• D&D and Tabletops RPGs V7: Yes you can talk about tabletops other than D&D

Like, in real like?
I've had players fall asleep mid sentence during sessions, getting caught ERPing between eachother in whispers/PMs and other things.
I once had a player who rolled up a Trox in a PF game, and proceeded to try and convince other PCs to ride around on his back due to him being Large. After that game ended, we played Exalted 2e, and at first he played a Solar and it was fine, but then he rerolled to a Lunar and started trying to convince people to ride around on his various animal forms. Eventually it got to a point where the rest of my players collectively were so weirded out by him that they asked me to kick him. I specifically remember one of them comparing him to 'an old man sitting next to a playground, watching all us kids have fun, and just slowly licking an ice cream cone, staring at us the entire time'.
One time during a game of Call of Cthulu (my first tabletop experience), we accidentally burned down a brother after an attempt at making alcoholic oatmeal. We called it "rum-meal", and the idea was spawned from one of our party who was playing as the disavowed son of JD Rockerfeller who decided to give up the rich boy life, buy a replica pirate ship, and become a bootlegger while LARPing as a pirate captain. That same session, we threw a brick at said brothel, only for the brick to ricochet off the wall and nail one of the player characters (a timid young burlesque dancer) square in the head, leaving her with a concussion for the next couple sessions. We also had a German assassin named Wulf; he was a towering wall of muscle, covered in tribal tattoos and wielding a Japanese katana. He was a man of few words, like the time he straight up punched his way into the aforementioned burlesque dancer's dressing room because "I still have questions for you". He fell overboard and drowned because his dense musculature prevented him from floating.
I am simultaneously reasonably sure what happened here and kind of confused. Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica's table of contents has been floating around and we're getting Loxodon as a player race. They have natural armor so if I'm ever playing in a Ravnica campaign or a campaign that lets me use Ravnica player options, I'm making me an elephant monk.
As I recall, we were fucking about in a kitchen and the DM asked us to justify our asinine actions. So we came up with the justification that, if the rum in the oatmeal was high-proof enough, it could be ignited and used as a makeshift molotov cocktail (disguised as a harmless bowl of breakfast). Suffice to say, the test was successful
Today in Unknown Armies: https://i.imgur.com/ff4wyyg.png I become a fucking god.
That better say "Half Life 3: The Free Man: 100% confirmed" or you're no god of mine.
Sorry, but no. UA3 has you set an objective for the entire group to work towards, and once you hit 100%, you succeed; we hit 100% this session when I used a Major charge(super powerful magical energy) to destroy a monster that'd been hounding us since the game started, which ended up opening a black hole in the sky and sucking the monster as well as some of the surrounding buildings in, so my character ascended to godhood.
I didn't answer this because at first I couldn't think of anything, all the funny stuff happens in game. But on reflection, I do have one that happened this summer, where it got really hot and so we decided to have DnD outdoors in a garden. We spent the week preparing and for the whole day we had a BBQ in the garden while playing DnD. I am the DM for our group, but on that day I was also the one cooking and tending the grill, I made burgers, steaks, pork chops, kebabs, sausages the whole 9 yards Everyone had a great time. Not a "funny" story but honestly it was the first time in a long while I was completely happy.
Hey guys, I have an interesting conundrum that I need help with, from a DM's perspective. I have a group of friends that is getting the D&D itch again, but we have conflicting schedules. One player works night shifts into the AM hours, and the other works closing shifts. Due to sleep and all of that, their schedules are incompatible. So what I'm wondering, is how should I plan this out? The options, as far as I'm aware, are: A. Run two separate campaigns B. Run a split campaign The problem with ths first option is that running 2 campaigns alongside each other would be a bit of nightmare logistically. The problem with the second option is smaller party sizs, which would probably mean death if I'm not careful as a DM. What advice do you guys have?
Out of those two options, I'd personally choose two campaigns.
Not even sure how a split campaign would work. Are you railroading them along the same story? Otherwise they would more than likely take pretty divergent paths to where its effectively a different campaign anyway.
A is cleaner and neater and allows you to tailor to the specific group(s) dynamic but if there's cross traffic, invariably you get "why didn't that happen to us, we're cool too'" moments if your players aren't mature B allows you avoid A possibly, and allows you to populate and fill out the "world" (scenario, place, setting, whatever) with cross channel flavor but eventually they have to sync in some way and you're possibly at exactly where you started. Managing party dynamics isn't a static thing and never should be. If a game ever stops because of a rule or mechanic, ANY rule, either the players weren't all that engaged and invested, they're one of those players, or they simply play for the meatspace MMO benefits which you can frankly play anything for, and maybe y'all should be playing UNO or Go Fish instead or a board game.
Last night in my Pathfinder session, I rolled four crits in a row, except we were fighting an enemy who is specifically immune to critical hits. Every roll made the DM lose her shit more and more.
By the third critical I'd have just let you do it anyway, vaguely suggesting the blessing of a deity or something—that's some chosen-one destiny type shit.
Thank you guys for the advice, but it looks like the solution is secret option C. The friend who is working closing shifts is going to try to adjust their scheduling to free up Saturdays. I'll keep these in mind in case that doesn't pan out though. Thanks again!
Me and a friend are looking to get our characters illustrated. We're willing to splurge a little, but we're having trouble finding artists willing to work without pre-existing visual references for the characters. Does anyone know of good commissionable artists who specialize in drawing tabletop characters?
That's the kind of little hobby/business I want to have drawing peoples tabletop/dnd characters But to actually answer the question, there was an INCREDIBLE painting of a characters Orc posted way back if you search through the thread you may find it (or someone else may know who I'm talking about and can link it for you.)
Depends on what kind of artstyle you want, I greatly recommend: https://twitter.com/dinerforwolves/status/1019007034799292416 Just be vary that he has NSFW works posted too but his art is amazing.
Go with MenteR.
You know it's going to be a good game when over OOC chat the second session in the words "oh man I don't think she realizes you're a magical F-16" are said
Oh cool nupunch unsubscribed me from the thread like three weeks ago. My PTU game has been going well, though fuck I don't think I've posted about it since before they even hit their first gym. They've gone through three so far: The Venom Gym (Bug/Poison), where the various plants in the arena could be used for medicinal effects in battle, featuring a type-shifted Combee and Vespiquen that were inspired by hallucinogenic mad honey. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/7e682f45-ffda-4654-89e0-071331ce0e14/ss (2017-01-22 at 08.18.55).png The Abyss Gym (Water/Dark), where the arena was the bottom of a massive whirlpool and the platforms floating along the sides of it actually moved around at different speeds, featuring a type-shifted Wailord in the vein of a sperm whale and a Tentacruel in the style of a giant squid. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/c707298e-b6e7-48bf-b87c-91b42dc14829/ss (2017-06-11 at 10.11.26).png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/09b2e8b5-8a9d-4178-a2a4-9a6d22a279a7/ss (2017-06-11 at 10.49.20).png And the Ancestor Gym (Fighting/Ghost), where the arena was a ruined mansion whose rooms would manifest whenever a trainer was inside them, featuring a type-shifted Honedge that was a bamboo training sword and a Hitmonchan that was just star platinum. Also this one was full contact, so the gym leaders themselves joined in on the fighting. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/a6b85f3c-62fb-4e2e-adcf-af341dfdb83f/ss (2017-09-24 at 05.41.35).png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/956ba8f5-2285-44bc-aa19-65544d3eced8/ss (2017-09-30 at 03.45.42).png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/842f79b1-5f14-44e4-9ea7-bc9d7712a0da/ss (2017-09-30 at 04.35.18).png Besides just challenging gyms they've putzed around with other things in their travels, and tussled with their antagonists that turned out to be team rocket. Most notably this culminated in our last session, where I lied my ass off to the players and had them think they were just going on a quick detour to the local digsite to get some fossils reanimated, as opposed to the running battle dungeon they wound up in. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/9df574b7-bee5-4b14-8390-e952de0a23b6/ss (2018-08-26 at 12.04.11).png See? Totally just a side-location, not somewhere that needs a fully-detailed battle map. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/dda9efb2-2c0f-44ef-8dc4-48401dc6c251/ss (2018-08-26 at 04.31.58).png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/5c2fae70-a1c7-4075-a3b5-073dfd62dec7/ss (2018-08-26 at 06.15.08).png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/52a2f068-3fbf-4ff5-b5f0-d63cf4620f5f/ss (2018-08-26 at 08.18.13).png Hahaha sike, and to amp up the pressure this entire string of fights was all one Scene (PTU has narrative-based limitations on a lot of things, so this meant they had to manage their per-fight resources more carefully) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/b30b6a56-d0c8-44b7-ac81-7b3f5c18c719/ss (2018-08-26 at 11.52.37).png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/95043cd8-6cb4-4668-b17e-5971b9034c1c/ss (2018-08-27 at 01.38.39).png Culminating in a positively ridonculous bossfight with a giant Tyrantrum that had three healthbars and the accompanying multiple actions as a boss, and through a quirk of the reanimation method also had an effective two more healthbars since it couldn't faint and had to be outright killed. Featuring This bit of music that has no business going as hard as it does considering what it's from. Also a lot of good in-combat arguing with the rocket guy before they finally beat him down.
I'm going mad trying to remember the name of a DND planning site I once used. Basically it's a diary/wiki where users could add information about their campaigns into organised little sections. It was incredibly useful but I can't find it Anyone know what I mean? And in general if you have sites and stuff you find interesting, I'm all ears.
http://www.cryrid.com/digitaldnd/ https://www.wolflair.com/realmworks/ ?
No, that wasn't it, but those do look interesting.
EDIT: She did NOT realize I was a magical F-16 (adamant entertainment warlock) nor that the rest of the party consists of a slap chop that can buff while simultaneously ripping limbs off (warchanter) A debuff machine (min-maxed Slyph insanity Witch) and a giant beat stick (min-maxed fighter/hellknight hybrid) the least powered (by that I mean less powered not under powered) PC was the hellknight and that was by design the original draft was insanity. We faced a boss character (PC statted Shadow walker rogue and his mook cohorts) The boss was downed before he even got a turn and the mooks well they might as well of been inanimate. We're taking a 2 week break so the DM can restat/rewrite. I knew this game might be interesting because the PC's consist of 4 DM's 3 of which (ncluding me) have played for 10+ years and it's ran by one of our mutual players. At the end of the session we all asked if it would just be easier to restat our PC's and retcon the first 2 sessions
Coincidentally that PTU campaign's first session was two years ago today, so here's all the towns they've visited since then. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/2c97d89d-02df-47fd-9f77-a62ccdf8542d/Dymeriport Low.png Dymeriport, where they arrived to the region. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/2da636f9-6d56-41dd-9168-9c0bef18aa76/Cantilbe Town.png Cantilbe Town, home of the Venom Gym. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/59472659-3462-475e-bce5-cda2f3114eb5/Biot Town.png Biot Town, where some plot and a minor mystery happened. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/0acdf1da-796d-4652-8837-c06c87006264/Mirkhaj City.png Mirkhaj city, from which you can reach the Abyss Gym off the coast. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/c16fc5a0-2253-4b06-9994-741a6141ce5f/Atouries Village.png Atouries Village, home of the Ancestor Gym. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/02bf2a44-5a7c-40b9-ad4e-39996bde1473/Uskymeto.png And Uskymeto, which is near the Ore Gym but they actually bypassed the cave that was in to go do the fossil thing. The various maps for the routes in between and other stopovers not included. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114100/3ae93ce2-47fd-4e41-bd3c-607f10209ee0/Alpohn Map.png And the Alpohn region as a whole for some reference, each tile is 1km.
Oh, that's a cool looking project, what is it supposed to be like Darkmonkey?
They're maps made using Tiled for my PTU campaign. It's a pretty straightforward 'beat the gyms, get the badges, some criminals show up' affair.
