HYPE!
So from what they've said, subscribers and concierge are getting PTU access later today if the server stress tests go well? There's a lot of misinformation going around and the email didn't have too much info, a lot of the other things people have been saying are based off some developer info on Spectrum but it's hard to keep track of it all.
Stage 1 - PTU 1st Wave: Invites sent Stage 2 - Subscribers: Invites not sent Stage 3 - Concierge: Invites not sent
They had this in the announcement post, yet I've also seen people saying they're adding most of the concierge members to 1st Wave anyway, which would make having a Stage 3 basically pointless. It's so hard to figure out what's going on when nobody can simply quote a source on Reddit. Then there's this: [t]https://i.imgur.com/3F7V31x.png[/t] If they're expanding to Concierge later this week, does that mean Subscribers are in before that? Or was Concierge coming after Subscribers a typo in the announcement thread?
I'm concierge and got access last night, but I actually playtest and report things so it may just mean I'm finally ptu wave 1. beyond that, from my understanding concierge tends to get priority over subscribers in PTU waves now, so realistically if one of those goes up I'd expect the other to happen within a day at most anyways.
Well, there are two slightly different assertions being made about how and when subs and Concierge are going to be added (and then a whole bunch of the usual rumourmongering but never mind that). A very important piece of information to be kept in mind is the second paragraph of the PTU email:
The goal of this initial PTU release is to increase our total player count in an effort to test concurrency. We also need you to focus on testing the traversal system by quantum traveling, landing on moons, locating and visiting Levski, and just exploring the great expanse of space around Crusader.
This clearly states this is a stress test, right up front. Now, let's look at the evidence on the discrepancy. In Spectrum chat (reminder: chat can be faked with Inspect Element, but it doesn't mean it was, grain of salt either way), Will Leverett was screencapped as saying that he'd be only adding a few more people to wave 1 ("real" wave 1) from the chat, i.e. he was asking for volunteers and taking names of people who were online right then and there and eager to help a stress test of the new [del]hot[/del]lagness. Leverett also was capped as saying that they would be adding subs and C about 24 hours from then, being wave 1 rollout. I don't actually have the images at hand but they're on Reddit and their authenticity is potentially suspect. This is a good timely reminder that statements from individual CIG devs in chat or on the forums, unless they are Chris Roberts, are speaking only in their own expertise and understanding and they may not be privy to important art/gameplay/code/production decisions or executive changes or their information is out of date. All of the official statements, including the official Spectrum post linked from the email CIG shot out to everyone and got them hyped into thinking they had been personally invited right away to get into the PTU (and then having that hype train derail when they jump immediately to My Account and PTU is greyed out - some guy filed a Concierge ticket because he could not understand/tolerate "Concierge: not yet invited" after the email getting him rock hard for access), were in the following form, and I quote:
(contextual explanation that Wave 1 testers, Concierge, and subscribers are staged sub-waves within the first rollout wave) and going from one stage to the next will depend on server stability.
Note the lack of definite timeframe. Leverett's job is basically community liaison for the IT teams and collecting and focusing player feedback about server/infrastructure-related problems directly at the IT team instead of bothering Abent with, say, the presence server shitting the bed on AWS APIs. He is in a position to have a reasonably reliable assessment, at least as far as such an assessment can be made by CIG IT, of what their expected timeline is for fireproofing the servers for bigger playercounts as they push the stress tests. On the other hand, the official statements would likely be guided by production's hand, who knows better than to officially commit to hard timelines of adding all these people before they've even gone past ~900 Evocati. Leverett may be the IT liaison and have the guys directly responsible for patching up the servers telling him their most accurate guesses, but production calls the shots. Which one do you think Reddit wants to believe more?
Alright, so within 2 hours of posting I've got PTU access, they must be adding people to either Wave 1 like they don't even care, or they're opening it up to Subs and Concierge really quickly. (I ain't no Concierge either) EDIT: I never got an email saying I had been invited to PTU either, so always best to check the website. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/account/copy/ptu EDIT: 36.05GB download.
Still no PTU for me. Damn.

Believe me, you guys aren't missing much. The base game is there and you can tell the game's mechanics are going to be enjoyable, but the netcode is so godawful (think Alpha 2.0 PTU levels of desync and framerate lag), physics stuttering, broken basic mechanics like not being able to pick up or place the objects that make up almost every mission objective, the fact that when you're dogfighting your FPS is under 10 (I'm using a GTX 1080 TI, an i7 4820k quad core @3.9Ghz, and 16GB of DDR3 RAM) and not only is your FPS low, enemy ships only update their positions once every five seconds or so, teleporting hundreds of meters in every one of those ticks. I think that you might actually be better off waiting for the live release when it's actually playable than frustrating yourself with the current build and being spoiled for the real deal.
still a good opportunity to learn the new interaction systems and explore the new ships while they're all available to spawn, but yeah the blippy desync is rough at the moment.

Also, PSA about 3.0, the patch notes are really important to read. The known issues are very good to know about, and they also include things like this:
Key Game-play How Tos: Afterburner: There is now a single afterburner with the ability to achieve higher top velocity under certain conditions, giving us AB SCM and AB Cruise with the only distinction being two different speeds. You can only enter AB Cruise if your flight path is a straight, forward line. Otherwise you’re limited to AB SCM, i.e. while maneuvering/strafing. Once in AB Cruise you can release the afterburner key and go into an AB idle mode to maintain your current speed. Throttle setting and y-axis strafe level allows incremental speeds, but you will decelerate if you change your vector. If you continue to hold AB and maneuver, you drop to AB SCM speed until you return to straight-line flight. AB Idle holds your current velocity as long as you’re not maneuvering and decoupled rotation is allowed while in AB idle. Ship Start Up: Approach the entry point of your ship, then press and hold “F” to activate the interaction system. Select from the various inner thought prompts using the cursor or mouse wheel to move between them. Once inside your ship, again press and hold “F” and select the “Flight Ready” prompt to run through complete ship start up. Alternatively, you can press the “F5” key for quick start up. Landing: Landing now takes place through an Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. When close to a landing location, request a landing by navigating to your “Comms” menu on the MobiGlas (note: this is incorrectly displayed as a ship icon) and pushing the hail button (wifi symbol). Wait a moment, and ATC should assign you a landing location. Note, you may need to request take off to leave Levski (trigger opening of bay doors). Quantum Travel: To quantum travel to a destination, open your MobiGlas (F1) and select the StarMap App (diamond shaped symbol). From there, use the mouse to select a destination. Whether or not an object can be selected for QT is determined by gravitational values (The larger the object the further away you can detect it, large objects with small objects in orbit drown out their detection capabilities at long ranges). Meaning you will not be able to travel from point A to B at all times, but instead may need to move into orbit of a larger body to detect destinations also in orbit. For example, to get to a station orbiting a moon that orbits a planet, the route is Planet>Moon>Station. Once you have a destination selected you can “set destination” on your MobiGlas to bring up a quantum travel target. As before, align with the QT target and press “B” to travel.
If everyone remembers, CIG were putting into 3.0 exactly one of a particular kind of derelict wrecked ship somewhere on one of the moons. (The ship is a[sp]Javelin[/sp]btw) Here is a spoiler image of exactly what it looks like from a few hundred meters up. And for people with 3.0 access, here is a spoiler set of instructions on how to find it according to some rando avocado(?) on Reddit. It apparently does not have a fully-fleshed-out traversible interior, just a ruined bridge.
Nope, sadly. One of my fondest memories from this game is the first things that happened to me. Walked out of the room at Olisar, walked to the bathroom door, clipped through it and fell into the world.

The goal is to make additional ships available that expand the depth and variety of the game world and give players a different experience rather than any particular advantage.
There is also a game that tests you on identifying ship silhouettes and they will draw random entrants after it's over and award them a Hawk, contest runs between now and noon Pacific on December 1st. Smart's grudge against Roberts began, in the poor bastard's own words, when Smart's third publisher for BC3K dropped him on the spot at a trade show after seeing Wing Commander being demoed there. By the time Smart's fourth publisher, Take Two, forced his broken game to release because they were sick and tired of even dealing with him, Wing Commander 3 was out and Origin/Roberts were raking in the money and fame. He would send angry letters to Origin accusing them of stealing his ideas, and their response to him was that they'd never heard of him (oh...) and good luck with that. He's had an obsessive grudge ever since that went into dormancy for a while when Roberts left gaming to direct some good and some terrible movies. Roberts returning to the industry with Star Citizen has reignited all of that butthurt. Even the WoW-clone MMO he hijacked is completely barren since the start of maintenance despite previously having about as much traffic as his own games combined. If Star Citizen was totally unavailable for almost two weeks he'd be unbearably loud.
Actually really loving the look of the Hawk, especially its bird-like appearance when landed. For once I feel like they've come up with a truly clever ship design, at least aesthetically.
the hawk has no god damn business being that good looking, probably the best small ship design so far
Both the Avenger EMP variant and the Hawk seem built around the same strategy: Use EMP to knock an enemy ship out for long enough that you can utilize your nose ballistic autocannon to casually snip off their engines or break the power plant, leaving the ship dead in space. Then you employ a boarding action. All it really needs to complete it is a weak tractor beam device to bring the target ship to a complete halt and stop it tumbling end over end with no power or stabilizers.

So I got in-game once after a total of about 4 hours trying. Continuing to get a black load screen for several minutes up to over an hour. My short time in game was spent sub 4 FPS just due to my 300+ ping. Will keep testing.
I've been able to get in a few times at around 20fps. Landed at yela, daymar and leviski. Landing on a planet is a lovely view, but I sometimes end up going to fast and crash into the planet. Inner thought system is nice, a bit clunky, but way better than the use system. And when the mobiglass works, it works really well.
