Mass Effect Megathread: He said "I should go." Do I sound like that?

All I really need to know is if he includes himself in the "team" he talks about. If not, I have far more faith. No matter what I am probably still going to get it because Mass Effect is one of the best fictional universes in which I have ever spent time. But I'll enjoy my stay more if the story is written by writers instead of...well, anyone who isn't a writer by career.
I'm pretty sure Mac Walters is still part of the writing team, if not the lead writer. If Casey is part of the team, I'm guessing he's just going to sit around and oversee general design stuff.
Mac Walters isn't a good writer. Who thought to promote a dialogue writer to lead writer?
Okay Mass Effect thread, I'm here to poll you.
My friend insists Miranda is the worst character in the series. I insist it's Samara.
Who do you hate more of the two?
Boxes for Samara, Rainbows for Miranda
Say why if you're so inclined.
I don't really hate either of them. I liked them both. However, I think we can all agree that Garus is the best bro/char ever.

Why not both? They're both whiny, neither of them have particularly inspiring character development (even Zaeed has better motivations and reactions to your decisions), and the plot of ME3 isn't terribly affected without them. I rated you for Samara because she's more two-dimensional IMO, seriously her whole character revolves around being a knockoff Jedi and she doesn't change that much after what should be a life-changing event (Morinth).
You and your friend are both wrong though, neither of you mentioned Kai Leng who makes Mary Sue herself jealous.
Honestly, why would you hate either of them?

I'd be okay if he sticks around as a dialogue/character writer, since he's pretty good about that. Seriously, no matter how good Karpyshyn was at telling a story, quite a bit of his dialogue was shit.

Ah yes, we both hate Kai with a passion, by character we meant squadmate. I should've clarified.

I don't hate Miranda, but I think Samara is easily the least interesting and most forgettable squadmate in the series.
Yes. Even more than Jacob.

While I agree, I can't help but like her, as one dimensional as she is.
Though, as with most of my reasons for liking certain characters, its mostly due to headcanons.
It's hard to say, really. I liked all the squadmates when I played the game for the first time but after a while and subsequent playthroughs, I realized they don't really have that much character growth. There's no development that alters or changes the decisions they make, apart from if you romance them. Unfortunately, that puts Miranda just a tiny bit higher than Samara, although I guess Samara gets points for being one of the only characters in the game you can't fuck. (DLC squaddies and robots not included.)
That said, whether or not you go through the conversations and side missions associated with them, there's no character development that makes much difference in how the suicide mission actually plays out or the character's decisions during the course of the game. I don't hate them, but I agree with Ekalektik: they're both pretty forgettable.
dialog
You must have missed ME1, then, cause Garrus has some incredibly stiff lines, and really crappy characterization. If it hadn't been for Brandon, Garrus would have sucked. Walters is fit for technical plot writing and little else. He'd make a fine editor. Story lead not so much, as has been shown.

So here's a question. My friends and I have been trying for literally months to get a keybinding workaround to separate out the "everything" key working using this very concise guide, but it isn't working. Three of us made the exact same edit, yet it only works for one of us and when he tries sending us his coalesced file it doesn't work. Is there some variable we're missing here? I feel really dumb needing to ask about this because it seems so simple, but it keeps trying to tell us otherwise.
Yeah he shouldn't be sending his coalesced, bad things will happen. I would use the guide on BSN MEMP forums, that one seems to be missing some steps.
How significant is the difference between male and female Shepard? I've only ever played a male paragon soldier, was thinking about trying a new run.

Romances and rarily some added/changed dialogs. For example talking with Harkin in ME1.
Anyone still have that comic with Jacob in the end where he's searching for content related to him, gets zero and cries? It'd be a good source material for my learning of making gifs.
When I enter Peak 15 in Noveria the textures for my squad, all enemies and some things like boxes disappear. Anyone know how to fix this?
What version are you running?
If you're on steam with an AMD chipset, you're hosed. You'll just have to play that area until it fixes itself.
If you're on the normal game then just dl patch 1.02.
You can actually fix that by using the console to disable lighting. I forget what the command is though.
How many people here made no choice in me3 and instead let Liara's device save the future?
You can actually fix that by using the console to disable lighting. I forget what the command is though.
I don't think that works on AMD FX or later.
anyway, the command is viewmode unlit
So I told Mac Walters over twitter how he is a shitty writer. I got blocked from following him the next day.
Mission accomplished after a year of bitching about him :v:

Well that's just immature; what was the point?
Yeah, he's not a strong writer but get over it.
I don't necessarily think that Walters is a bad writer, but I think he was a bad choice for handling the last part of the trilogy's story.
He wrote two of the most loved characters in the Mass Effect series, so he did something right.
Well, let's take stock.
Did he create them? No. He was assigned to them.
Was his version of them 1. The originator of dating sim: daddy issues for your waifu v.1 and 2. generic turian mcethnic buddy cop whose sole defining trait is being the direct opposite mentality of the rest of his race? Yes.
Were they actually fleshed out into actual characters with flaws and depth and witty gravitas by other writers in 2 and 3? Yes.
As stated Walters is a fine editor if your consider stuff by say Joss Whedon or Peter David to be astonishingly groundbreaking or your favoritest thing ever, as his motifs and theme creation style and skills are very much in the same vein. Doesn't really make him a even a "capable" writer, especially when looking at his output over time, or compared to the other two examples thereof.
It's funny how everyone just sticks nostalgia glasses about their favorite part of space frienduwaifu time on instead of actually going back and looking at the material in light of evaluating a total body of work.
I'd say the most definitive body of evidence is that three of the strongest writers on the team whose work was pretty universally praised regardless of what you felt about whatever game in the trilogy you were playing distanced themselves completely from his output and opinions in public and on record by the end of trilogy's DLC.
He's a fine technical writer and has a firm grasp of pacing control (for a video game) but he is an absolute shit plot and character writer, and this stems all the waaaaaaaaaaaaay back to the neverwinter module that got him hired in the first place.

How can I get over the fact that this man conspired with Casey to write the endings and oh-so-nearly ruined the entire trilogy?
How can I get over the fact that this man conspired with Casey to write the endings and oh-so-nearly ruined the entire trilogy?
*shrugs*
I don't know how it will work for you, but I just accepted that the ending would never be as satisfying as I wanted it to be and moved on from it. I'll admit that this has had the disappointing side effect that I can't really get into the games anymore which is a damned shame as I'd really like to keep loving them, but it's still a piece of entertainment at the end of the day. It ended on a sour note, unfortunate though that is, and that's just how it's going to be.
I am still glad they came up with the Citadel DLC though; goofy as it was, that whole thing just gave me the warm fuzzies and reminded me why I actually liked the series.
Also, on the 'conspired' part...I'm reasonably confident that neither Walters or Hudson intentionally fucked over the game, but rather that they just had no idea what they were doing or how to end it properly.
So I just finished the whole series and now I understand all the bitching about the ending, although I believe the hate is mildly exagerated. Anyway, if the Reapers mission was to kill organics to stop them from creating synthetics which eventually would destroy all life, why didn't they just kill the synthetics the organics created?

That's the least of the logical issues with it but it's been over a year and I don't want to get into things again.

During my playthrough I wanted an explanation of the Reapers motives but after finishing the third game I think I would have preferred they kept them as mysterious alien monstrosities from deep space. And of course a different ending, even though it wasn't as BAD as I was thinking judging from all the hate, though I'll admit it left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
yeah, but you got to play it all at once.
Try having to have waited five years and change while paying full price every time for THAT ending.
Pretty sure you'd be kinda grumpy.
