The Sims Megathread - Come on in! The house is on fire but it's ok. Have you seen my basement?
According to some interviews from E3, they're actually getting rid of 100% open neighborhoods, instead they'll be split into districts that you load into, apparently the loading time is fast (30~ second), and each one will contain several homes and commercial lots.

I'm okay with this. Hopefully it will improve performance, because The Sims 3 runs like shit.
well as long as the loading times really are 30 seconds and not 7 hours like loading up a neighborhood in sims 3, this should be fine.
I kinda hope this means each district is somewhat big and different, like say have a downtown and a nature-friendly area etc etc
Keep in mind he also stated loading time depends on your computer, and that probably doesn't take into consideration all the future expansions either.

Seems like a step backwards though, you saw what happened with Simcity and how that got "split" into small sections
So did anyone ever play Sims Medieval? If so, how was it?
I figure since it doesn't show up in the OP, the opinion of it is pretty low.
imagine a game like sims 3 set in the medieval times (duh)
except the whole focus of the game was on quests, a kinda more fleshed out version of opportunities
it was like
you have a different dude for each role (king, knight, merchant, priest, alchemist, whatever), and you can have multiple. They level up, and levelling up makes them able to do more - so how it would work is you'd pick a quest which could be completed by a certain number of roles. Then, you pick one from that role to play as. You only play as that guy (pretty sure you can interact with your other sims, kinda cool). Once your quest is done, you get a reward and you can pick another quest
I think you could like earn things which would allow you to build more stuff in the village (though it was always the same village), like a spy quarters for the castle or a church for a priest.
The camera was a bit weird - it was kinda like a play in that you could only view each house from one angle. Actually, perhaps more like a doll house. In essence, with how the camera worked, this game is as close to sims literally being a virtual doll house as it gets.
One particular thing I liked about the game was how the traits worked - it used the sims 3 style of picking traits for your sims, but in true storybook fashion each of your dudes had two good qualities and then one 'fatal flaw' - say, they loved eating and so they have to eat a lot more than other sims. Or, their parents were killed by a whale (seriously) and if they didn't go on a whale hunt every few days they'd go insane.
It was a very meh game. It was fun(ish), but you felt awfully restricted in what you could do for it being a sims game. If you ever look at the opportunity system and think "MAN, this would be a great interface for a questing system" then boy do I have the game for you.
haven't played it in a long while so idk if all of this is accurate but its what I can remember.
I actually own the 'prima official guidebook' for sims medieval (lol)

Sounds OK if this allows something like more interaction with buildings and less shitty, boring rabbit holes.
So I never actually played Sims 2 and 3, but I played every one of the original Sims expansions.
Should I get a Sims 3 ticket for cheap or just wait on Sims 4? Or should I go classic Sims 2 instead?
I'd really like to be able to play a sim and take them through university to adult life.
Maybe it will allow for overall larger maps too. Like, the size of them could be bigger than your average Sims 3 neighborhood if you were to combine all the zones.

I think I would just wait at this point. It's on sale on Origin right now but three months isn't that long of a wait.
Sims 4 comes out the same day I start college.
Why
I do find it amusing that in order to improve load times over The Sims 3, they're going to be splitting Neighbourhoods into districts and shit, I thought the tech we have in this day and age was enough for you know, optimizing shit but clearly I'm talking shit.
Maybe they're using that optimization to improve the graphics and do other shit?
Sims 4 comes out the same day I start college.

You know what you must do.
You must make a character based off of yourself and make him go to school while you skip class in real life.
Sims 4 comes out the same day I start college.

EA scoffs at your feeble attempts at tertiary education.
This is exactly what they're doing, with the new emotions system and the removal of most rabbit holes there's going to be a lot more stuff to process, cutting down neighborhoods is a good compromise.
I was thinking this at first but It got overridden by the tech we have now.
i really hope they fix this thing with community lots being totally deserted in neighborhoods. at least in the previous games, community lots felt alive because there were actually people milling around in them.
I just want Open for Business with the standard game
Hopefully with this Zone concept we can go into the city from the get go.
I quite like this idea. Much better than having the game load for 10 minutes then spend the entire game time lagging through everyday tasks.
I hope the story progression actually works on Sims 4 and the town is more alive. When I took my Sims to a club it would always be empty. My Sim's friends would never get married and would have asexual reproduction. Also, at some point 99% of the town would be elderly people.

this is honestly the reason I can't get a proper legacy family going on sims 3
i have to keep adding in new families otherwise the current families shrivel up and die and the town fades away

Even using something like Nraas?
Honestly the Sims 4 needs to be here already.
Even using something like Nraas?
I didn't use nraas on the family i've done the longest with (3 generations to y.adult on 150 day life cycle) but I'm using it on the families I'm working on now and it's working I guess
I think it's causing my game to freeze up temporarily a helluva lot though so I'm considering whether or not I should keep using it.
Use Nraas Story Progression, Overwatch and Error Trap. Also make sure to disable memories, your whole town gets memories so having it enabled can make your game run like shit
Whats the story progression good for?
Whats the story progression good for?
Mostly just to give you "fresh" sims you can interact with. You'd run out of sims eventually else
Whats the story progression good for?
It replaces EA's story progression system. I'm sure there are more details on the why and how on the Nraas site. http://nraas.wikispaces.com/StoryProgression
Whats the story progression good for?
Nraas Story Progression allows inactive households to progress with their lives. They will have a chance of getting married, having kids (not through asexual reproduction like I said posts above), get a job, advance with their jobs, drop their jobs if they want to, make friends, make enemies, etc.
Most of this doesn't happen in my game without the mod.

Wait, is that... do memories do that in the base game? Because if so that explains part of my problem and I feel kinda dumb for not realizing it.
I feel like the only person who's not interested in TS4 anymore. Not that I was very interested to begin with.
TS4 looks too cartoony.
