My friends and I use to do that all the time; explore the world and survive off of the decaying remains of other settlements.
Most of the time we'd find some uber strong guy who would kill anyone near his land because it fucked up some priest stat or something.
Other times we'd find whole towns devoid of people and ripe with treasure.
Anyone nearby with 30+ blacksmithing skill?
A dioptra is made by combining a protractor and a sight, with the quality of the former determining success chance. I've imped a protractor to 28QL, the max I can do with my mining skill (brass lump quality is capped by the copper lump quality), which still isn't enough to make a dioptra with my 20 blacksmithing. Alternatively, if you have higher mining skill than 28, could you drop a couple of higher quality copper ore in the forge?
To make a bridge, the dioptra needs to be used with a range pole. The range pole needs 8 cochineal, which I don't know if we have. Once we pass these two hurdles we can make bridges!
edit:
Got the dioptra! We have 5 cochineal in the smith BSB, I'm guessing those are trulli's. If we can use those we'd need just 3 more. Time to hunt for cave bugs!
A bit dark, but,

We're through!
Now once we level the floor (with the "level" action; mines 1 rock every 10 seconds) we can pass through it with rowboats and small sailing boats! Unfortunately, leveling (and "flatten") only works on tiles less than 7 below water, so "manual" floor mining is required to make way for the bigger ships. There's room for improvement after that too but it's a lot of work for little gain: for example, we could expand two tiles to one side to make a road next to the canal, or we could reinforce the canal walls with beams, or we could put mine doors on the entrances. Mine doors decay fairly quickly off-deed but we could limit boat access to our lake and harbour using them.
In other news, I'm still looking for cochineal. Also, most of the crops up top are harvested now; I've refrained from replanting because I don't know what trullilulli's schedule is for that area. All the harvest can be found in the smith storage bins for anyone who wants to replant.
Well, we have both a dioptra and a range pole now, and a small bridge later this is how my place looks like:

I've been leveling 20 slope at a time instead of 40, so the canal is easily traversed by foot or cart during work. I also raised the ceiling on both ends so we're clear to lower as much as we want now. Leveling a cave floor is ridiculously easy to do unattended: the rock drops on the floor, not in your inventory, and the timer is entirely limited by stamina; for me it lasts about 7 minutes at a time. It seems like a good way to raise mining, body strength and to find gems.
I hit 23 body strength if anyone needs loading!
i kinda fucked up and mined by accident instead of levelling, on either side cuz i'm a scrub. had to mine down each corner to make the tile flat again to continue levelling.
Do I still have to walk 30min or can I just teleport to the town?
hey wow we got there eventually, was a strange adventure

If we had placed a deed yet you could have teleported, assuming you're on a character that hasn't used the teleport before. We haven't planted one yet, though.

Get on IRC!
Are facepuncers still playing on wurm unlimited's Wyvern server? I just joined after 5 months of inactivity and found out my account had been reset. I quickly joined Mol Rehan and went to the PVP server, which appears to be still somewhat active with 25 players online. I sailed back to Twin-Peaks city ( not far from Mol Rehan spawn ). The way up the hill from the boat was difficult because the uphill tunnel appears to have collapsed and the road uphill decayed. When I finally made it up the mountain after 15 munutes of climbing I found twin-peaks occupied by a PMK called dawn, and in severe state of decay, with no buildings to be seen, most walls have decayed or are decaying and the huge farm was a grass plain now. I could only take a quick look, I quickly had to sled down the mountain because guards were coming. I read on the last page FP is still on wyvern, Where are we chilling at now?
Nowhere. Some people are on Xanadu which is the normal wurm online where you have to pay premium.

I went back to Wyvern for a short time, explored our old settlement at twin peaks for a while
I left after noticing none of the boats were left and I was basically trapped there.
Didn't like the idea of dying cause I had a rare halberd that I wasn't happy about the idea of losing.
the struggle is real
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/yDZERSq.jpg[/img_thumb]
slowly progressing with the canal though
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/9YnNaN2.jpg[/img_thumb]
Since all you slobs are hardly ever showing up, I've been working on me house
[thumb]https://i.imgur.com/Y35SPYc.jpg[/thumb]
Now with more stone!!
Further, the backside of the tower will soon have a truly exciting addition! Gosh!
Since I'll probably have enough time now to get back into wurm I'll be playing on wyvern tonight. Ingame name is comradeUSSR; if you want to message me. In the meantime I will be just cruising around in my boat looting stuff.
Gonna try to join if anybody is there still. otherwise i'll start building skills and whatever nearby until someones available to invite me to the deed.

We've prepared the area but we haven't planted a deed. It's a fairly easy journey from Lormere, though.

The canal is open for rowboats and small sailing boats!
went on an adventure across the lake with ice and ja_cop, stole a load of shit and nearly died multiple times.
we might be able to fund our deed now :~)

I accidentally crippled frank
Early in the night, things were quiet. My amazing, totally-not-overengineered crib was admired by all, and then we fixed Icemaz' crumbling house (read: Icemaz and Frankonitio fixed the house, while I was smearing my special salve on their sweaty bodies).
[thumb]https://i.imgur.com/qPhI8SH.jpg[/thumb]
Icemaz remembered a grand stash of mortar from a previous raid of his, so we decided to seek it out, all three of us on BoatyMcBoatface, the small sailing boat from my previous post. Someone had pre-empted us: the mortar was gone, so we decided to raid along the shore instead. Ice and frank couldn't keep their hands (and large iron mauls) off each other on the journey which caused somewhat of a hickup along the way; Icemaz elaborates in the above post. Many shenanigans, large crates and a kharmic pair of bad wounds later, we found a mountainside filled with horses, and so I'm three horses richer as we speak.
First jackpot we hit was a corpse with some gems, but more importantly, it was full of high quality tools (70-80QL) with various enchantments which we vied for like hyena. Nearby was a small sailing boat near completion, needing just a triangular rig and 28 more hull planks. The triangular rig requires some skill and lots of cotton and wemp to make, but we have everything we need. We'll have to go pick it up later. The nice thing about unfinished boats is that one of us becomes the legitimate owner with all the perks that come with it!
But the real haul was still up ahead: we sailed into a cave opening in the mountainside. Inside was a massive haul of gems, some good tools, and we took just about everything that wasn't bolted down for good measure. The rug was truly exquisite. No wonder there was a large stash of gems there: this cave was the entrance to a truly massive underground ramp reaching up into a valley in the mountains. Here's the view from the top, after bashing down the mine door with Ice's trusty maul:

[thumb]https://i.imgur.com/08vRuIy.jpg[/thumb]
(Pictured: one of the newly acquired horses, notably not [i]grey[/i]!)
We didn't find much loot up in the valley, but we learned a few things: there were at least two players working in this area, and one of them was not only active, but he/she logged in just as we scaled the ramp. They also had a hell horse gone feral, to our dismay. We killed and skinned the local cat (anyone in need of a fine pelt?). Luckily we didn't encounter said player except for the nameplate in local chat. Our footprints are all over the place, but we came and left by boat, so our haul should be safe from pursuers!
Our boat and inventories chock full, we headed home. After a failed attempt at fencing our stolen gems to a personal merchant (we need to take them to the trader in Lormere!), some travellers came by and mentioned they were looking to buy gold. I went ahead and sold our stash of 134 gold ore (20QL) for 1s. There's another gold vein near the lake we can uncover if we want more (and I've prospected silver recently too).
We only explored a small part of Hammer Lake. With the canal newly opened we have plans to raid the shores further, and we have plenty of boats if anyone wants to join our raiding party!

Sailing back from Linton to our place now, just passing this horse breeder place we passed on the way up:

(Sorry, it's dark!)
The animal pen is off-deed and surrounded by ~35QL wooden fences. If we bring a raiding party all equipped with decent mauls we can probably leave with a bunch of thoroughbred horses! (max 4 per boat)
Turboamic and his fantastic cheeks join the fray

I told him to stick to the road and not go into the forest with lots of crap weighing him down, so of course he went off the road and into the forest with lots of crap weighing him down. Now we're looking for his corpse!
