There weren't really any changes that ruined anything at least to my knowledge. If it's a performance issue then I've not experienced it personally.

In the original version, setting it on High gave you volumetric lighting.
In the new version, you also get it, but now everything inside the rays are pixellated. And turning it to Very High murders FPS whenever you look at the volumetric rays.
