D&D and Tabletops RPGs V7: Yes you can talk about tabletops other than D&D

My party had a huge debate about why couldn't a spear and quarterstaff be classified as a "reach" weapons
You might as well make the greatsword/greataxe a reach weapon in that case.

if they want a reach spear tell them to get a pike
Jesus the Roachlings from the Tome of Beasts add so much flavour and spice to your first session, the use of normal roaches helped me create this cool moment early on.
Had this moment where the group (pretty much 2 players and 2 NPC companions who were helping them) were investigating this town in the middle of the desert for clues and were taunted by this hooded figure who quickly went inside his home. Naturally they break into his house and see that's it's pitch black, so dark not even dark vision helps them. They manage to fail their rather low perception checks which leads to the Druid using that spell which outlines living things in bright colours at which point the whole room goes bright and the entire room comes alive with this massive horde of black cockroaches charging at them, attempting to crawl down their throats.
Maybe it was cheap or cheesy but holy hell it was cool in motion and the players loved it. The players thought I was merely dropping flavour when I had the bar man tell them the town had a roach problem recently.
So my group is in a cart with horses, the horses have been walking slowly because our ranger keeps rolling badly on her animal check so she tried to use talk with animals to ask them nicely to go faster.
She failed her persuasion check so she tried to make a deal with them that they could have some of her rations if they went faster.
She rolled a 2 so in response the horses stopped, expecting her to give them the food then and there (due in part to them being stupid and her failing the roll), she argues with them unsuccessfully.
My dwarf gets fed up waiting and tries to intimidate the horses by using prestidigitation to make sparks shoot from his hands while standing on the cart behind them.
Rolled a 1 and the horses almost broke the cart trying to kick back at him.
Druid ended up having to turn into a horse in order to convince them to start moving again.
This is the reason our group takes so long to do anything...
I don't have access to the books right now so remind me, are the dnd changelings shapeshifting magical/illusory or physical?
I don't have access to the books right now so remind me, are the dnd changelings shapeshifting magical/illusory or physical?
From what I could tell it's basically the same as the alter self spell (physical), minus the natural weapons/aquatic form, though theoretically they could shift into a humanoid that has those traits, but in what I've found it's dm discretion on if that's the case.
I lament that there's no option to multi-subclass in 5e. I understand why since many of them are frontloaded (and for some classes it doesn't make thematic sense) but for Fighter/rogue it's an easy refocus.
Mfw the rogue has been adding her initiative bonus to her attack rolls this entire campaign so far.
In 3.5, is there a good way for a Rogue to get a familiar/pet rat?

With money.

"wait, the HIT DIE isn't meant to be added to the damage...? "
- Dragonborn monk
Mfw the rogue has been adding her initiative bonus to her attack rolls this entire campaign so far.
I have the opposite problem where I keep forgetting what bonuses I get to add to my character's to-hit and end up whiffing rolls at critical moments because I forgot to apply all my bonuses.
Almost died to a goblin ambush. Playing Storm King's Thunder so I'll spoiler tag it.
[sp]Was searching for missing people in first city we came too. Found a bunch of goblins. We had only killed 3 goblins before coming across two that were playing "tag" in a pumpkin field. They seemed like they were going about their own business so we let them live. We came across one other goblin that we let go as well. Made our way into another garden and as I was investigating a house, I was ambushed by 3 goblins, and then later 9 goblins.[/sp]
Thank the heavens for my high AC. One attack brought me down to 3hp. Level 1 sucks...
That's what happens when you show mercy to evil little bastards.

Spare not the goblin.
Goblins are the master race.
Imagine who'd win in a setting with commonplace guns? The race is exquisitely suited for their use. You best start praying to Maglubiyet for mercy, and absolutely nail the pronunciation, because all the other dudes in the pantheon are pretty whacky too.
Sad times where I wanted to play a hobgoblin cleric of Nomog Gaeya and the GM thought I was being some kind of bigot.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and the way the DM played them made them seem so innocent and sweet.
Never trusting a goblin again.

Don't ever trust evil. Just because it isn't always murdering puppies doesn't mean they won't knife you the SECOND your back is turned!

I trust lawful evil over any of the chaotics :v:
so in the current game in playing in, my dragonborn barbrian got screwed over by dice rolls at the begining 1 16 and the rest 12/13
but now he's at level 4 and has access to great weapon master (-5 to hit +10 to damage), he's actually able to hold his own now
last game was us taking part in a team tournament, i hit 2 crits while using GWM kinda nice to be able to roll 2d10+17 ,using a glaive, 20 strength thanks to a belt and dragonborns +2, and then finally another +2 from rage
I am a damn fool of a new DM. I gave a Deck of Many Things to a random group of high level NPCs as part of a goofy random encounter within a city. You know, they argue over it, draw, one of them gets Void or some dumb shit, I have the deck behind my screen so I can fudge it if I need to, etc, then this 4th level party just walks away and laughs I guess.
I forgot that my friend's Tiefling Wild Magic Sourcerer's main character trait is "Crippling gambling addiction". She hops over the railing into the courtyard where these knights are, and just swipes the damn deck and draws a card before they can tackle her down to the floor.
I tried to stop her. I really did. She rolled too well, she had really high dexterity for a sourerer. I even gave the NPCs advantage in trying to tackle her but no. She drew Vizier.
So now one of my players has the means to end my entire intriuge/mystery arc because I wanted to poke fun at our friendgroup's long history of getting the Deck way too early on and then having it ruin everything forever. :v:

Well, I mean, it looks like that tradition's going to continue, but it sounds like you brought it upon yourself.
I came here to ask though, why the hell doesn't 5e DnD have an infernal bloodline?

Because that’s eeeevil
Also because Tieflings already claimed that for their entire species

Yeah I know, but if I want to play a tiefling sorcerer whose magic comes from Grandpa Beelzebub or whatever then it seems like I'm shit out of luck since there's only "your great grand-dad fucked a dragon" or "lolrandom magic".
Read more books. There's also "god loves you" and "you're electric" and "edgelord" and if your GM's willing it's not hard to reskin/refluff these.
Xanathar seems largely well balanced, most new things are safely on the weakerside if they have to choose. I mean I have serious doubts on an unbreakable arrow and a cantrip that damages everyone within a hundred foot radius, but otherwise it's something you should pick up.

A tiefling infernal warlock is probably the closest you're going to get to that. Or refluff one of sorc bloodlines.

I kinda want this. Is that bad?

sorry bub.. just checked xanthars all you git is:
DIVINE SOUL
Sometimes the spark of magic that fuels a sorcerer comes from a divine source that glimmers within the soul.
SHADOW MAGIC
You are a creature of shadow, for your innate magic comes from the Shadowfell itself.
STORM SORCERY (also in sword coast guide)
Your innate magic comes from the power of elemental air.
You could probably adapt "divine soul" to "infernal soul" ? with papa DM's blessing, of course.
