Mass Effect Megathread: He said "I should go." Do I sound like that?

Half of what I see looks good and the other half is amateur-league shit that makes me wonder how the hell Bioware is running their ship now. Mass Effect 3 had a lot (a lot) of weaknesses as a product but I don't remember pre-release media being this dubious.
This really is going to be the Foodfight of videogames.

So RPS published an article of their experience with the first few hours of the game and well, they are not very happy:
It’s mindblowing how dreadful the planet scanning system is. That you have to watch the camera zoom in to wherever you were, then crawl across the solar system to wherever you clicked (in an animation that reveals nothing, offers nothing) and then every single time zoom in too far into that planet, hold for two seconds, then pull back out again to where it’ll eventually show the UI. I can only assume that in testing BioWare had a way to skip this, because otherwise anyone playing the game ahead of launch would surely have questioned the wisdom of making this completely unrewarding experience so unbelievably boring to wade through.
UI design is a spectacle of bad choices, and this is the one area where it’s definitely not going to improve after these scene-setting few hours. This is a design so poorly put together that you can’t even just look at a list of active quests. You instead have to pick your way through an unintuitive and irritating mess of menus, clicking on each blank mission category to see whether you’ve got anything active on the list inside each. It’s an opaque process, clumsy to navigate. (Hell, my hand incessantly twitches at my mouse’s thumb button to go back, as is standard in every web browser, but not implemented here.)
And why is the quest log highlighted with an exclamation mark indicating a new quest this time? It doesn’t always label the categories to show you which folder the exclaim applies to, and sometimes there isn’t actually a mission for the exclamation mark it does show, so click through each category in turn to discover no, no, no, no, no, and then realise that it’s because it’s moved a completed quest into the completed list.
Oh, and in case that seems like a breeze of a system, it’ll merrily change which mission you’re pursuing without telling you! I was following this dumb murder mystery side quest, but because there was a main story plotline on the same planet it decided to switch its pursued quest to that one. It does this all the damned time. It’s beyond infuriating.
oh boy

Now before anybody says anything, please take note that it's from John Walker.
To put it in perspective, he thinks ME3's ending is fine and everyone who complained are "Loons" and he described Inside as "an empty, procedural, albeit often beautiful platform game with not a single original idea in its belt" and called the ending "utterly dreadful."
He also hated TW3.

Bad author, honestly. This article is really shoddily written. I've only seen about 2 hours of the game, and I can already tell you [sp]the Kett aren't shooting at you after immediate first contact with your species, since the Nexus got there 14 months prior.[/sp] Also, "LIZARD PEOPLE ON A DESERT WORLD WEH," for real?
Also "(no one plays Mass Effect as a guy, right?)."
Dropped.
The animations on the faces are starting to irk me, because there are some characters with REALLY good facial expressions, and animations but FemRyder (the one I wanted to play) isn't one of them. The way the crafting system just dumps all that shit on you at once is overwhelming. But beyond that, these qualms don't really line up with the footage I've been watching?

I dunno man, from my point of view if the guy who loved all the dumb shit in ME3 thinks Andromeda is bad then it feels like you REALLY know that Bioware fucked up.

I wouldn't take the opinions of someone who hated TW3 seriously when discussing open world RPGs.

And what if there's someone who loved all the dumb shit in ME3 and thinks Andromeda is a step up?
It's all pretty subjective, and you can look at it in any way you want to, but this guy has been writing a lot of (bad)shit for RPS.

no it's not, jesus christ.
Less than a week, now.

I am filled with anticipatory dread
no it's not, jesus christ.
Yeah I don't understand where stuff like that is coming from. At worst Mass Effect Andromeda will be a mediocre, forgettable game to add to the pile. There's absolutely no way in hell it'll be a "disaster" in any real kind of way.

I compare it to foodfight because of the bad character models, animation, uncanniness, and voice acting. I mean I'm sure it can play fine when the ai isn't bugging out.
Having picked it up for MP only, I am more than content to avoid the trashfire that is coming via the other venue of the game.

And he also wouldn't shut up about Deponia being "offensive" because he couldn't deal with the black humor. And then he went on to (badly) review the 3 sequels. Clickbait rules everything around me, cream, get the money, dolla dolla bill y'all!
I sure hope nobody here has pre-ordered this because it's almost guaranteed to be a mess at launch in one way or the other. I'm gonna wait a week or two after release.

Well it looks like we can make as funny characters as we could in Mass Effect 2.
monster factory episode when
There's something that doesn't quite convince me about the created characters: they have this odd plasticine quality to them.
I did find the created characters from Dragon Age: Inquisition great however, so take this with a grain of salt

I don't see anything custom? It's just default femryder with blonde hair?

wouldn't recommend directly hotlinking from 4chan, although the links will last longer now they'll still eventually die

Not going to preorder it but I'll gladly do the 10 hour trial.
So early access starts in about 7 hours, give or take.

a lot of the stuff he said about shitty UI is true though. i've watched PCgamer's stream.
obvious spoilers
that planet mining stuff is especially curious because every time it does the flying through space animation, which looks quite nice but isn't necessary among all the steps, it zooms in real close to a planet and freezes, so it feels like it's loading something. then it zooms out to reveal what you can scan. and sometimes after all that, there might not even be anything to scan.
