this, I don't see how expansions could work for a game like that, especially if they want people to play it over a game like TF2. It being a paid game is already a deal breaker for some.
Sceptics that love warframe and TF2 are coming into the overwatch thread to tell us how bad DLC is
lmao 90€ Lotus pack get real

I expect a model like Heroes of the Storm tbh.
Big content patches with a theme plus some smaller additions inbetween, like a map or two.
Just with (hopefully) free heroes, maps and game modes.

While I don't follow the complaints here and all the salty rage between you people, no one who is remotely into Warframe buys the steam DLC, they're all weird Steam exclusive packages stuff that is overpriced.

Arbitrary distinction.
Some stores will sell download codes for 'DLCs' and 'Expansion Packs' are all available for download online.
DLC literally means Downloadable Content. If you're paying to get additional content in a pre-existing game then that is a DLC and don't pretend otherwise just because the word DLC has some negative connotations.

Come on you know what the distinction people make is.
When people say DLC, they mean:

When people say expansion, they mean:

tbh while this is a good distinction that people should really make, I see it used less and less. Most people (including me because i'm a dumb) call the Skyrim expansions DLC, for example.

I expected nothing less from TB. He knows himself a good game. The fact anyone could say Overwatch doesn't require teamwork is insane.

I love TF2 and Warframe, and while I see similarities in mechanics of TF2 and Overwatch it's quite pointless to keep shouting "HEY THEY STOLE THIS AND THAT AND NOW IT'S BETTER TF2!" or whatever(idk if anyone said that in the thread specifically, just an example). Hell, DLC stuff is non-existant in TF2 even. Micro-transactions is a different thing tho. Overwatch looks interesting and as TB said in his video the fact that it's one-time purchase is better because you have access to all classes and have a 'complete' game from the point of gameplay. So essentially you are getting same shit as TF2 when it was paid-to-play(you get all classes, maps and gamemodes). I don't see any comparison to Warframe because the DLC for that is overprice as all eternal fucks in the universe and do not have the value for what you are paying for.
After watching TB's video I want to try out Overwatch, but alas I reacted too late to get into beta weekend. :v: Do they send out CBT invites periodically or is it only during specific times they announce?

They typically do a wave on Tuesday of each week, occasionally they skip one like they did with last week's. What with the mass weekend wave they did two days later. Their official Twitter will announce when they've finished sending out a wave for that day.
Didn't get access during the stress-test weekend thingy, my friend borrowed me his account.
What a hero. :joy:
Conclusion after a day of playing: Roadhog and Junkrat are the most top tier of waifus.

Still, when it comes to Blizzard they've been pretty consistent with expansion pack size for like forever.
So uhh, just started playing and boy howdy is Reinhardt awesome for attacking on payload.

avid warframe player here.
all of the steam "dlc" isn't worth it and 99% of what Digital Extremes sells in their Prime Access packs can be obtained for free in-game.
there isn't any actual "dlc" in warframe, they just send out free updates and really often with the large ones being 2-3 months apart.

Prime Vault
To clarify, either you or someone else is going to be spend real money so that you may get access to a bunch of (now) exclusive content. It is not traditional DLC, but it has many similarities to B2W.

Prime Vault is really no different than Prime Access, and if anything it's cheaper. The only "exclusive" content is a cosmetic that showed up before, and a fancy use item you can completely ignore without missing out on anything.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/MOrezqT.png[/t]
Red = You don't have to spend any amount of money to get, all of these are available for you to obtain yourself either through doing the missions that reward you with them or trading for them.
Pink = You can get without spending any of your own money, but someone will have to spend money on the platinum to make trading possible. Just part of the in-game economy really. Also 100% optional, doesn't directly impact your success in playing. Just a quality of life thing and cosmetic. (imagine buying an avatar lmao)
Everything else = Only available through the package and entirely optional. The syandana is a cosmetic and the extractor is a quality of life use item to get you resources while you're offline.
It's difficult to compare this to B2W when buying this stuff doesn't really make you win anything. Saves you time maybe, but it's not like you're buying mastery rank or innately more well equipped than someone who sunk actual time and effort into the game.

I knew you would post that. I'll just point out that Frost Prime has been exclusive to the Prime Vault for the last 8 months. It being available for a little over a week after it being unavailable for months is not a counter argument.
I should also address that Prime Access being the same thing as Prime Vault is completely wrong. Prime Vault is content that was taken off the market and now only available through real money purchase. Where as Prime Access just gives you the convenience of getting the newly introduced content sooner rather than later. They aren't even remotely the same thing.
But digress back to Overwatch: I highly doubt that Blizzard would succumb to modern DLC trends like buying individual heroes or map packs or having a season pass.
It's going to be free content updates (maps, balance patches), completely fair microtransactions (skins, maybe announcers?), and large $20-$40 expansions spaced like 1 year apart each (new heroes, new game modes, maybe some new mechanic or something gets reworked, possibly more lore continuity).
I really don't expect anything unfair to either the gameplay or the customer.

He's been continually available even after he was vaulted, go to trading channel and say "WTT for Frost Prime set". Just because he was vaulted doesn't mean his parts aren't out there.
now only available through real money purchase
this is 99% wrong sorry
I almost bet this is exactly how Overwatch will work.
Heroes are purchased exclusively through in-game currency. It won't be possible to purchase heroes. The amount won't be tremendous, so that everyone who plays even casually will be able to get the heroes not long after they come out. This incentivizes playing longer for the casual player because they have a goal in mind. When the player reaches that goal, they want to play the new character so they play even longer.
Skins are unlocked either through rewards for mastery in a character or real money purchase. It's possible that they may add an option to purchase skins with in-game currency as well, but it be very very time consuming to get them. But more likely, they will do something like Heroes of the Storm and sell skins exclusively with real money. This is fine because people who really like characters will buy skins specifically for them, and they won't get any benefits other than the aesthetics of the skin they like.
I think that would be a more than fair way to monetize the game.
Edit: Also can we stop the off-topic discussion about Warframe?

Actually if you read the details all those items are being added back into the reward tables.

I already addressed this. Either you or someone else is putting down real world money to get the platinum necessary to buy him through Prime Vault. He is not available through normal loot tables.

I'm aware. However that only reintroduces Frost Prime, Reaper Prime, and Latron Prime. We're still missing some Warframes and weapons with no known ETA as to when they will be reintroduced.

It will be identical to Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. The idea of additional content being locked behind another paywall is preposterous. Blizzard is smart enough not to do that for their multiplayer orientated games. World of Warcraft gets a free pass due to it being an MMORPG. There will be character skins, sprays, and some other purely cosmetic items and nothing more.

We don't know that yet. I'm still thrown for a bit of a loop over the fact it's actually a 40 dollar base game, when everyone else was so certain it would be free to play.
