The Sims Megathread - Come on in! The house is on fire but it's ok. Have you seen my basement?

Hey guys,
I finally got the Sims 2 to work in 1080p but for some reason Shadows and the slider to smooth out objects are grayed out?
Also seems to be the issue why I don't have shadows but black rectangles as shadows.
Anyone who might be able to help me out?

The second part of that will let you change the settings for shadows and smoothing. To fix the shadows the only thing you can do is set them to medium.
So, I recently downloaded the game due to it being free, I followed the guides on how to change the resolution and memory, but I keep getting this error message:

Is it literally asking me to downgrade my DirectX
Hm. I start up TS2 and I get the EA logo then a blank screen. Any ideas? I didn't do the resolution or memory changes yet.

Is it purple or just black?
Reminds me of when I set up a "chocolate factory" by inviting the whole town over to it and trapping them in there to work the machines forever.

I'm also having issues with TS2 myself, I did the mentioned fixes but shadows still appear greyed out, should I just go through and manually force all settings to medium?

Just black.

The texture memory one should've enabled your shadow settings, what did you set it to?

1536 since I've got a GTX 480.

Have you run the DirectX web setup on your computer recently? Seems backwards on machines running newer versions of Windows, I know, although afaik DirectX 9 and 10+11 run side by side.
(Ergo, the DirectX 9 binaries could be outdated or non-existent at all)

There was a bug in the way Sims 2 detects graphics memory/graphics cards; it seems as though, at some point, NVIDIA rolled over a number in their driver versioning system which causes the sims 2 to think you have a very old version of the drivers installed. Check out this topic on MTS, I solved the issue with an edit to the graphics rules.sgr file.
EDIT: I remembered after reading that topic again, I was actually going after an issue where the smoothed edges (AA) slider was greyed out in game. However, that topic I linked to might help you in getting your shadows back, too.
Is there a way to force Sims 2 to launch in windowed mode?

Make a shortcut to the game and put -w at the end of the Target line in the properties window.

k, this worked but it didn't help. Still have a black screen after the EA logo.

Probably got glitched creating the user files if it got closed prematurely? Try deleting the EA GAMES/Sims 2 folder from your documents folder and starting it again.

I don't even have that file.

I misspoke, it's actually titled "The Sims 2" rather than Sims 2, unless you don't even have an EA Games folder?
Try using Origin's repair function, just right click the game in your library and you can validate it like on Steam.
I went to so much effort to get Sims 2 to run in a decent resolution, and now I've lost interest.
I've gotta say, playing around with the Sims 4 CAS demo, and I think visually these are the best Sims yet. They all look very distinct. And the animation and overall style of everything is very clean but effective.
God I hope the full game will hold up...
God damn playing The Sims 2 again, brings back memories....
for those crashing after loading, here's a fix
http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=5446
it also enables shadows and AA
Strangetown best town
I only ever played vanilla Sims 2 back in the day. It's weird playing it with the expansions, there is so much more to do.
How in the hell do I make Sims 2 run at a higher resolution? I'm looking it up online but none of them work.

How do I know which one I launch from? The thing I start is just "The Sims 2 Ultimate Edition"

I reinstalled it, still didn't make any My Doc files. Started it, still nothing. Repaired it, still nothing. :(
